Widely rated one of the best Great House releases, though tasters split on where it sits versus the 2020. The nose is classic Hampden funk: solvent, glue, pineapple and overripe tropical fruit, with a marzipan edge several people flag. Palate leans fruity with fresh pineapple juice, pepper and a dry, woody finish. Medium ester by Hampden standards, and the alcohol is well tucked in.

80% OWH 2012 20% <>H 2016 In direct comparison with '20, '21 and '22: least intense on the nose, more marzipan, brightest together with 21, a bit more tart and powerful than the others on the palate. Quite smooth and restrained on the nose, seems fresh and vinegar at the same time. Clearly solvent and some ester, citrus, perhaps lemon or yet tangerine? A slightly sweet marzipan note mixes in. Sourly fruity with pineapple. A bit woody with vanilla. On the palate it comes across sour-salty-bitter at first, yet seems a bit creamy. Hampden esters towards glue are also found now. Citrus in the direction of grapefruit and again marzipan. At the back, some anise is added. In the finish to the anise, orange peel and green tea. A very pleasant blend.

I think the bottling lives a little from the price and the limited availability these days. The GH 20 simply tasted better to me neat. But it's brutally cool to have gotten a sample through Rod. 85/100

The original Hampden Great House that gave this range its letters of nobility. The nose opens with a profusion of esters and powerful notes of glue, solvents and varnish, as well as a heavy dose of tropical fruit and overripe citrus. This is followed by a pastry touch of marzipan, candied fruit, vanilla and a hint of wood from the barrel. A very pleasant, easy-drinking blend. The attack on the palate takes the funk up a notch, with medicinal notes and flavors of cherry and advanced fermentation. It's fat and opulent on the palate. Despite its power, the juice retains its roundness and mellowness on the palate, making it very drinkable and accessible. The alcohol is also very well integrated. The finish is very long, with lots of citrus, tropical fruit and strong astringency. Wood and spice come to the fore, invigorating what was intended to be a fuller finish. A very "funky" Hampden that is beginning to be the subject of considerable speculation.

2nd Tasting: Still excellent as a few years ago. Not as wild as the green. Rather more mature and balanced. 3rd Tasting: I like it much better today because of this. Round but still powerful. The prices are crazy, of course. The whole nonsense started with this one.

Special features from my comparison tasting with HD GH '19, '20 and '21: Nose: sweet, berry, ripe cherries Palate: spicy, woody Finish: wood, grilled pineapple, medium length First tasting: Nose: very fruity with a Jamaican funk! But there's more to discover here: I find lime and green apple. Mouth: now very much what the nose had hinted at! Finish: acidity and a slight bitterness are added together with influences from the cask. I particularly like the Hampden because, compared to some high ester bottlings, it is nicely drawn out but still conveys the Hampden DNA very well.

On aeration, allspice is out, crème brûlée, burnt sugar, hints of yeast, flowery molasses, vegetal with olive and cucumber, hints of red fruits, metallic patina. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is funky, intense with esters, solvents, fruity with delicious overripe, fermented banana, pineapple, citrus fruits like grapefruit, lime, orange, fruits like cherry, strawberry, some candied, hints of yoghurt, buttery, delicious, molasses is grassy, briny with olive and wood roasted with roasted nuts, marzipan, pastry, caramelized, smoky, spicy with vanilla, allspice. 8,8:The finish is long, balanced, dry and tannic, slightly metallic, fermented with dairy notes, buttery, medicinal with esters, chemical with phenol, fruity with overripe tropical, citrus fruits, wood is roasted with crème brûlée, brioche, biscuits, fruitcake, dark chocolate, smoky, spicy with anise, vanilla, peppery, meaty and molasses flowery, vegetal, dark with black tea. Comparison between 19, 20 and 21: Very round Hampden. Nicely fruity, but rather low to medium esters. Less bacon and not buttery compared to the 20. Spicy on the finish.

... Hampden, legendary Jamaican distillery, which besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery, you can sense wild esters, after which your whole body soaks in the scent of yellow tropical fruits – mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of those rums you "must try before you die."

First of all: Many thanks to Rodolphe for making this split possible. As the first of the Great House series, this rum is unfortunately a victim of its success and hardly affordable. PLV is certainly not right here 😂 Compared to the other three in the series, the stone fruit/marzipan notes are the strongest here. Otherwise, this is also a super accessible yet mega tasty blend of high- and low-ester Hampdens. For anyone who hasn't had a chance to try it: it doesn't taste exactly like the other three, of course, but it's roughly the same in terms of quality and comes closest to the 2020 in terms of taste, while remaining a little fresher. My mental association was that someone had tipped a small sip of Monymusk into the 2020 GH 😂

Compared to the other Great Houses, this one doesn't particularly stand out, except for the price. In conclusion, I would say that I would have liked to have taken this rum back then and not just a bottle. In the meantime, the price is simply too exaggerated. So just switch to the GH20, which is a lot cheaper and just as good.

Predominantly spicy aromas and wood on the nose. Some licorice and glue, tropical fruit and marzipan. In the mouth initially floral, flowery aromas, some pineapple and plenty of pepper. Slightly bitter. Not quite as woody at the end.

For me, this is still a classic all-rounder and definitely better, more intense and more harmonious than the second batch. The balance between fruitiness and spiciness is very harmonious for me, a clear shortcoming of the second batch, which comes with much less ester. A great PLV, especially at the issue price at the time

Tasted blind again today. The order remains the same and only 2022 and 2023 were swapped. Overall, for me, the vintages 2019/2020/2021 deserve the name Great House because they simply taste really round. Also easy to distinguish by color. The vintages 2022 and 2023 are clearly lighter with less depth but in my opinion more buttery. Hampden Great House Crosstasting 2019-2023. 3rd place in the tasting here, I find the ester clearly dominant which is definitely not bad. However, for me, both Great House bottlings are about a round spirit. My ranking: 1st place 2020 2nd place 2021 3rd place 2019 4th place 2022 5th place 2023

I finally got my hands on a discarded sample of Great House 19. In the taste, perfectly integrated alcohol, after a sip, a wide range of flavors develops beautifully, which lasts a long time and encourages you to take another sip. Too bad about the price tag, it spoils the pleasure.

The nose has light sticky notes combined with typical estery notes of overripe fruit, but is too lax for me. Rather sweet fruit like mango on the palate, bitter orange peel on the finish. Mixed.

Cologne-Bonn Rum Tasting: Thanks to Leo for this sample, which would otherwise have been very expensive. Since the rum has had plenty of time to breathe, it is super harmonious. Clearly beats the GH2025 that was just opened.

A Hampden tasting, with Great House 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, plus the. New Beginnings and both versions of the Pago. Of the Great House, I like the 2022 and 2021 best, even if I don't find the overall differences very big.

Very fruity on the nose. Somewhat more reserved on the palate, but the finish is long and complex. Less funk than the Hampden overproof.

For me simply a badass blend that promises Hampden and delivers Hampden. Less esters than some other releases, but it brings the typical character in mouth and nose. Yet it remains almost discreet and pleasant and requires less attention than other flagship Hampdens that need taming on the palate. Compared to the 2020 Edition, it's definitely wilder with more edges and corners.

On the nose, equals the best Hampden I've had so far, drink side it falls a bit short of the expectations, yet it is really interesting. The nose is driven by funk and tropical fruit, with some of the vinagre-like notes that I look for in an Hampden, while the palate is much closer to many Hampden we already knows with no vinagre and fresh ananas juice in Place.

Very nice Jamaica, fruitier than Great House 2020, which for me still remains a bit ahead in the battle of the best GH. Classic Hampden in taste and aroma, a pity about the current price which reflects more of a collector's value.

The color- like honey - dark yellow or gold. The nose - from solvents and esters to ripe tropical fruits (pineapple or banana) The taste -there us everything you want- funky esters, wooden tones, fruity tones, esters, the taste is round with quite medium long finish…warm..which I really like.
