Edit: Nachdem ich mittlerweile auch Armagnac für mich neu entdecken konnte, hab ich ihm nochmal eine Chance gegeben. Mittlerweile finde ich ihn eigentlich ganz gut. Ein nettes Geschmacksprofil, zwar leider immer noch nicht ganz überzeugend für eine sehr gute Bewertung, aber immerhin nah dran. Leider so gar nicht mein Geschmack, da Armagnac und ich keine gute Vorgeschichte haben. Deshalb gebe ich hier keine Bewertung ab.

Armagnac finish in perfection. very very tasty complex and spannend👌🏼🔥 in the series of rums from the Japanese Nine Leaves distillery probably the best to date in my opinion. Very tasty stuff, even if it is beastly!

Benefits from the Armagnac finish and rises thanks to the resulting aromatics to one of the best Nine Leaves for me so far. The rum is pleasantly easy to drink and brings a new component to the familiar Nine Leaves aroma world without denying its origin. Very successful!

The typical sake aroma of some other Nine Leaves is somewhat less pronounced here due to the finish. The higher vol. % content compared to other Nine Leaves is particularly positive here as it gives the rum stronger aromas and more complexity.

A fruity, sad, woody and slightly metallic note comes towards you. On the palate then pepper spreads, something both nutty and salty with wood. That stays in the relatively short finish, complemented by some wood. Alcohol is well integrated, it comes across surprisingly light. A good rum. But you have to like it, for me too much sake.

#5024 03.01.2025 Sampling a bit at home after a few days of work. Nose Intense, light wood, citrus, light earthy, plum, spice, light tannins, dried fruit. Palate Intense, wood, light tannins, faint roasted, spice, tobacco, citrus, light plums, light salty, light raisin. Finish Medium to long, round, wood, light tannins, spice, light tobacco, dried fruit, citrus. The rum need to rest for a good while to really open up and settle. The empty glass has light coffee and floral notes.

8,8:On the nose, armagnac with grapes, dried and citrus fruits, spicy and slightly roasted wood notes with hazelnuts, chocolate and caramel, sugar cane, sweet with honey, flowery, bump into our nosetrils, very round. On aeration, cappuccino is out, the molasses shows up, thicker and thicker, musty, herbaceous and fresh with green tea, some tannins. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is a combination of Armagnac notes like grapes, perhaps raisins, dry, roasted wood notes like chocolate, leather, nuts, caramelized, toffee, spicy with pepper and sugar cane, sweet, flowery and grassy, fresh. When aired a bit, the molasses shows up, briny, thick, candied, mineral, dark with licorice, black tea, soy sauce, some confectionery is there, mocha, tannins, green, citrus fruits and prunes. 8,8:The finish is long, round, dry and tannic, very complex, with notes from palate lingering on.Well, Violet, creme brulee, clove and walnuts jump out of nowhere suddenly, if we are patient. RumX Advent calendar, 10.12., blind. First impression right impression! It's unmistakable! Nose: lots of aromas, roasty-smoky, spicy nutmeg powder, clearly red wine/Armagnac, resinous-fresh, nutty in the direction of hazelnut. But also fruity and almost floral. Old grape and a hint of raspberry. Definitely dried, sulphurized apricot. Palate: Wow, intense and concentrated, tannins, not dull, but rather fresh. Something citrusy, tipping towards violet. And it's also roasted and spicy, cardamom, nutmeg and pepper. Spicy and salty at first, then becoming sweeter. There is also some menthol and iodine. Spicy sweet finish, aniseed, tea. Even though I usually don't like after-ripening, this one improves the Nine Leaves immensely. But it remains special.

RumX-Adventskalender 10.12.2021, blind. Nur ein paar kurze Notizen: In der springt einem ein eindeutiger Charakter in die Nase. Hinter einem sehr präsenten Finish, das seinen Ursprung wohl in einem Traubenbrand hat, zeigt sich eine charakteristische Note, die man nur schwer beschreiben kann. Mit Anklängen von Tequilla und Grappa ist sie für Rum eher ungewöhnlich, deutet aber damit recht einseitig nach Japan zur Nine Leaves Destillerie. Bisher haben mich die Rums von dort noch nicht wirklich abgeholt, aber eine stetige Verbesserung ist auch für mich wahrnehmbar. Spannend, wie weit die Reise geht. Ursprüngliche Verkostungsnotiz: Lecker, deutlich reifer, besser als der Angels Half

Small Nine Leaves cross tasting - 2025-03-11: Since I currently have the Nine Leaves Cards series on the table, it makes sense to include the RumClub in the comparison. The kinship is clearly recognizable. A bit roastier than the other bottlings in today's comparison, but the alcohol is more dominant here, despite basically the same ABV.

RumX Advent calendar 10.12.21: A good cheese I like is an Italian cheese with whisky and malted barley. Somehow this flavor really hits me. Added to that are red wine and wood notes. Unfortunately, I can't do much with it here. I don't like the rum very much. Although very complex and rich in taste, it's not for me. Still cool to have tried something like this.

A very beautiful selection from the Germans of Spirit of Rum. The nose is very exotic, if not Asian: the influence of Japanese whisky peat is not far, with earthy and musk notes, but also quite marked spices (cinnamon, ginger, clove, vanilla, rather mild chili). Moreover, the armagnac cask has done its work with a woody and fruity side, focused on dried and shelled fruits (hazelnut, walnut), grape and date. The aromatic profile is rather balanced and attractive. The rum heats up very quickly on the palate. The spices (clove, cinnamon, chili, pepper, salt), woody, smoky and earthy notes offer a rustic, tannic and astringent profile. The notes of armagnac, grape, walnut and caramel balance the debate. Although the alcohol is very noticeable and a bit disturbing, the profile remains original and pleasant on the taste level. The finish is medium length, with the same characteristics: herbal, earthy and salty notes, this caramel-hazelnut side that gives a bit of sweetness, dried fruits, spices and a more pronounced woodiness towards leather and chocolate. An atypical and versatile profile that makes you want to discover more about Japanese rum.

Nah, doesn't really suit my taste. You can clearly recognize Japan, really intense sake flavor. Otherwise, it's still quite spicy, as well as nicely woody and toasty. The 5cl sample will be a challenge :)

My first rum from the Nine Leaves Distillery. On the nose mostly fruity notes (grapes), Armagnac, but also somewhat musty and medicinal. Over time, Maggi and smoke notes appear. Still quite like it. Also on the palate again grapes, slightly sharp medicinal, leather, pepper, caramel and wood.

Armagnac finish is quite noticeable both on nose and on tongue. However it did remind me a bit of a whisky with a heavy wine barrel influence. Quite spicy at first. Not my favorite but an interesting one. Thank you MrRumantic for the sample.

A beautiful nose with walnut, wood and currants. Quite a bit of alcohol on the palate but the aromas are there, tropical fruits, angelica and roast. A long finish where I perceive sake, still walnut and wood. When the glass is empty the sake is more pronounced. A very beautiful rum, even if I'm not crazy about its aromatic profile. Day 10 RumX Advent calendar: Nose: Woody, nutty, grassy, grape. I have to think of an aged Agricole. The palate says lots of punch: woody, roasted, spicy, earthy and still a bit fresh towards grass. I like it, even if I was pretty off again...

RumXmas #10 Blind: I’m going with agricole. Detect some apple, mokka and other fruity notes, a bit of a dry finish but nicely balanced. But the first whiff reminded me of whisky with some earthy hints and the first taste had a grappa effect on me. It’s always weird when when I try to explain this, but that’s what it triggers in my brain. So far it’s always been an agricole in that case. First time trying a Japanese rum. Not really agricole but kokuto (okinawa black sugar) based. That’s something new. Quite good, I’ve enjoyed it.

I didn’t appreciate it much, honestly I found it really rough and too strong. Lots of wood, pepper, almost metallic; I found the alcohol well integrated but in the end it remains a product I didn’t like.

Nice dark amber color, turning bright yellow on the edges. Nose: sharp notes of grapes, together with a strong alcohol kick. Then it gradually mellows towards mokka and grassy notes. As the oxygen does its thing, my memory goes to typical south Italian Christmas sweets, made with grapes, cinnamon, cloves and roasted almonds..wonderful! Mouth: Uh, punchy and spicy, mild astringency..the herbal/grass notes is more present here..then the mokka comes through, followed by a light note of dark chocolate to sweeten the whole experience. Fruit-wise, I still get grapes, mixed with a sweeter fruits

Tried as a 5cl sample. Smells very interesting with grapes, dry red wine, hazelnuts, wood, caramel and a bit musty. Taste-wise very unusual compared to all rums I’ve had so far. Dried fruits, especially raisins, smoked wood, a bit of peppery sharpness and a slightly salty note are noticeable. In the finish the hazelnut from the nose reappears. Alcohol is well integrated and overall very interesting and tasty.

The 10th sample of the RX calendar with the Nive Leaves pleases me very much. While the nose is dominated by rather spicy, woody notes, fruit and plant notes come through on the palate. Very varied. 👍

One of the special bottlings I had in my cabinet for years. Always good when something had to be completely different. I didn't really find this bottling delicious. Rather fascinating with many facets. Not a daily drink but challenging and clearly for connoisseurs.

My first Nine Leaves and immediately a positive surprise. Basically from nose to finish very woody/spicy, almost peppery, but constantly with a note of Armagnac/grape. Sweetness very discreet and alcohol well integrated.

I have tasted this bottling several times now and I am always impressed by the aromas that come together here. For me clearly the best Nine Leaves so far. Only the alcohol bites a bit but it's okay. The Armagnac finish seems to provide the necessary finesse that the other bottlings lacked.

At first I thought I had a single malt in the glass. Then from the woody spice emerges a pleasantly sweet rum flavor, which is exciting to roll on the tongue. Very interesting and exciting, like an aroma chameleon.

Different from the crowd with aftertaste notes of sake, not as strong as other bottlings from the same distillery but very distinctive, overall quite different from the usual, intriguing and warm. On the nose the note of sake is felt and dominates even after a long time, while on the palate it is perceived from the beginning but then fades leaving space for other aromas. By far the sake note is the predominant one. In the glass, tested with two different ones, it is quite viscous and of a beautiful color. (PS: the rating, like the impressions, are purely personal)

Sehr interessanter Rum, auf den ersten Zug in der Nase fast in Richtung Highland Whisky, Armagnac kommt dann direkt hinterher. Das junge Alter merkt man in der Schärfe durchaus noch, aber er kommt auch geschmacklich kräftig daher. Das Fass kommt gerade im Abgang stark mit, hat sich also schon in der kurzen Zeit sehr bemerkbar gemacht. Erinnert aufgrund des Fasseinflusses und der alkoholischen Stärke entfernt an eine junge Version des Saint James Brut de Fût 2003.

On the nose you immediately notice the Armagnac. Grape, dark, damp moss, old wine barrels. With a floral note and something smoky. For a moment I even thought of light cake... On the palate further floral, the different wood aromas, but not heavy, rather light, towards vanilla. Also an aroma that goes towards smoked ham, intense, but I can't quite place it. The longer it stays in the glass, the more intense the hearty component becomes. The finish is vanilla and smoked meat. I found it very nice to drink, it feels light in the mouth, but is still nicely diverse and the Armagnac makes it something special.

In my opinion, the Armagnac finish (or its duration) doesn't ideally fit the NL distillate here. On the nose I still have the metallic-, tequila-, citrus-like NL notes mixed with woody-earthy marc. On the palate, I miss the symbiosis of distillate and cask. Nine Leaves always shines through with changing associations of sometimes Armagnac, sometimes Highland whisky o_O. But for my taste they don't form a unity. Of course, it's not!! like that, but I associate more a short wet-cask-wash than two years of cask aging. There are in my opinion better NL and Rum Club bottlings.

At the end of the day this is an audacious bottling. The Armagnac is very prevalent in all senses. It is an eccentrics job which makes this not horrible. But this is not the success level of renaissance of Taiwan level of integrating difficult casks with rum
