Anam na h-Alba DDL Guyana Single Cask Rum
Opinions land all over the place on this one. Fans find a full, dark Guyana profile — raisins, dried plum, chocolate, coffee and burnt sugar over dusty old oak. Others get stuck on the bitterness and hot, not-quite-tamed alcohol from that 66.6% cask strength. One taster called it "ultra strange," in a good way. A heavy, oily, roasty Demerara that needs air and patience.

Devilish with the 66.6% 😈. They cut sharply at the start. Once the nose gets used to it, you are rewarded with full, dark-spicy-fruity aromas. Raisins with dried plum and sweet-sour dried black currant. Also old, dusty oak floorboards and old cardboard. Then again dried blood orange slices. I like that. On the palate it also shows nicely full-bodied and strong. A heavy sweetness of dried plums and toffee forms the base. Slightly bitter wood acidity, molasses and a dark, malty-roasty tone take over, followed by licorice and sweet wood. Also leather and tobacco with vanilla are present, just like chocolate and again the dried blood orange. Why isn't it rated better? For me a very rounded representative of its kind.

Lots of roasted aromas, spice and burnt wood on the nose. Raisins and cooked plums are added. Intense, quite bitter and full-bodied on the palate. Great combination of heavy molasses sweetness, Maggi associations and bitterness. Blurred orange comes to mind. Very atypical and special Guyana rum!

The nose I found very promising and pleasant. The chocolate aromas with a slight spice and orange harmonize perfectly! On the palate initially a sweetness of burnt caramel, spice, which is then abruptly replaced by poorly integrated alcohol, bitterness, and old cask. Unfortunately, this continues in the finish as well.

Not so bad either but there are much, much better Guyanas. Somehow it lacks the full blast of roastiness, which is rather lightly pronounced here. Some nuts, orange, and sweetness also come through.

The alcohol first bites a bit on the nose... needs a little time. Orange and chocolate, candied fruits, honey, and coffee. On the palate: nice oily mouthfeel... alcohol also very present here... some orange also here, chocolate, wood, burnt sugar, dark syrup. Many bitter notes.

Interesting Guyana rum, partly reminiscent of Nicaragua or the special roast aromas of Dictador due to its nutty aromas. But here it already tends towards wood ash. The high alcohol content is noticeable, but the palate is quite complex from dried fruits to licorice to smoke.

Actually, this is a typical dark Guyana rum with all the characteristic markers that I like so much. However, this bottling is sometimes a bit rough and also has a latent tendency to bitterness, which goes along with the charred wood. For a very good rating, I think it still lacks a bit.

I think I and this bottling won't become real friends. Something is missing here for me. The rum is a bit too bitter and alcoholic for me. Well, nice to have tried it, but unfortunately nothing more.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Ultra strange Guyana rum. On one hand dirty with spices and burnt wood and molasses, on the other hand this bitter sweetness of burnt sugar and a kind of tree resin and roasted thyme/sesame note, rounded off by dark chocolate and smoke. For the alcohol content, it drinks really quite well! Exciting and wild!
