Australia doesn't come up much in a tasting flight, and that's part of the fun here. It's heavily cask-driven — charred wood, walnut, caramel and a wave of red dried fruit (apricot, raisin, peach) that leans toward sweet wine. At 60.4% the heat stays surprisingly buried; one taster called the alcohol "très bien intégré". Creamy, syrupy body, then a long dry tannic finish.

Today 5 Australians in the glass. 1. Rum Club 14 yr: light fruity, very present on the palate with medium-long finish. 84 points. 2. Rom Deluxe no. 40 15yr: Quite different from the first Rum Club. Much drier. Also very fruity, but the fruits here are more dark berry-like. The finish is unfortunately a bit metallic. 85 points. 3. Rum Club no. 40 16 yr: Similar to the first Rum Club, just with more wood and much drier. Although not as dry as the Rom Deluxe. I find the alcohol not well integrated here. 80 points. 4. RA 2007 15 yr: Similar in profile to the first Rum Club due to its dominant light fruits. However, much more intense and complex. An absolute fireworks show on the palate! Apricot, mirabelle, and peach in such an intense form is impressive. If the finish were a bit longer, this would be a great rum. But still very good! 88 points. 5. Ferroni 2013: Absolutely not comparable to the others. Totally cask-driven. Very intense on the palate with dark fruits, wet wood, and leather. If you like rums with very strong cask influence, you've found a perfect companion for an evening by the fire. I like it too. 79 points. The distinct dryness of the Rom Deluxe I find great. A piece of desert in the mouth =D It also stands out a bit from the others due to its dark fruits. The two RC and the RA are most comparable, with the RA by far my favorite.

8,6:On the nose, very enticing first impression with red, dried fruits like apricots, raisins and peaches, roasted wood with nuts, caramel and confectionery, a bit spicy, as a molasses is vegetal with a sap. On aeration, waxy notes arise, some vanilla, citrus, the molasses is darker with a black tea, the wood is charred... 8,7:On the palate, the attack is delicious, syrupy with red, dried fruits and charred, smoky wood notes like cream toffee, butterscotch, nuts like a walnut, spices like vanilla, pepper, ginger a bit later, a bit salty, very creamy and round. After resting the rum, banana is out, dark molasses with a licorice, wood gives us velvety port notes, peaches, coffee. 8,6:The finish is long, dry and a bit tannic, the wood still charred, spicy, the fruits stay dried and red..

We have a very nice Australian here in the glass. On the nose it is very woody, caramel and nuts can also be detected. On the palate then again a lot of wood, but also some vanilla, spices and licorice.

On the nose lots of wood and sweet red dried fruits, the high alcohol barely shows. On the palate then lots of cask spice and again that fruitiness that leans towards sweet wine. Positively surprised, as Australia hadn't appealed to me so far.
