Most people land somewhere around "nice starter agricole," and a few just don't click with it. This is a woody, spicy Martinique pur jus with young oak, vanilla, nutmeg, a smoky edge and some dried fruit. Several find it dry, austere and even a touch bitter; a couple say the wood and smoke read almost like whisky or cognac. Fresh sugarcane and lime keep it lively.

Very successful agricole nose, sweetish, nutmeg, vanilla. I didn't expect to like such a young agricole so much. Very pleasant sweetness makes this rum very accessible. Everything balanced according to my expectations.

I am not a fan. It is however, better expression from Saint James that I had a chance to taste. So far I only had a basic range so this one is a step up but still it is very rough and coarse in taste. Typical agricole however this one is outside of my tasting palate.

Saint James VSOP is an AOC rum from pure cane juice made in a traditional Creole column. that’s aged between 4 and 6 years. The nose is woody, spicy, sweet and fruity with aromas of oak, vanilla and dandelion. At the palate it’s woody and spicy with flavors of pepper, leather and honey. The finish is medium long, fruity and woody with flavors of oak and dried fruit.

#5962 15.11.2025 Enjoing a few samples after coming back home from a nice dinner with my wife and son. Nose Light, round, wood, light roasted, sugarcane, light grass, light floral, spice, peach. Palate Light, wood, light roasted, faint floral, light cinnamon, light caramel, faint honey, grass, light leather, peach. Finish Medium long, wood, light floral, cinnamon, light caramel, grass, dried fruit. Empty glass Canilla, caramel, cinnamon, light peach, light honey.

Here is a 43% VSOP from Saint James. The nose is predominantly woody, young wood, oak and cask. The palate is also predominantly woody, with a slightly smoky note and vanilla is also recognizable. Quite okay.

Discovered at the Limoges Spirits Festival 2025. 👃 The typical Saint James woodiness. Young wood above all with rather candied sugarcane. Dominance of wood smoke, spices (vanilla, nutmeg, pepper), light dark chocolate with a bit of crème brûlée. Slight varnish too. Some fruits, dried and tropical, but really in the background. 😋 Very woody, lots of flavors coming from the barrel and local tropical aging. Spices, vanilla, nutmeg (one of SJ's typical flavors), pepper, wood smoke, chocolate, licorice, Cognac-like aspect on dried fruits with alcohol, a bit of burnt caramel. A rather austere profile but with its own identity. ⛳ Very characteristic of SJ with this bitter and astringent woodiness above all. Vanilla, chocolate and black pepper, dry tobacco, some dried fruits and the candied sugarcane that ties it all together. 💡 This Saint James is one of the VSOPs I recommend to start with pure Martinique rums. My personal top J.M > Depaz > Saint James

A good VSOP, a rough smoky rum with smooth agricole notes. Again, similar to Guyana rum. In the mouth violently dry, woody, spicy and bitter. Round is different! In the finish mainly bitter chocolate with caramel. If you like young Agricoles, you get a lot for the price.

For a VSOP rum, this Saint James is an outstanding success. On the nose, we find the typical Saint James spirit, with its intense, elegant woodiness, dried fruit, lime, dark chocolate and smoky notes seasoned by spices (nutmeg, vanilla). Roundness and softness are the hallmarks of this olfactory profile. On the palate, the woodiness is felt alongside the spices, which are more present, notably pepper. Dried fruit and cocoa add an appreciable gourmet touch. An earthy edge emerges in the background. This is a lovely, easy-drinking rum with a touch of complexity. The finish, of decent length, gives way to sugarcane and a slight bitterness. Tobacco and toasty notes join oak and spice to complete the profile. A great reference for discovering agricultural rums, at a really low price.

In the nose still nice lime and fresh sugar cane, taste then more woody and spicy and clear cognac association. Finish then similar, somewhat rough and a little bitter. I have better memories of the Depaz VSOP in comparison. Could be fruitier.

Smoky dark chocolate on the nose and a strong taste of cognac mixed with cocoa on the palate. The finish maintains the dark chocolate notes but adds tobacco and a little pineapple at the very end. A decent sipping rum.

24 Days of Rum 2024 - Black Edition - Day 20 Erster Eindruck: gereifter Agricole, leicht muffig Nase: Heu, Gras, Tabak, blumig und leichte Anklänge von Früchten, aber auch etwas muffig Gaumen: irgendwie elegant, aber alte Agricoles sind einfach nicht mein Fall, hab hier leider keine besonders positiven Assoziationen Abgang: mittellang, Holz, Bleistiftspäne, später pelzig Gesamteindruck: ich werde auch durch diesen Saint James kein Agricole-Fan

Très surpris de la complexité de ce rhum au vu du prix. Le bois est bien présent amenant avec lui des épices ( Vanille / Muscade / Girofle / Réglisse ), quelques notes toasté ( Chocolat / Cappuccino ) le tout sans camoufler la canne qui apporte une fraîcheur appréciable ( Végétal / Agrumes ). C'est plutôt bien tropical ( Coco / Banane ) mais sans être trop mûr avec une touche sucré ( Brun / Crème brûlée ).

The nose starts with a typical and spicy woodiness, very representative of the Martinique style. The pure cane juice rum finds all its bearings here, it fits into this oak setting with remarkable ease, without just blending into the background. Aeration opens up the aromatic profile a bit, and we discover a somewhat brighter woodiness. The fruits now escape from the clearing, they are very ripe, even dried, and have rolled in a good handful of sweet and elegant spices. The palate is fluid but flavorful, with an imposing but already well-melted woodiness. Pepper crushes its grains and spreads its flavors on the tongue without ever burning it. We then enjoy a cane coated with leather with a thousand peppery sparkles, candied with honey and sweet spices. The finish gives way to some dried fruits, but it is the melted oak that takes center stage.
