Savanna The Wild Island Edition - Mer 2003
Pour this one neat and give it a few minutes to open. It's a 15-year Savanna column-still rum, and the Armagnac influence is the whole story — raisin, dried fruit, grape spirit, cooked caramel and a smoky-oak edge. Several tasters call it dry, spicy and a little bitter, with roasted-oak notes that sometimes crowd out the fruit. Distinctive rather than easy.

How does Savanna The Wild Island Edition - Mer 2003 taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Dry, oaky Savanna with strong Armagnac grape Most see a well-integrated Armagnac finish over Savanna fruit power — raisin, smoke, spice. The catch: it runs dry, woody and a touch bitter, and one taster flagged rough alcohol.

Most helpful positive review
Interesting combination of the heavy Armagnac cask influences and the fresh Grand Arôme notes. On the palate, the result is a rather unusual aroma picture that knows how to surprise positively. Unusual and certainly not a crowd pleaser, but one or two people might like it.

Clearly fruity with pineapple, banana and some mango on the nose, accompanied by vanilla and a light spiciness. Strong on the palate, but not entirely harmonious, the fruit remains present, but is partially overshadowed by dried fruit and roasted notes. The finish is long, but somewhat angular.

fort dauphin #989: This bottling is something for collectors. The search for aromas is extremely difficult when tasting it. Candied fruit, some fruit yoghurt, very light on the palate with a short finish. The alcohol is not well integrated despite the low abv. wild island #985: good fruity attack with some wood and candied bright fruit. fermented fruit on the finish, as well as pastry and fruit yogurt. great mouthfeel and a nice medium length finish don't disguise the comparatively restrained flavor intensity with other great savannas. Big sips are a lot of fun to enjoy and less fun to look at the wallet. 84 pts wild island #984: weak attack, fermented fruit, considerably more than Cask 985, but also considerably less fruit and volume on the palate. The finish is also relatively long and the absolute strength, here the cask comes through a little. 85 pts. wild island #987: similarly weak as 989. somewhat woodier and more bitter than its colleagues from the tasting. Cognac/armagnac very clear in the finish. The finish is absolutely great and takes the rum to a whole new level. Would have blindly guessed an Agricole here. I like 83 pts madras #496: Yes, indeed! Awesome piece! From the nose, to. On the attack, it gets a little thin on the finish (complaining at a high level). A very good balance between fruit and wood, wonderful mouthfeel. Of course, the comparison to the colleagues is somewhat unfair, as we have a good. Grand Arome. I love it! 89 Maputo #988: With associations to Cask 987, only much better. Everything is more intense and better balanced. great rum! 87-88

A lovely Savanna in the traditional rum category. The nose offers a lovely framework of fruit (grape, orange, apple, yellow and tropical fruit) and spice (vanilla, hint of cinnamon) with a fresh floral note and cold tobacco. Slightly more subdued after aeration, the nose regains its fullness with the Armagnac, which adds a suave, delicate touch. The attack on the palate is powerful with armagnac, grapes, spices (ginger) and smoky, woody notes (notably coffee). The profile is more localized and fairly dry. The mouthfeel is very intense, with a degree of alcohol that might have been imagined higher than advertised. The finish is long, dry, spicy, smoky, cocoa-like, slightly earthy and herbaceous. This Savanna is warm, mineral and characterful. A fine rum that demonstrates the breadth of the Réunion distillery's expertise.

Yesterday we had a Savanna tasting evening and went through 5 and it was a pleasant surprise. The nose on this one was fruity with anise some caramel and wonderful smoky oak. The palate is well balanced and also fruity with spices, some toffee and again the smoky oak. The finish is fairly long and spicy with dried fruit and roasted oak.

somewhat like el dorado's wooden still(VSG, EHP and PM), both of them remind me of Bourbon or Rye whiskey. similar flavor in nosing and similar texture in tasting. not typically overripe tropical fruits, rather a plate of fruit in the living room which is daily edible: hints of Sherry oak whisky or Armagnac. good

Tasting a 3cl sample. 👃 Dried fruits, raisins, sour cherries, light candied fruits (plums, damsons), cooked caramel, molasses sugar, vanilla bean, various spices (pink peppercorns, pepper, star anise), smoky note of Armagnac barrel. 😋 A combination of aromas from traditional Savanna and the GA (slight note of smoked black olive) as well as the Armagnac barrel. You find the same fruits and a kick of alcohol like grape eau-de-vie with lively spices (green pepper, chili). ⛳ Rather dry, slightly bitter, dried orange, tobacco, barrel smoke, always that Armagnac imprint. 💡 Not an everyday dram, but rather something quite atypical, worth discovering 👌

Superb Savanna strongly marked by the armagnac. Beautiful indulgence
Review by Benoit Mahe
The Armagnac finish brings a nice indulgence but it's not quite to my taste.

Beautifully integrated Armagnac finish!

Nose still good, albeit dry and woody. In the mouth then very dry and woody.

nose concentrated on the solvent

Very nice harmony of Armagnac finish and Savanna fruit power. Delicious but also quite bitter, burnt and woody, you have to be up for it!
Review by Ayc
A very elegant rum with very well integrated alcohol. The armagnac finish brings complexity that takes the juice to another dimension. Above the fairly classic coconut, chocolate, caramel framework, there is a very pleasant smokiness on the nose accompanied by a very slight glue (not really solvent esters) that brings an unexpected kick. On the palate the above markers are there except the glue. (The smokiness is almost sulfurous, almost, just a hint). There are orange peels in the middle of the mouth and a nice chew. The finish is long. The empty glass nose leans towards more tropical fruits, even banana. A beautiful bottle, which without being exuberant, does not lack complexity.

Very beautiful rum that combines indulgence and balance, complex and perfect integration of the alcohol.

I tasted this "Mer" at the same time as the other three Wild Edition 1. Unsurprisingly, it is obviously below the two big aromas, but I was still surprised and really enjoyed this rum! It has a very nice nose, just lacking a bit of intensity. The Armagnac cask finish is noticeable and gives it a rather unusual profile. On the palate, the attack is fruity and the alcohol is well integrated. You find notes of grape and spices. The rum is rather dry, quite intense, with a slight vegetal side. The finish is beautiful, fruity, and quite long. Overall, a very nice discovery that pleasantly surprised me despite a slightly too light aromatic intensity (knowing that I’m tasting it alongside big aromas, that plays a role...).

Bottlings for the Wild, Island series, number one Bottlings somewhat sidelined compared to the forest, but it's a very appreciable traditional just like Baleine. After a few minutes of airing, you notice on the nose notes of dried fruits, nuts, generally typical of agricoles, but with a nice creaminess of the grape, brought by the Armagnac cask. On the palate, nice grape compote, nice expression of the cask, nothing to complain about, lively alcohol, a beautiful 16 years old, finish long on dried grape.

That's a beautiful little bottle, tasted to get back in the saddle after green coconut curry chicken. Nice length, floral at the end of the length. Fruit, indulgence, very nice.

Rums from the Savanna distillery are some of my favorites. I recommend everyone to try especially the ester-heavy pieces like Grand Arome or HERR. You haven't felt so much fruit in just a few drops of liquid for a long time.
