One taster called this a "new Clarendon benchmark," and the crowd mostly agrees. Give it time in the glass: it opens bone-dry and heavily woody with a long bitter finish, then citrus, banana, menthol, leather and dark chocolate push through. This is an atypical Jamaican — sombre, tannic, astringent, as intense as any high-ester but pointed at the dark end. At 63.1% the alcohol stays well integrated.

Day 2 of the Samples de calendar and tasted again a year and a half later. Forest honey and oily color. Old wood nose of worn leather and creosote with citrus and umami. Lively alcohol on the palate, but the aromas come through immediately. Welcome to an English club! The butler brings a very old whisky in a crystal decanter on a silver platter. Old leather, encaustic wood, cold tobacco, fireplace... The finish is long and balanced, very woody (but I'm surprised by the venerable age of this rum). One tiny flaw for my taste, a little too much bitterness on the finish. A legendary rum! My money was on an old Demerara. Empty glass, it's a festival of unsuspected aromas! Beautiful, complex and yet less savory than its red-labeled brother.

2x Sapiens 1984 side-by-side with a Fine Drams 1995 EMB for reference. On the nose, both Sapiens are very intense and complex with quite some different layers evolving over time. Excellent! The higher proof version is even a hint ahead with more candid fruits and bit more depth. Looking at the palate: you shouldn’t be afraid of a „light“wood influence in your rum to enjoy those. There is lots of it and there is bitterness, yet I don’t mind that at all but enjoy both Sapiens very much. The lower proof bottling comes with a more balanced and uniform evolution on the palate. Bitterness is noticeable on the finish. The high proof bottling comes with even more intensity and a bit more complexity. Bitterness comes earlier in the evolution but is less profound on the finish as the finish shows a bit more complexity. Asome stuff 😍

Direct comparison of the two Rum Sapiens 1984 bottlings (with a small Fine Drams 1997 EMB as a control rum and to pass the time while the two large ones are breathing) The 69% has the more intense (candied, oily, thicker) nose as soon as it is poured, whereas the 63.1 seems somewhat more reduced. We also poured the control rum ... the "weaker" 1984 is clearly more intense and thicker and sweeter than the 1997, which gives us hope for the future. Both definitely have a great nose. After a little (longer) standing time, they are more similar. After a while, the stronger one tends towards leather, wood, menthol and snuff, while the younger one remains more candied. Both consistently at a high level. On the palate, of course - without any great surprise - somewhat woody, but extremely delicate. Woody, tannins, bitter ... but in a good way. The low proof is somewhat softer, rounder, oilier. The high proof is more complex, longer and more complex with more spines and edges. Both very good and actually closer together than the ratings reflect. For me, the new Clarendon benchmark.

Floral, spice, cherry, some banana, toasted, tropical ripeness, rhubarb, wonderful peppery scent, generally present spice but balanced by tropical fruits. Slightly iodine medicinal with barrel. On the palate, surprisingly juniper and currant appear. Dry and somewhat bitter, as well as tar in the finish. A "cool" feeling in the finish, probably from menthol. Slightly reminiscent of Caroni, I think.

Great Clarendon. On the nose lots of barrel, especially oak, but also quite spicy. Also a hint of citrus fruits. On the palate similar, wood/oak, also dark chocolate as well as some ester and citrus fruits.

On aeration, yellow fruits and pineapple arise, molasses is floral, minty, pastry, nougat, leather, vanilla join, some rubber. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is very intense, slightly imbalanced with medicinal notes like esters, varnish, camphor, polish, dry and tannic, slightly bitter with strong barrel impact and toasted wood notes, helping to neutralize intensity, like dark chocolate, toffee, nuts, fudge, mocha, leather, spicy with allspice, anise, vanilla, peppery, oily, creamy, fruity with tropical, citrus fruits, molasses is floral. 9:The finish is long, dry&tannic, balanced, medicinal with wax, menthol, rubber, barrel impact is strong with toasted oak notes like coffee, dark chocolate, spicy with green pepper, fruity with tropical, red, citrus fruits, molasses is dark with licorice, black tea, earthy with cigar tobacco.

Both Rum Sapiens 1984 are brilliant: the 69% more powerful, edgier, with leather, wood, menthol; the 63.1% rounder, sweeter, oilier. High complexity, great nose - close to each other. For me, a new Clarendon benchmark with a photo finish for the 69%. Really great tasting experience! Thanks to Rumurmel for the sample!

An incredibly dense, heavy and concentrated rum. No wonder after 36y of tropical maturation. Unusually fruity on the nose, some banana, lots of citrus fruits, as well as leather polish and aniseed. Then bitter on the palate, very astringent and slightly salty, fresh and fruity. Grapefruit and bitter orange meet menthol, burnt caramel and fresh green Kampot pepper fermented with sea salt. The almost minty freshness is highly exciting. Never overdone and the alcohol is perfectly integrated. Grandiose bottling. In direct comparison with the red "High Proof", this is much more balanced, more elegant and less demanding. I almost like it better today, but overall they are on a par for me! A very old Clarendon with a lot going for it. The nose is complex and rather mysterious, almost closed. Woody, spicy and leathery notes appear at first, followed by toasty notes. Esters and glue add their medicinal character, while fruit (dried fruit, banana, citrus) is slow to appear, only becoming more noticeable after aeration. The profile is very dark and bitter on the palate. The attack is powerful, carried by both fruity and acidic notes and very spicy spices. The bitterness comes with dark chocolate, leather and intense, dry oak. The alcoholic power continues despite the reduction. Clearly an atypical Jamaican profile, just as intense as the high esters. The finish is long, dark and tannic, with leather, chili, barrel, roasted notes, dark chocolate, coffee and fruity flavors of red fruit, dried fruit and citrus. There's a strong astringency on this profile. Surprisingly more raw than its Full Proof cousin, with an assumed power, to the detriment of some aromatic notes, this Clarendon remains an outstanding profile.

It smells a little closed and incomplete, clarendon tart/acid, a little flat. Heavy woody tones, but only medium to heavy(Velier 69% > Velier 63.1% > TAA&TB 62%). Sherry hints are too dominant: sour, red fruit, prunes, dry prunes, mulled wine and ginger, spicy. Although rich and full, it is extremely monotonous and unbalanced.

Nose clear monymusk. Very soft and oily in the mouth. Intense wood flavors in the finish. Does not get tired of it though. Suits him. But I would never buy for the price. Tasty he is but.

Really very close to the red Sapiens. Woody here too, lots of menthol, slightly vinegar but less ostensible citrus note. Tobacco, leather and caramel cream candy. Fruit goes towards currant and green apple. Slightly soapy.Also very astringent but not as bitter as the other on the palate. Soapy citrus notes with violet and clove. Some caramel. Seems slightly green overall. Woody in the finish, green tea, hay.About more pleasing and less angular compared to the red Sapiens. But not worse...

The 1984 Wedderburn MMW needs some time in the glass. At first, it was quite woody with a long bitter finish, but the more time it got, the better the rum became. Fruity notes came through, menthol, tobacco. Although the wood note still dominated. It didn't fully convince me, but still nice to have had it in the glass.

I've had a few different bottlings from the distillery's '84 Clarendon, and they're all similar in their very intense, woodsy expression, which gradually fades into the background and is replaced by fruit. The finish is long and offers several levels.

One breathes in the antique furniture of noble wood, notes of sweet spices clove, cinnamon, mace, black pepper, powerful dry attack, on the spices clean racy line a very fine beast!
