Savanna The Wild Island Edition - Baleine 2012

A cane-juice Savanna from Réunion finished in Calvados casks — that apple-orchard twist is the whole story here. Expect crisp apple and tarte tatin over grassy, herbal cane, with wet tobacco and smoky oak carrying a long, earthy finish. It drinks oily at 57.6% but the alcohol sits well integrated. Members who don't usually reach for Savanna's agricoles keep coming back to this one.

fort dauphin #989: This bottling is something for collectors. Searching for aromas during tasting is extremely arduous. Candied fruits, some fruit yogurt, very light on the palate with a short finish. Despite the low ABV, the alcohol is not well integrated. wild island #985: Good fruity start with some wood and candied light fruits. Fermented fruit in the finish, also pastry and fruit yogurt. Great mouthfeel and a nice medium-long finish don't deceive about the comparatively restrained aroma intensity compared to other great Savannas. Big sips are a lot of fun to enjoy here and less so when looking at the wallet. 84 points wild island #984: Weak start, fermented fruit, clearly more than in Cask 985, but also significantly less fruit and volume on the palate. The finish is also relatively long and the absolute strength, here the cask comes through a bit. 83 points. wild island #987: Similarly weak as 989. A bit woodier and more bitter than the tasting colleagues. Cognac/armagnac in the finish very distinct. The finish is absolutely great and lifts the rum to a whole new level. Might have guessed an Agricole blind here. I like it 83 points madras #496: Hell yeah! Awesome stuff! From the nose to the start, in the finish it gets a bit thin (complaining at a high level). A very good balance between fruit and wood, wonderful mouthfeel. Sure, the comparison to the colleagues is a bit unfair since we have a good Grand Arome here. I love it! 89 Maputo #988: With associations to Cask 987, only much better. Everything more intense and better balanced. Great rum! 87-88

Rums from the Savanna distillery are some of my favorites. I recommend everyone try especially the ester-heavy pieces like Grand Arome or HERR. You haven't felt so much fruit in just a few small drops of liquid for a long time.

Savanna in the agricole style, this rum has a strong floral and herbal influence on the nose, lots of plants and vegetal freshness with spices that enhance it all. The sugarcane is perceptible, as well as the calvados finish which adds tangy apple notes. Citrus and wood complete this very typical profile. The attack on the palate is very agricole. The spices compete with the flavors of herbal plants, vegetation and sugarcane. The fruits and the barrel are absorbed in the battle by the oak, which manages to sneak into the palate. The vesou gives a smooth side on the palate that adds a bit of sweetness to a profile strongly marked by vegetal dominance. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is long, herbal, vegetal and earthy, but also warm and strongly spicy. Sugarcane, oak and smoky notes complement each other to give a concentrated ensemble strongly influenced by the raw material and the terroir. A young profile compared to other vintages from the house, but it manages well with a nice aromatic duality, even if it lacks a bit of depth at the base.

This one scored a bit less than the previous one, but it's still a very good rum. The nose is lightly fruity with a more vegetal and grassy note. Like walking in the moores in the morning. There is also spice and wet tobacco as well and a hint of oak. The palate is a bit sweet, complex and oily (draws nice curtains) with fruit and earthy notes. Tobacco and smoky oak is here as well and compliments the overall palate. The finish is long with tobacco and smoky oak and in the back i pick up some peat.

A beautiful Savanna rum turned towards apple and spices. A certain bitterness though but very well controlled!

Not my preferred Savanna style, but it’s not a bad bottling either. Alcohol is well integrated. Slightly grassy notes, some spices, and a fruity touch from the Calvados cask.

The calvados has marked this young Savanna a bit too much for my taste. Still quite decent for its age.

The Calvados finish is very subtle, barely noticeable.

The base rum in sugarcane juice and finish in calvados casks gives this bottling a nose full of flowers, grass and apples. On the palate, the apples from the calvados are again very pronounced, but in my opinion that definitely doesn't harm the rum. Nice piece.

Savanna Wild Island "Baleine". This is a 57.6 degree single cask agricole brut de fût aged for 6 years and finished in a Calvados cask. 👃: The first nose is dry, solvent and glue appear then notes of dried fruits and wood come in. It reminds me of the Longueteau XO Carafe but more manly. Followed by apple, chocolate and a liqueur like mon chéri then the glue returns. The Calvados cask finish is clearly recognizable. 👄: On the palate, dried fruits dominate then herbal notes, nuts, apple and iodine appear at the end. The finish is average but the alcohol is very well integrated. I clearly prefer the Savanna Grand Arôme and Tradi but this Agricole is successful for a 6 year old. Its launch price for a 50cl seems too high to me. Score: 81/100. I specify that for me a rum scoring over 80/100 is a very good rum. ;-) Insta @ccajerem

The calvados has really marked this rum. It's quite impressive. You either like it or not, but I found it pretty good.

I tasted this "Baleine" at the same time as the other three Wild Edition 1. For me, it's the least good of the four. On the nose, it gradually reveals itself over time but remains rather discreet. The Calvados side is quite present, but finding other aromas is quite difficult. On the palate, it is just as discreet. The woody, sweet, and apple notes are the most present. The finish is rather short, with woody and Calvados notes. In conclusion, this rum is too discreet, both on the nose and on the palate. It is clearly less surprising than the "Mer," which pleasantly surprised me during the tasting.

Here is a raw agricole rum aged in calvados barrels from Réunion. An atypical profile for this island which mainly produces traditional rum made from molasses. You can say that the Savanna distillery shows creativity by offering, in addition to agricole and traditional, a grand arôme rum. On the nose, you clearly find apple with scents of tarte tatin enhanced with sliced almonds. On the palate, an "oily" texture with the apple becoming more present. It remains very smooth despite the strength that gives it a nice length.

The influence of Calvados sublimates this Savanna and brings a lot of indulgence to this vegetal agricole. Usually not a fan of Savanna's agricoles, this one caught my attention, beautiful balance between the tart apple and the herbaceous to even earthy notes.
