Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: On the nose we are greeted by a striking fruitiness that increasingly combines with Caroni-typical notes of rubber, tar and some caramel. On the palate, the aforementioned aromas pair with a rich menthol note, the high alcohol content also comes into play, some oxidation is recommended. Overall at a very high Caroni level, promising exquisite quality (the tropical stored bottlings are simply in a league of their own). From the also very convincing 2000 vintage one of the - relatively speaking - weaker bottlings, due to the not entirely smoothly integrated alcohol. Nevertheless: Those who find their way to Caroni with such bottlings are on an enviably high-quality path. We are talking about a release that approaches the 9.0 point threshold.

On the nose, freshness and menthol. Nice dirty caroni notes, nougat and then very fruity, mango and passion fruit. The long time in the barrel shows mainly through various spices.In the mouth a lot of nougat and wood. The finish is surprisingly short.Despite the pronounced Caroni notes and the 64% rather tame. Nougat, lots of menthol and lots of fruit.

Spirits Museum Tasting March 29th, 2025. A complex nose marked by a vegetal and fresh side. Pastry cream, tar, and rubber. Tropical fruits with juicy mango are not far but remain in the background. On the palate, also this freshness with quite pure mint comes to the forefront. Tropical fruits (mango), discreet wood, a slight spiciness, and mechanical workshop notes form a complex second plane. The finish is long, balanced, and fresh.

Spontaneously tried two randomly selected Caronis on the terrace with Jarek while swapping samples. In the duel were the RX6598 and the RX7335. Without question, these are two top bottlings. However, I liked the 2000 bottling a little better than the 1996, as it was fruitier and fresher without skimping on the "dirty" Caroni.

Tropical 2000 Caroni with lots of beautiful caramel notes. Praline, nougat, vanilla, caramel candy with tobacco, leather and cola in harmony with rubber and (initially) a lot of menthol with some crushed black pepper. After a while, tropical fruits appear and the menthol becomes less and the rum becomes more complex overall.

9,3:On the nose, menthol, rubber and tar, petrol hints, citrus and yellow fruits, roasted wood notes with butterscotch, praline, roaated nuts, spicy with umami, vanilla, smoky with bacon, elegant, herbaceous molasses, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the wood is slightly resinous, spicy with pepper, perhaps allspice, cola and fudge are out, melon, the molasses brings tobacco, black tea and flowery touch...very balanced 9,1:On the palate, the attack is strong at first with industrial notes like tar, rubber, plastic and menthol, slightly metallic and soapy, quickly balanced with roasted wood notes like butterscotch, chocolate, roasted nuts, spicy, creamy vanilla and yellow, citrus fruits, as molasses participates with chesnuts and licorice. When the rum is well rested, various fruits arise like mango, maracuja, dried fruits like apricots, some candied, dirty and chemical tones with Cl, smoky wood with bacon, confectionery, salty, peppery and underneath all this complexity, some minty hints. 9,1:The finish is long, dry and tannic, darker with burnt, smoky wood notes, caramelized, pairing industrial, chemical tones and various fruits with tropical, yellow, citrus, dark molasses with black tea, chesnuts hints, cigar tobacco, flowery touch. A delicious, complex and well-balanced, full-bodied rum!😋.

4th Employees Tasting: a very good Caroni with an interesting combination of dirty aromas, menthol, and cola. The classic markers are present as well as a slightly higher residual sweetness compared to other Caronis.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Waouh. Slightly gasoil / smoky nose, strong and fills up the nostril. Covers all of your mouth, very « nappant », same taste of slight smokiness, but complexity as well. Very long finish. A real treat

This release requires drops of water or you're going to burn from the inside of your mouth. The finish is extremely long and flavours keep popping up in the finish for several minutes. A good one if you like a cigar to go with your rum 😉

The 2000 Basedo Ramsarran is very well balanced. Typical dirty Caroni notes, menthol, wood, fruity and a pleasant sweetness. But it needs some time in the glass as the alcohol integration is not perfect. Still a very good tropical aged Caroni.

Also again complex and intense. Menthol in front, very slightly sour, somewhat buttery. Stale cola, so citrus and caramel. Very light dry white pepper. Very faint cherry. Oak with vanilla. Complex palate. Sweetly acidic, menthol and some muted chestnut. Oily it is, towards polish. I like it very much.

Uhh, this is an exciting Caroni. On the nose I smell menthol, spruce, essential oils. In the mouth, the aroma is omnipresent. I feel reminded of a cold candy. When inhaled, the mouth is downright chilled. At first, I found the rum too one-sided, because not much was happening except menthol. But after half an hour in the glass, I taste again - and discover a completely different rum. Much more complex, the spruce is barely present. If I didn't know better, I could swear I had an unusual Uitvlugt in the glass.
