Maybe one of the best rums I've ever tasted! A really beautiful experience! A really intense and complex rum that changes minute by minute, with an endless finish! For those who have the chance to try it, it's absolutely a must!

Day 8 of the Samples de Luxe calendar and tasted again a year and a half later. A nose of varnish first, followed by old wood, smoky citrus and a very refreshing menthol. A little less racy and vigorous than its green-label brother. Explosion of flavors on the palate with everything there was on the nose, plus some bitterness and a little saltiness/acidity. Beautiful tropical fruits and dried fruit blends. A finish marked by wood, (this must be an aged rum) and clearly long. Quite an experience to have the chance to taste this rum, whose aromas evolve as time goes by. Fascinating! Better than its green-labeled brother, but the difference is much less clear-cut than on first tasting. More freshness and more complex aromas. The empty glass also reveals unsuspected aromas.

95% Angels Share and 69% cask strength, the key figures are already quite impressive... But now to the aroma: Excitingly tropical, fruity & logically extremely woody bitter aroma profile, yet still just barely tweaked before overwooding. I find the intense menthol note particularly exciting, as well as the slightly sweet and sour notes of overripe tropical fruits, then again floral and bitter lavender tea and generally lots of tannins. The bitterness is understandably quite dominant after 36y tropical aging but still not too dominant. Very close to overwooding. The green Rum Sapiens with 6% less is much more relaxed and less demanding in direct comparison. Overall, both are actually on a par for me, the red "High Proof" is more complex, spicier and more intense. The green "Low Proof" is more elegant and balanced, as well as more fruity. Definitely great stuff, but I definitely wouldn't afford it for >€1000. But then again, you could do worse with that money! 😃

2x Sapiens 1984 side-by-side with a Fine Drams 1995 EMB for reference. On the nose, both Sapiens are very intense and complex with quite some different layers evolving over time. Excellent! The higher proof version is even a hint ahead with more candid fruits and bit more depth. Looking at the palate: you shouldn’t be afraid of a „light“wood influence in your rum to enjoy those. There is lots of it and there is bitterness, yet I don’t mind that at all but enjoy both Sapiens very much. The lower proof bottling comes with a more balanced and uniform evolution on the palate. Bitterness is noticeable on the finish. The high proof bottling comes with even more intensity and a bit more complexity. Bitterness comes earlier in the evolution but is less profound on the finish as the finish shows a bit more complexity. Asome stuff 😍

Direct comparison of the two Rum Sapiens 1984 bottlings (with a small Fine Drams 1997 EMB as a control rum and to pass the time while the two large ones are breathing) The 69% has the more intense (candied, oily, thicker) nose as soon as it is poured, whereas the 63.1 seems somewhat reduced. We also poured the control rum ... the "weaker" 1984 is clearly more intense and thicker and sweeter than the 1997, which gives us hope for the future. Both definitely have a great nose. After a little (longer) standing time, they are more similar. After a while, the stronger one tends towards leather, wood, menthol and snuff, while the younger one remains more candied. Both consistently at a high level. On the palate, of course - without any great surprise - somewhat woody, but extremely delicate. Woody, tannins, bitter ... but in a good way. The low proof is somewhat softer, rounder, oilier. The high proof is more complex, longer and more complex with more spines and edges. Both very good and actually closer together than the ratings reflect. For me, the new Clarendon benchmark.

04.09.2022 Meeting up for a nice after event party at my hotel. Good rum and food spread over a full day. Nose Wood, light roasted, medium fruity, polish, light mint, faint caramel. Palate Oily, wood, roasted, dried fruits, light mint, anise, light caramel. Finish Very long, wood, mint, light caramel, plum.

A Clarendon monument. The nose is highly aromatic and more expressive than its High Proof cousin. Very fruity (banana, pineapple, cherry, apple, lime, mango, papaya), the framework continues with a more mellow woodiness, shimmering spices and floral and menthol notes that bring a welcome breath of freshness to the profile. A light medicinal touch intrudes on the olfactory profile with nail polish and esters. A remarkable profile. The attack on the palate is much more controlled. The profile is less extreme and more refined. If bitterness and astringency are the order of the day, spicy notes, empyreumatic flavors and menthol bring a certain brilliance to the rum. Fruit (papaya, mango, pineapple, lime) rounds out the flavors, while coffee, dark chocolate and caramel add their share of deliciousness. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is very round, soft but aromatic, with exotic fruits, citrus and prunes, woody notes, dark chocolate, spices such as vanilla and aniseed, leather, menthol and earthy notes. A very elegant, well-balanced profile with lovely, complementary and exuberant aromas. If the price is debatable, its quality as a great rum is undeniable.

Right from the nose it kicks off; dense sweet associative scents, lots of tropical fruit, mango, vanilla, barrel, bourbonesque, meaty, a bit dirty, banana, smoke, sugar, dry. Very tropical also in the mouth, it changes a lot with this rum. Mint comes in, tobacco, floral notes in the bouquet, copper taste, wonderfully long finish, just nicely lingering. Somewhere also mocha, cocoa and tannins. Very intense and complex story. But a lot of fun.

Once again a rum to linger over... Outstanding nose, very multi-faceted and complex. Red fruit, some ester mint, caramel and old cask. Excellent taste. Nice oily consistency more fruit than on the nose chocolate mint red berries papaya red pepper very balanced and harmonious not at all woody or over the top....

Well, the nose is really very good, not too much was promised. Unfortunately, the bottling cannot keep this promise on the palate. In my opinion, it has simply been in the cask too long, which you can clearly taste, which definitely spoils a better rating. Nice to have tasted, but nothing more. If the nose wasn't so outstanding, it probably wouldn't have even cracked the 8.

On aeration, it becomes slightly metallic, new medicinal tones express themselves like varnish, wax, fermented vinegar, melon and papaya arise, roasted nuts, coffee, molasses is earthy, perfumed. 9:On the palate, the attack is medicinal, slightly industrial, dirty with menthol, wax, rubber, barrel impact is strong with roasted/toasted wood notes like dark chocolate, caramel, pastry, spicy with allspice, anise, vanilla, ginger peppery, fruity with tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, banana, papaya and molasses is floral, earthy with cigar tobacco. 9,2:The finish is long, dry&tannic, medicinal with menthol, rubber, slightly dirty, chemical with phenol, molasses is earthy with cigar tobacco, minty, grassy with hay, sugarcane hints join, oak is toasted with dark chocolate, coffee, toffee, vanilla, oily, smoky, barrel impact is strong, fruits are tropical, overripe, fermented, joined by dairy hints, creamy.

Beautiful, red-gold color. In the evening it's still 28 degrees Celsius, so the alcohol evaporates right away... ☀️ Correspondingly strong nose. Alcohol, solvent and polish dominate. Wonderful! Plenty of banana bread and dried fruit. Little wood and spice for its age. Mint. Extremely complex. Hammer nose. I love this smell! 😃 Extremely oily in the mouth. One micro sip is enough to immerse yourself in a paradisiacal Jamaica. Add a few drops of water and the nose becomes even more balanced and beautiful. Sweet-woody-spicy-dry fruits in the mouth. A little rounder now. Long, woody-spicy finish. A powerhouse. Great aromas. Lots of banana bread. A mega rum. So good the rum, so ugly the label.😂 Thanks to Bonn, awesome! 🥳

Very nice dark color in the glass! Nose: wow! There's so much in it and everything is so balanced, not a trace of too much cask! Palate: super oily, now more bitter but not too much, peppery Finish: bitterness increases, licorice, still fruity, lots of cask, eternally long and then intensifies in the direction of ammonia. What a rum! These old Monymusk rums are real Jamaican heavyweights But the finish is already too bitter for me. But all in all an excellent rum, unfortunately very expensive.

Both Rum Sapiens 1984 are brilliant: the 69% more powerful, edgier, with leather, wood, menthol; the 63.1% rounder, sweeter, oilier. High complexity, great nose - close to each other. For me, a new Clarendon benchmark with a photo finish for the 69%. Really great tasting experience! Thanks to Rumurmel for the sample!

At first it was 91, but I took it down because of the wood influence. It could maybe have been a bit rounder as well, but 69% is not to be underestimated 😅 very happy to have sampled this in my glass as it’s from my birth year.

Wow this is really impressive, an extremely powerful drink! It starts on the nose with enamel and tropical fruit, then caramel and a good mentholate. The palate is very bitter cocoa and dark chocolate, astringent and extremely spicy, with pepper and cask taking the lead. It evolves opening up not a little to caramel notes and fruit pulp. In the finish the 'bitterness and barrel remain persistent and give way to plums and earthiness.

At the beginning the alcohol bites properly, after that has evaporated, comes wood, come dried fruits, something slightly vinegares with a little clove, it seems slightly metallic with solvent. A subtle caramel note towards creamy sweetness is found and a minty citrus freshness.Man, very astringent and bitter on the palate. Woody. And then slightly soapy with violet and citrus with currant. Menthol comes through now too. Tobacco out the back. The finish remains bitter, soapy, woody and goes towards hay.You can taste the age but it splits....

Edit: the fruits remain quite present, rather in syrup, a bit acidic. A beautiful beast of concentration this rum, another level above compared to the 1995. Phew, it's intense, heavy and concentrated! You find the Clarendon DNA, especially on the nose. On the palate, the fruitiness disappears and a very dark, black, burnt frame with a veil of caramel imposes itself. Definitely a geek rum!

An excellent piece compared to its "green" sibling, and it has to be said here that this is a wonderful piece. These old Clarendons with their giant angel tax are great.. but as it happens, they come with a price.

Barely poured into the glass, you can already feel that the tasting is going to be concentrated and intense. A very, very old rum, but still fiery on the palate, with a finish that is longer than long.

A wonderful conclusion to my vacation. I'll keep it short because the previous reviews somehow all hit the mark. A very good complex rum. The 35 years in the barrel are really astonishing, especially the ABV and the complexity in the wood are impressive. The tannins work excellently. This is paired with a nice mint note, great. If you like complex, woody, bitter rums, here you get a candidate that is rare in the rum world, especially not with this ABV.

Thanks to Serge for the sample. Great nose, wonderfully intense and balanced. On the palate also very good, although a few fewer years in the cask would certainly have helped here. For me, the 1997 Clarendons remain the benchmark, but still a great privilege to be able to taste a rum of this kind.

After some minutes in the glass we can even spot some hazelnut creme, as if it spent some time in an Oloroso sherry butt (has it?). With water: The Funk get's even stronger, adding a wagon full of lavender and tiger balm. This nose is a blast! Palate The train turned into a oaky rollercoaster that just throws the flavours around like a natural force. The body is a heavyweight, accompagnied by strong cocoa and oak bitterness. The bitterness and the tannins are clearly too dominant, but it's fun though. The strong menthol note of many very old cask spirits is also ready. The sweetness of the nose is almost gone, just noticeable by some old, dried mangos and pineapples. With water: A bit more digestible and almost like fermented mint tea now. Finish We only knew that the Highlander lives forever, but it seems that the same is true for this jamaican superhero. Not sure if that's good or bad. The fermented mint tea is sticking on our tongue for hours.
