Sweeter and rounder than most people expect from a Caroni — the tar and burnt rubber are all there, but toffee, orange and dark berries cushion them. At 64.3% the alcohol stays surprisingly well integrated, so it sips without a wall of heat. One reviewer flags heavy tannins and a dry, barrel-driven finish, and a few first-timers found it a touch tame for the hype. Still, most call it a balanced, approachable way into the Caroni style.

My first Caroni bottle, the second is just about to be split and emptied. The alcohol is very well integrated and the typical dirty Caroni aromas are very present. Ideal for (soon-to-be) poor Caroni disciples =D

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the height of its glory a rum that was added at a ratio of 1:10 into naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery stopped production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is truly a unique rum.

8,4:On the nose, roasted wood notes with toffee, nutty, oaky, rubber and menthol, dried apricots and raisins, tropical fruits, are the first thing we notice, slightly rigid. On aeration, the rum is dirty, industrial with tar, the fruits citrus and berries, the molasses herbaceous, as new roasted wood notes, slightly smoky like coffee, confectionery, spicy with vanilla, arise. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is tasty, but a bit alcoholic, dry, slightly sweet with roasted wood notes like cream toffee, chocolate, then leather, peppery and smoky, industrial with rubber and tar, fruity with citrus, dried apricots and cherries, as the molasses is herbaceous. 8,5:The finish is long, dry&tannic, roasted wood notes with spice overpower others, the barrel impact is very strong, still we could notice rubber and tar, citrus and berries, herbaceous molasses, dark with black tea..

Beautiful HTR Caroni, typical aromatics for the 1998 vintage. Great complexity, the intense dirty notes are perfectly embedded in caramel sweetness and spices. A few fresh berry notes are also added on the finish, adding variety. Beautiful barrel selection.

Nose: The alcohol is barely perceptible! Woody, spicy notes predominate, very pleasantly mild. On the palate, the rum is creamy soft and spreads well in the mouth! Woody tones predominate again, slightly bitter and a little tar taste! The alcohol content is hardly noticeable here either! It has a slightly bacony, roasted note. The woody, spicy note continues in the finish! It remains medium long ..... A good rum, but not outstanding for me and therefore too expensive in my opinion

Nice mechanical nose :-D slightly dirty raisin dragged through burnt rubber. Great roasty taste. Raisiny, rubbery. A great rum that probably got me hooked on the Caroni taste. Still one of my Caroni favorites. On after-tasting: God damn what an awesome rum!!

A quite nice Caroni, which is quite pronounced on the dirty medicinal side. Lots of tar, phenol, and rubber can be found, and the relatively high alcohol content is quite well integrated. However, the fruity aromas are rather scarce, which makes the enjoyment somewhat one-sided.

On the nose immediately dried, sulfured apricot, cherry vinegar, metallic. Peach aromas, woody, tobacco, leather. Freshly opened cocoa powder tin. Well integrated alcohol. On the palate intense, quickly moving towards spicy, tobacco and leather. Now also a bit dirty, roasted. Metallic, but then quickly gone again. Leather on the finish. Overall nice and pleasant. Alcohol well integrated.

Great and round 98er Caroni from the old RA times. Unusually sweet, almost thick in viscosity on the palate, great aroma of the typical burnt Caroni rubber with blackberry, apricot and black pepper, stock honey and toffee as a fruity counterpoint. Definitely very drinkable!

Typical tar/ash notes for Caroni. An inviting fruitiness (all the berries). Not so much Diesel this time. More leaning towards the red fruits than the "chemical notes". Maybe not the heaviest and most typical Caroni. But all in all very very tasty. Nicely balanced and complex. I might get a bottle of this.

Nase: recht mild, fruchtig, süß, dazu Leder, rauchig und eine Messerspitze Gummi Gaumen:süß, rauchig,dunkle Schokolade,Leder, röstig und ein wenig Gummi Abgang:Mittellang, geprägt durch den Gaumen,dazu ein paar Beeren unf Ingwer Der SBS hat mir besser gefallen,durch die deutlicheren Caronigene im Mund,auch wenn die Nase mir hier leicht vorn lag. Im Vergleich war der Abgang vom SBS auch extrem lang.

Color: golden brown Nose: Sweet like orange or orange cake, toffee, leather, licorice and rubber. Taste: Spicy toffee in the mouth, then some orange and forest honey. Then it gets spicier and sharper. Very strong taste when swallowing, spicy-sharp with ginger and pepper, licorice and leather. Finish: Long. Warms from deep inside. Tastes like old barrel and ginger in the finish. 89 points

Very balanced Caroni, which smells nicely round on the nose. On the palate, a lot of cask influence. Maybe a bit too much. The tannins are very distinct and the bitterness present. Still nicely dry and the typical Caroni notes are there. Pleasantly dirty without being too present. Balanced. Alcohol well integrated. I like it, even if it doesn't quite reach other bottlings in the price range from Bristol or Kill Devil.
