What surprises people is how much nose this gives for the money: banana, honey, ripe fruit and a little estery funk, backed by caramel, vanilla and roasted oak. On the palate it turns sweet and rounder, and the alcohol pushes past the fruit a bit. Most tasters reach for it as a mixer, though a few happily sip it. Reads clearly sweetened.

Very good as a mixer goin from you basic rum cola, dark & stormy to some much more complex cocktails. The tabacco and smoked from the bourbon barrels give this rum a very unique caracter. A bar keeper - keeping it in stock all the time

Overall an OK rum that probably serves well in drinks like Dark’N’Stormy. Had a glass of this rum after a better dinner at Såstaholms Castle. There’s several different Plantation Original Dark with different origins. I’ve seen at least 3, Trinidad, Trinidad & Jamaica and Barbados & Jamaica. This one, Barbados & Jamaica, contains 1-3 year old Barbados rum and 10-15 year old Jamaica rum. The distillate is aged in charred American oak barrels before transported to France for some more aging, this time in former Cognac oak barrels.

The nose is full of honey and raisin with estery funk in the background. A little orange lingers in the background with a touch of tobacco. It's definitely on the sweet side. The palate is a lot less funky than the nose, less fruit forward too. There's some oaky notes and the tobacco and honey from the nose are present. I picked up a subtle pineapple hint in the background. The finish is a little hot compared to the palate. The honey still lingers but now it has been smoked. Though, it only stays for a short while. Overall this rum is a steal for the price. I know it's not fancy but it's something I can sip for days. Doesn't work for me in mixed drinks though, odd.

Exciting rum. Aroma of honey and fruit. Taste of caramel and dried fruit. The taste is intense and slightly roasted dark tones. Price-performance ratio is definitely right. There are plenty of better ones. But for this price also a lot worse

Looking at the Planteray Jamaica & Barbados version at 40%. All in all I’m positively surprised by the quality of this one. The blend is executed well with both origins recognizeable and contribution to the overall profile. Intensity is pretty good for 40 % ABV and there is no overwhelming caramel note (which I associate with older bottlings of this).

06.2024 First impression: aromatic and fruity, nice clear honey color, inviting Nose: banana, pineapple, honey Palate: the alcohol now pushes forward before the fruits, followed by a bit of wood, coffee and roasted aromas Finish: here too the alcohol dominates, albeit at a low level Overall impression: I like the nose better than the taste. I prefer to use it in hot cocoa. The original rating of 7.0 remains. 2020 Quite decent neat but not particularly impressive. Strong mixer. I discovered it as a really good addition for hot cocoa.

A sweetened blend with a round appearance, definitely with Jamaica content. Lots of fruit with honey and some smoky wood. In the mouth dominantly sweet and round, at the same time woody spicy with spicy tobacco. Almost complex! Well, but the finish is the weakest, as it somehow tastes artificially like caramelized strawberry or banana. Nevertheless, for the price actually quite a good entry-level rum.

#6348 Enjoying a few samples while watching the Eco-Challenge Fiji, man those racers are tough. If you look at the price tag you get a lot for your money. Mixes very well with a cola too. A light and sweet rum with fruts, spice and some caramel in the roasted wood.

It knows how to beguile immediately with its sweet, fruity nature on the nose. Quickly captivated, fruit and wood notes are found in the beginning, which quickly give way to the predominant honey flavor. In the finish even slightly smoky is reminiscent of a weak Jamaican. Price / performance hit for beginners and cocktail fans.very pleasing Sipper.

Also a good mixer and faithful standard companion in my bar for cocktails and tikis but also gladly seen in Cuba Libre as the much better version compared to Captain, Havana and co. The price-performance ratio is simply good and it offers great aromatics for that.

The two rums complement each other very well. This rum is therefore very complex. Rums from Jamaica are not exactly my favorites but here it fits very well together. The nose is very fruity, typical Jamaica, with the sweetness from Barbados. The taste impresses with fruitiness and sweetness with a good balance. The finish is medium and accompanied by glue, alcohol and sweetness. The rum goes well with cola, but can also be enjoyed neat, also good as a grog... I will definitely try it. If you also don't like rums from Jamaica that much, you should try this blender.

A classic Plantation which I have actually never drunk before. It's definitely good to drink, but there are much better Plantations. Tastes very herbal to me, a few Jägermeister notes. It's alright.

Pure not bad but a bit too boring and watery. Smell somewhat alcoholic but "better"/more exciting than the taste. Very short finish.Was often recommended to mix with cola, but for me much too sweet and "dark", the fresh is missing.As part of a Mai Tai but very tasty!

Very good to drink in cuba libre! But proportions i change: 1/8 juicy of lime 50ml/1.7oz this rum 120ml/4oz cola (i preffer cola zero or pepsi max)

The Plantation Dark Rum was made for mixing, there's no doubt about that. It's sweet and goes very well with cola. Even neat, it still holds up pretty well. Beginners especially like this rum. It always goes down well at a party.

Great rum that is available for shockingly little money. Quite drinkable on its own, the Jamaican component stands out pleasantly. Great for mixing, of course, but it goes a little under in more intense drinks. Personally, I therefore find it rather unsuitable for a Dark'n'Stormy.

Barbados and Jamaican styles are among my favorites so of course I find this rum to be lovely. Not very complex but the flavors are wonderful. Buttery sweet caramel spice. Goes down way too easy neat! have not really experimented with this too much in cocktails but probably would be nice in a grog or anything that would benefit from a full bodied, sweet and buttery rum. The price point on this is well below my enjoyment level so I look for the 1.75L bottles haha.

My RumRatings review from 5 years ago: I tasted the rum neat and was surprised that it is drinkable. Some sweetness, smoke, but also extremely short and a clear alcohol note. I also had a friend taste it, who estimated the rum to be much more expensive. In the end, though, more for mixing. Somehow something between Plantation's 3Star and Havana Club 7. It's tasty with cola, although I find the slightly more expensive Grand Reserva better. Could be worth the extra 5€. But for about 15€, you definitely can't go wrong here. P/L monster!!!

Pleasant brown rum from Planteray. At first a bit sweet and fruity, caramel, vanilla, then some alcoholic notes. Generally a good mixer for cola and other long drinks. But nothing exciting. Nice and better than Bacardi and others.

In my opinion, not particularly suitable for drinking neat, neither pleasant nor very unpleasant. Doesn't come through well in Ginger Beer (Schweppes, quite sharp). In cola, the rather bitter, slightly bitter taste comes through a bit, not really my thing. UPDATE: I'm leaving my old review up there for nostalgic reasons ;-) Today, with more experience, I see it quite differently, it was probably my first encounter with a slight funk, which I had perceived back then as bitter notes. Today I smell and taste, besides the light dark rum notes like spice, molasses, caramel, quite clearly banana, fruit, and ester. I now find it even quite sweet, but pleasant. Accordingly, significantly upgraded from 4.9 -> 7.0. I'm curious if I'll also find it better as a mixer than back then. Drinks: - Neat: 3.5/5 (old: 2.5/5) - Rum Cola: 2/5 - Rum Mule: 2.5/5

Finish almost non-existant. Otherwise a good enough rum, easily sippable. Probably helped well enough along in that regard thanks to some generous doseage, but it doesn't taste heavily dosed to my palate. A bit dark on the taste after the vanilla, smaller caramel and a bit fruity on the tongue. Does its job well! Works as a sipper and wonderful in cocktails. Better rums out there? Sure.

For the price, an exciting and complex nose, if a bit weak on the chest. Surprisingly much ester / varnish, tobacco and wood.In the mouth then honey-like sweetness, very mild and spicier notes. Hardly any alcohol, but also here unusual approaches of strong notes.Very good entry rum, especially for all classic cocktails. Nice mix standard.

Sweet funky heat. It has a sugary sweetness on the sip that quickly transforms into that Jamaican funk and an ethanol burn on the lips. It’s a good sipper if you know your palate and know what you like.
