HSE VSOP - Port Cask Finish
Agricole drinkers curious about a port-cask twist will find plenty here. The Martinique cane spirit still shows through, but it's wrapped in red fruit, blackberry jam, prunes and a real dose of port sweetness. Several tasters call it a genuinely easy sipper for 45%, softer and fruitier than a typical agricole. A few wish it had a touch more punch and a longer finish.

How does HSE VSOP - Port Cask Finish taste?
Aggregated from 122 community reviews.
Fruity, rounded port-finished agricole sipper Widely liked as one of the better port-cask agricoles — fruity, rounded and gentle. The catch: a couple of tasters find it a bit thin and the finish a touch short.

Bought this bottle for over a year ago from Catawiki. Rhum HSE is produced at the Le Simon distillery in Martinique. It’s distilled in a Creole column and then aged for more than 3 years in American oak barrels whereafter it’s aged for more than 8 months in casks previously used for Port wine. Overall one of the best port cask finished rums I’ve tasted.

The nose and palate clearly show that this is an agricole or distillate based on sugar cane juice. Relatively fresh and grassy with a decent hint of port wine.

HSE delivers always great Rums! I thought this would be more on the sweeter/porter side, opposite this is a rum where the Port Barrel had a great impact on the rum without overwhelming. I enjoyed this a lot🤤😎🤙🏻

Boah, another great discovery! Very pleasant Agricole-Port symbiosis, very drinkable and round. Finally a R(h)um, where the finish enhances the basic product once again. The sample is drunk, I'm afraid I have to buy a whole bottle now. 😳🤣Bin impressed and can only recommend this HSE!

#4995 23.12.2024 Enjoying some samples at home. Nose Port, wood, light berries, floral, Agricole, light plum, light nutts. Palate Naturally sweet, wood, light roasted, Port, medium spicy, light plum, floral, spice, light caramel. Finish Medium to long, wood, Port, medium spicy, medium dry, light cherry, spice, light floral. The empty glass has stronger port, caramel and light peach. Very smooth rum with just the right amount of port cask influence.

Nice entry-level Agricole. Strong vanilla note. Very strong finish due to the port finish.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A rum that clearly doesn't smuggle in the Port cask aging. The influence of the cask is felt throughout the tasting. On the nose, a myriad of red fruits, grapes and prunes jostle through the influence of alcohol. It's clear, clean and precise. On the palate, although the red fruit and port are still very much present, spicier, woodier notes make their appearance. A touch of caramel and a light floral veil also appear. Surprising but well conducted. The finish is quite long and very round, with nutmeg, cinnamon, mocha, red fruit and woody notes coming together to create a delicious rum. A clearly assertive choice for this cuvée, which will delight Port lovers, and which shows the extent to which rum can be aged without being too nauseating.

The port wine influence is noticeable.

A very good discovery rum. The finish is not overpowering and the price is top-notch!

Good and drinkable Agricole, with top PLV. For my taste, unfortunately, a little too thin, a few percent more would probably have done him good. For me, an easy sipper, and a good entry-level Agricole, although by the port finish anything but typical.
Review by Alexander Rasch
Oh well... Very pleasantly surprised. The Agricole base is still clearly recognizable with lots of wood and a good portion of fruit influence. It can do something without being particularly demanding. A real easy sipper. The 45% is ok. The alcohol is not perfectly integrated, but there's a lot here for 4 years. I would estimate it to be older with the finish. The tropical storage really pops here. P/L TOP.

I find the cask finish HSE rums a big step up from their other offerings. Good balance here across the mouth with rich fruit and delicate sugar notes. Nose is inviting with some wood but more fruit and currant with candied Christmas fruit. The mouth really brings the port notes to the front making this a very approachable and drinkable rum, more Christmas candies fruits and some balanced sweetness. The finish is slightly dry and medium length with more barrel and woody notes. A solid port cask rum

Unmistakably a rum agricole. Complex but not outstanding. The alcohol is quite dominant for my taste.
