Savanna The Wild Island Edition - Lave 2003
Poured neat in a tasting glass is really the only way to meet this one — at 66.5% it's a full-throttle Savanna Grand Arôme. Expect overripe strawberry, sour cherry, dried fruit and heavy ester funk (glue, nail polish, solvent) wrapped in unusually loud oak. Several tasters call the wood "un poil astringent," but almost everyone agrees the fruit and heat carry it.

Very intense savanna with a pronounced Grand Arôme character. The nose is dominated by fermented fruit, esters and solvent notes, accompanied by citrus zest and spicy wood. Powerful and complex on the palate with ripe fruit, herbs and a pleasant sweetness that blends harmoniously with the wood. The alcohol is excellently integrated and underlines the depth of the profile. A rum with a strong character and complexity, which for me is clearly one of the best Savanna bottlings.

Grand Arôme in its purest form meets wood: The barrel influence is finally not completely lost next to the fruit esters. Excellent representative of the Savanna Grand Arômes.
Review by Dr.Django
Just like the Wild Island Grand Arome, this one is outstanding! Very awesome rum that doesn't deliver the aromas as elegantly as the representative from the forest, but rather slams them brutally and unfiltered onto the palate. An aroma spectacle that's fun.
Review by TheRhumhoe
An intense, concentrated Savanna, as the rather flashy lava photo suggests. We get a veritable bouquet of diverse aromas, from medicinal notes (esters, glue, solvents, varnish) to fruit (strawberry, apple, raisins, tropical fruit) to spices (cinnamon, baked apple, pepper) and elegant oak. The profile is luscious, opulent and complex, living up to expectations. The attack is masterful: the full power and depth of the juice can be felt through woody notes, lively spices (cinnamon, chili, pepper), leather, phenolic notes of glue and varnish, but above all the ample, heavy fruitiness that invades the palate with strawberries, dried fruit, olive, overripe exotic fruit and citrus. This aromatic panoply is accompanied by a warmth on the palate that reminds us that we're dealing with an intense, dry, powerful rum that hides its game very well. The alcohol is really well integrated. The finish is particularly long, with a strong attachment to tropical fruits, strawberries and dried fruits, but the spicy, woody notes come with the tannins to give the finish a kick. Olive brine, medicinal notes and cognac also return in concert. A superb Savanna in its purest form, powerful and charming as can be.

Absolute Savanna Grand Arome DNA from overripe fermented strawberry and other red & tropical fruits, as well as menthol Wick ice candies and salty olive brine. Cognac subtly noticeable but only about 5%, and alcohol content of nearly 67% extremely well integrated. Extremely long finish with plenty of esters, nail polish remover, and glue. Absolutely fantastic and definitely counts among my top 5 Savannas from today onwards. Thanks to Mirco for the sample!

A somewhat stormy, somewhat dry, not so fruity Grand Arome! But still excellent!

100% vanilla The rums from Savanna Distillery are some of my favourites. I recommend everyone to try especially vuce ester pieces like Grand arome or HERR. You haven't felt so much fruit in a few little drops of liquid for a long time.

This one was also really good and we all agreed that this series was overall a really good one. The nose is very fruity with tobacco and wood and there is some ester in there as well. The palate is complex and equally fruity with sugarcane and some wood/barrel. The finish is long and fruity with wood/barrel.

Magnificent! An explosion of flavor in every direction.

5cl sample available, tasting split into 2x2.5cl. Tasted after the UC damp warehouse LMDW #714 and the Wild Island "Forest". 👃 Wow what a nose 🤩 Very complete on fruity notes (gariguette strawberry, Morello cherry, sugar-laden grapes, mango, papaya, starfruit), estery (nail polish, solvent, ether), spicy (green pepper, pink peppercorns, cinnamon). A bit of green olive fermentation. The woody aspect well present develops an intoxicating smell of rum/grape ice cream topped with salted caramel. All with a fresh touch of peppermint. Magnificent integration of the alcohol on the nose despite the 66 beasts. 93/100 😋 What a hot and intense attack! Power and concentration come to mind. It's lively on cayenne pepper, Cognac-type wood on sugar-laden dried fruits, candied citrus (kumquat, mandarin). Again the esters (glue and varnish), overripe fruits (mango, papaya, pineapple, strawberry, cherry), black olive brine. The wood is more present on the palate, with an almost smoky, musty aspect. A very dry profile where the alcohol is almost not present (all proportions kept 😉). 91/100 ⛳ Long, hot, lively, intense! Small fruit dices oscillating between candied and overripe. Menthol freshness. Then a more animal aspect on these manufactured products, briefcase leather, maybe almost a touch of cigar tobacco. 90/100 This "lava" lives up to its name! What intensity on the nose and what liveliness on the palate 🤯 A "small" organoleptic bomb! For me, it is in the top four GA tasted so far; The Chronicles > GES > Madras = Forest = Lava, depending on the form of the day 😂 P.S. Damp warehouse 10 years soon to be tasted 🤤

Magnifique produit ! A fruit compote with a lot of punch !

A great aroma very "concentrated", perfect expression of the full proof, aromas of red fruits (very ripe strawberries, cherries..) very present in the nose as well as in the mouth, very long finish. The power of the alcohol makes the note slightly lower.

Grand arôme very well mastered and successful But this type of rum still isn't my favorite...
Review by Guji Guji
Amazing rum, fruit bomb, olive oil, custard and dried fruits. The alcohol is wonderfully integrated, it's round and smooth. Endless finish ! Delicious poetry in a glass of rum!

Savanna Cross Tasting - November 2025: Aahhh... I guess I instinctively saved the best drop of the day for last. Very tasty and powerful Grand Arome, even if the wood influence is almost too strong for me.
Review by Joël
One of my favorite Savannas. Great stuff!
Review by FischeJ
Compared to it, a bit wilder, herbal, more cask influence, therefore dry on the finish. But complaining at a high level.
Review by Gaston NP
Well-balanced rum and pleasant on the nose as well as on the palate.
Review by Ayc
Magnificent, a worthy representative of the GA. The only complaint might be a very (too?) woody side, a bit astringent. But it's really very good!

I tasted La Lave at the same time as the other three Wild Edition 1. For me, it’s just a notch below Forêt. On the nose, it reminds me more of a Trad G, while Forêt evokes more of a HERR. Its profile is more vegetal than Forêt’s, more marked by solvent and less by ripe fruits. The olive is very present and clearly dominates the nose. On the palate, it’s very intense, with that strong olive note again, accompanied by tropical fruit notes (a bit less present than in Forêt) and esters. Again, it reminds me more of a Trad G than a HERR. The finish is long, dominated by olive, and slightly more powerful than Forêt’s.

Savanna exactly to my liking, the only thing I miss is a bit of technical/chemical notes in the taste and the abv could be little lower though.

The nose really fruity in the front, and then the alcohol kicks☺️💪. Wild grand Arome
