How does Don Papa Rye Cask Rum taste?
Aggregated from 49 community reviews.
Woody, whisky-forward, un-rum-like Don Papa ">Rye casks turn Don Papa into something differentewite serent. Whisky-forward, woodier and drier than the sweet standard line, but polarizing: some enjoy it as a spirit, others still find it flat.

7,8:The nose has nice smoky notes, with a strong whisky edge, juicy apricots. One can easily imagine a fire where a handful of cereals are being toasted, while one takes a whiff of the heather-laden air. On aeration, a little farmyard character develops, with straw and a slight organic touch. Then the rum enters a more familiar framework, made of spicy wood, a layer of black and red fruits with a little tannin, and a little resinous and vegetal vivacity, some glue. 7,8:The mouth is quite powerful, despite a relatively round texture. The most farmy notes are the first to touch the taste buds, then it's around the woody and toasted cereals. Some caramel note. Yep, some pancetta. The whisky aspect remains in mind, notably thanks to the white woody notes mixed with resin, cherry, and pears even dried figs. 7,5:The finish returns to slightly oily and smoky notes, even bit oaky.A little sour aftertaste, dry, but positively. Totally different than Don Papa Masskara, Don Papa Small Batch!Well, also as whisky lover, I like it. Edit:17.1.25-

Phew, next Don Papa. This one is at least a bit more pleasant on the nose. Although also artificially sweet, but direction honey and not just sugar. The Rye gives something spicy, slightly smoked caramel. The Rye also turns the watery sugar water into a slightly more pleasant, spicier spirit on the palate. Remains flat though, artificial with orange, vanilla and some pepper.Better than the standard, but far from good rum. Also really unpleasant in the finish.

I was surprised by the nose. Much more fruit then expected. Coconut and cherry behind vanilla and caramel with a soft woodiness throughout. On the palate it's definitely rye. That bourbon with more spice taste. But there's a caramel that keeps us in rum territory. A little smoky towards the end. The finish has an okay length. The rye mellows a little but the smoke and caramel hangs around longer. Honestly surprised. I was expecting to hate but this is okay.

Unusual Don Papa. Unsweetened and relatively natural. Taste but unfortunately only mediocre.

Very pleasantly surprised by this whiskey 🙃 In my opinion the cask quality of their Rye was exceptional as I totally lose the rum markers. There were no bourbon casks and so much the better as the product is sincerely natural. Not a good rum, but a good spirit.

Tasted on the Whisky and Rum festival 2022. IJmuiden. www.zeewijck.nl No sugar added Don Papa (big applause!). Not too shabby. Pretty cask driven and wood spices bit far far better than the standard sugar galore ones.

Do not know how bad a rum can taste but it warps me all here...🤢🤮

Compared to the base, another level. The aging of almost 5 years in rye barrels can be felt. Overall, a good rum and a very good business operation for these 899 bottles.
