People who chase dark, roasty rums will find plenty here: charred oak, burnt sugar, cocoa and coffee, with a leather-and-tobacco edge. It's one of the darkest glasses several tasters had seen. The recurring gripe, though, is that at 50% it drinks oddly thin and watery, and the alcohol pokes through more than the flavor. A winter sipper for dark-rum fans, not a crowd-wide pick.

8,4:On the nose, charred oak with burnt sugar, butterscotch, roasted nuts, chocolate, leather, then cocoa, candied molasses with tobacco, citrus, dried and yellow fruits, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the notes are caramelized, various spices arise like cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, slight smokiness, new dried fruits, coconut, as the molasses brings more vegetal aspect of this rum. 8:On the palate, the attack is slightly sweet, but rather diluted with charred wood notes like burnt sugar, butterscotch, cocoa, coffee, later roasted nuts, leather, spicy with cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, fruity with dried apricots, raisins, coconut and plums, as the molasses is thick, candied, earthy with tobacco, herbaceous, dark with licorice. 7,9:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, with roasted wood notes, spicy, slightly resinous and smoky, pairing dried, citrus fruits and dark molasses, hints of menthol. Unfortunately, this is nothing. Seems too alcoholic and diluted at the same time. You can taste a bit of the barrel, but that's about it. Doesn't damage nose or palate, but also leaves no lasting impression. Already forgotten.

It's hard for me to give a rating here. Yeah, it's very roasted, but I really like it :-) Otherwise, there's still some wood and a slight spiciness, but also, yeah, this rum is an easy sipper for winter.

Probably the darkest rum I've had in my glass so far. The wood and roasted aromas are therefore as expected very pronounced. Alongside that, caramel and dried fruits. Alcohol noticeable, but not too unpleasant

So here the gentlemen from 1423 selection really missed the mark the most in the world. The fact that it wouldn't be an example of pleasant alcohol integration was already suspected by the prickling on the nose. After sipping, this is confirmed, where the most intense tone is the alcoholic one. Then a bit of vanilla, maybe a little wood, but overall rather a weak piece. Edit, second attempt, lowering to 63 points

Pleasant full-bodied rum, a bit sharp on the nose

My RumRatings review from 6 years ago: The rum needs some time in the glass. I let it sit for 30 minutes. Still, there's some sharpness. The rum feels thick and full-bodied with caramel, mocha, and fruit. Lots of vanilla and oak plus other aromas make the nose pleasant. When drinking, I recommend very small sips because the rum can't quite tame its strong sharpness. It burns a bit on the tongue. But then a pleasant sweetness comes through. Without the rum being sweet. Oak, coffee, mocha, and fruits like plum, roasted notes, and a light fruit note come along. Also vanilla and some wood. A good heavy body that always struggles with the sharpness. It's not optimally integrated. The finish is medium-length with a pleasant oak note, some fruity sweetness, and light bitterness. Overall, I was a bit disappointed because I found the rum a bit too sharp. The alcohol could be better integrated. My first rum from the D.R. and I had hoped for a bit more. Reacts positively to some water. Releases more aromas. Gets a bit milder and more accessible over time. If you like heavy rums, this is the right place. I fought hard through the bottle and it doesn't work at all with Coke.

Courtesy of RumX. Overall a good rum. Despite the diluted taste, we enjoyed the pleasant spices. I cannot recommend it to new rum tasters, but to experienced individuals I would say try it. Be expected to be surprised by the different taste from what you smell - quite alcoholic and difficult to identify the various flavours. At the end you would be left with a spicy feeling on your tongue in addition to the alcoholic burn, but it does not last long.

Read full review ›It's an interesting rum, mainly because it's not made from molasses, it's a fair rum that surpasses the usual rums from the Dominican Republic, whether in production, aging, or the fact that it's a single cask, but compared to competitors in a similar price range, it doesn't stand out much. In the Czech Republic, it's sold for 1,888 CZK.
