Chairman's Reserve Master's Selection (Old Brothers & Excellence Rhum) 2000

Most tasters land on "very good, but demanding." This 20-year Saint Lucia pot still is a menthol and mint bomb wrapped in dry oak, leather, black tea and roasted bitterness, with pineapple and dark fruit underneath. Give it 15 minutes in the glass or it comes across as harsh and tannic. A few find the wood and mint too dominant; mint-and-oak fans call it a highlight.

The community says
  • Complex, well-aged
  • Menthol and mint
  • Keep in mind: Very woody

4 Chairmans in direct comparison: 1st Chairmans 1802 Very fruity, vanilla, increasingly more spice, balanced, sweeter and sweeter on the palate over time. Lots of bourbon influence. 8.5 pts. 2nd Chairmans Rum&Co Comparatively more fruit, especially cherry. Vanilla and sweet finish. 8.5 pts. 3rd Chairmans 2008, Rhumattitude Completely different, lots of bourbon influence and even more coconut! Resembles a Foursquare or Belize rum. 81 pts. 4th Chairmans Excellencerhum See astringent, lots of herbs, wood, fruit in the finish. 86 pts.

For the price you get a lot I think. Once rested you get a nicely balanced rum with light fruit and nice roasted wood. Intense and lightly dry on the palate.

The Chairman's Master's Selection series is simply a bank. Such consistently high quality with proper tropical maturation and a great variety of distillers. And away from the upward price spiral, great. At 20 years old, this one is already on the side of the wood and menthol lovers (to which I also belong) ... but still with great fruitiness. Quite quick on the nose ... it needs a little more time on the palate.

Intense! Excellent rum, complex and intense. But with two concerns for me. The first one is the woody too present with the menthol which clearly takes the upper hand at the beginning. It is necessary to leave a lot of time for the other flavors to settle down. Then the alcohol is strong, I find that it gains in pleasure with a drop of water. I am quibbling a little, it is still really good!

Then a second Chairman's afterwards. It also has a great nose, in which the mint predominates, as well as being quite woody and spicy. On the palate there is also a lot of mint and menthol, but wood is also recognizable.

Dirty pot-still chairman with leather, menthol, smoke and on the nose, as well as lots of fruit, which tends to disappear in the mouth and on the finish. Very spicy in the mouth, bitter chocolate and roasted aromas. Certainly not for everyone, but well made.

The Chairman's Reserve Legacy was one of the first rums I bought and I was amazed at the quality bottled at such an affordable standard, not realizing what was in store for me with the Master's Selection bottlings. Here, too, there is another great rum to discover, which turns out to be a real mint bomb on arrival in the mouth. Delicious!

I compared the three Chairman's Reserve 9Y RA&RTN, the 9Y Evanius Harris and the 20Y Old Brother in a crosstasting. A little unfair to the two 9Ys, but that was to be expected. The 20Y ageing did the rum a lot of good. Very complex but still round and balanced. Very tasty and my favorite in this tasting.

This rum needs to sit in the glass for a good 15 minutes in order to open up. On the nose: Woody notes and mint notes with hints of menthol dominate the profile. Under that there is leather notes and fresh apple notes. Hints of vanilla. Taste: Mint notes, woody notes, leather notes and roasted notes dominate the profile. Quite intense and strong at first. It get quite dry and black tea notes become stronger. Finish: Fresh, Menthol, roasted, woody, little bit of pepper. Medium-long finish. Interesting rum from Chairman’s Reserve and quite minty. Palate could have used some fruity notes and it was lacking that something. Usually im not a huge fan on mint notes in rums, but here they were okay. If mint notes in rums is your thing, this is the rum for you.

A very old bottling from Sainte Lucie whose intense nose presents lovely medicinal aromas (glue, solvents) and fruity (pineapple, banana, mango, lime, orange) that complement each other very well. The smoky touches on tobacco and the freshness of menthol open a new olfactory dimension to this very complete nose. Wood, leather and spices (chili, pepper, vanilla) gain ground with aeration. The profile is subtle, controlled and very pleasant. The attack on the palate is a bit brutal on the alcohol, but the aromas remain pleasant on the palate. Wood and menthol take the lead before tropical fruits and citrus add their touch. Spices and coffee come in second, the little kick becoming insistent at the end of the mouth. Leather, smoky and medicinal notes (varnish) complete a varied, dry, elegant and powerful profile. The integration of alcohol is quite good for the stated strength. The finish is very long, at the crossroads between the freshness of menthol, the tannins of wood, the bitter notes on leather, coffee and roasted aromas. The medicinal notes leave their mark at the very end, giving a dry, astringent but rather fragrant rum. A superb rum that hits like dynamite, it needs rest to be fully appreciated but will delight fans of the genre.

Second tasting and I like it. It’s very different in taste profile and a great and interesting rum. Not for the beginner but educating and a great rum reference.

For me, too much barrel influence with pronounced menthol notes.

The nose awaits with lots of pineapple, cherry, menthol, resin and some nutmeg and young wood.Taste then first really bitter, very woody, burnt and astringent with lots of tannins. When you get used to it a bit cherry, ginger, strong espresso, allspice and licorice come to it and a lot of bitter roasted notes. For me it is altogether a bit too much wood and too bitter. nevertheless for the age and alcohol strength a very good st Lucia single cask. the younger 19y old Rum Stylez I like much better in comparison....

Chairman's meets EMB95. Very nice drop, but overall there are other Chairman's profiles that I would rate a little higher.

I wanted to explore a well-aged CS rum from Santa Lucia. I’m convinced that I prefer rums between 8 up to 15 years and rather aged in Europe. Let’s see how I do with this 20y 65,1% pot still beast. C: 20y Tawny N: Dark fruits: figs, grapes, overripe super sweet peaches and new IKEA furniture. Incredible nose. Nosing it further I get a sharp fume hiding in the background. It wants so much to get in front of that amazing marmalade. After a while it does, it´s the famous pencil shaving aroma typical of some Guyanese rums. It brings this bitter almond fragrance I’ve a hard time liking. Fumes of acetone as well. M: Big mouth, full on pencil shavings and bitter almond. That sweet marmalade has no chance to get in front. Spicy as well. F: Long, pencil shaving and dark fruits. B: No
