South Pacific Rum Artesanal Fiji Rum 2001
"Erstaunlich rund für einen Fiji" is the line that keeps coming up — and that's the pitch. Ester, glue and overripe tropical fruit lead, with a strawberries-and-cream sweetness a lot of tasters didn't expect from South Pacific. Underneath: roasted notes, dark chocolate and a dry, faintly metallic finish. At 62.8% the alcohol mostly sits well, though a few say it needs air and a minute to settle.

Very good Fiji. However, the alcohol is too present for a better rating.

Sweet on the nose. On the palate, I first thought it would be very alcoholic. But it wasn't as intense as the first second made me think.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A beautiful expression of the Fiji Islands. The nose starts timidly with earthy notes, before giving way to an explosion of overripe exotic fruit, phenolic aromas (glue, solvents) of lime, as well as spicy notes and particularly heavy crème au caramel. There's also a touch of smokiness, which offsets the heavy sweetness in the nostrils. The funkiness is back, but fresher and more subtle than in Jamaica. The attack on the palate is gripping, covered by the acidity of the tropical fruit and citrus, and the warmth of the spicy, smoky flavors that embalm the palate. It's a little hard, but the fruit adds a nice roundness all the same. The flavors are fairly well balanced. The alcohol could be a little better integrated. The long finish is warm, bitter and astringent, with some barrel notes, exotic fruit, phenolic and smoky notes, but gains earthy, herbaceous notes and sweetness as it goes on. A beautiful bottle that demonstrates the undeniable expertise of this region of the world, too often overlooked.

on the nose brutally sour funky currant / strawberry cream vanilla cake... really cool! 🍓💥🍰in the taste then clearly smokier, metallic acting with light pineapple and bitter orange / grapefruit notes, as well as a lot of nail polish, glue and recalls nice acidity. in the finish it goes then more towards cocoa, dark chocolate, smoke and then comes again metal and glue around the corner. if the fruit notes on the nose would prevail in the taste a little more, he would be perfect for me. so overall but for me a little too metallic and bitter in the finish...

RumX Community Tasting Fiji 2001. Incense, vanilla, caramel, cedar, orange, vegetal and yellow fruit. The palate is a little disappointing compared to the nose. The alcohol is a little too present, and the toffee is marked. The finish is long, one-dimensional and caramelized. An unbalanced rum with little fruit, the barrel is too burnt, not to my taste.
Review by Tschusikowsky
It's been a long time since the last tasting. I still really like this one, but no longer at a 9. Nice complexity and long finish. The mouthfeel drops off a bit. Classic vintage markers. Alcohol is present and powerful.

RumX Fiji Crosstasting April 2024 Rank 5/8 Clearly more glue and solvents present. The bottling feels more alcoholic and overall meaner. Solid mid-field in the blind tasting. Compared to the other RA in the set, much less herbal notes found.

Here you get a lot for your money. Intense and lightly fruity with a roasted note on the profile, which I really like.

Fiji 2001 Community Tasting – big thanks to Jakob for organizing this blind tasting. A great vintage and a comparison not without surprises. The bottom of the pack for me were the two Rum Artesanal, both of which I didn't finish. Particularly disturbing was an unpleasant juniper off-note (strongly pronounced in rx15398, somewhat better but still disturbing in rx7779). Then for me the actual bottom (so very good / with the right markers), but just not as great as the others, was Rum Cask rx479. Surprisingly, the next place for me was Isla del Ron, which already has a small reference status in my heart since I tried it. But in the blind test it was overtaken by the delicious Whisky Jury (rx13025) and then by the sensational Cave Guildive (rx1717). The Cave Guildive represents for me the winner of the classic Fiji 2002 profile and is really top. I rated higher only the Flag LMDW Antipodes (rx13440) ... this one is clearly woodier but also ultra delicious. It was also clearly recognizable blind and made the photo finish just millimeters behind the Plantation rx11133, which probably stood out because it was so un-Fiji2001 and has a great glue-caramel Guyana nose. Conclusion: Typical Fiji winners are the Cave Guildive on the fruity-honey-feelgood side and the Flag on the woody side. The Plantation is the wildcard winner. The two RA bottlings are the ones that remain far below the level of the other two.

RumX Fidji 2001 Cross Tasting: Very nice representation of the Fidji 2001 profile. Well balanced between dirt, honey and some fruits. Alcohol integration could be a bit nicer, however. Ranked solidly in the middle of the pack for me. Cheers to Jakob!

Thanks to Jakob for the chance to enjoy a wide range of the Fiji 2001 releases. Although I had tried some before, the result surprised me again, as my previous favorite ended up last. Although I have to say that due to time constraints I didn't give most of them time to develop. So here is the result from the blind tasting, which differs from the scoring.

one of my highlights 2021 ... incredibly complex Fiji ...PLV Wahnsinni love it

Slightly alcoholic in direct comparison to Isla del Ron. Needs time.

No sense in extensive analysis. Smell reminds me of a nice Jamaican, maybe Worthy Park like. Taste is intense, funky and fruity. Delicious. Enjoy.
Review by Leo Krüper
Fruity, salty, good. Simply a bomb rum.
Review by Lukas Jäger
Surprisingly smooth Fiji rum! Another killer release from RA. Lots of fruity notes, tropical fruit and strawberry cream candies. A good and awesome rum, which is almost unusual for Fiji. Very tasty, although I personally like the taste of the young wild ones from Fiji that dance sour-minerally on the tongue. Still a top release!
Review by Rodolphe
Blind tasting: the nose is fruity, pastry-like. But also a bit smoky. I think of a Worthy Park (despite the smoke that I don't really grasp), but still quite powerful. You can really feel the watts on the nose. On the palate it's a bit violent for me, the little nature. And the smoky side grows stronger. So I don't really think of Jamaica anymore but I wouldn't be able to say for sure. Verdict: Fiji. Ok, I've tasted few but so far these are profiles that don't really suit me 100%.

Wow! Surprisingly round for a Fiji!
Review by Frank
Nose: ABV bites at first, then a strange mix... on one hand fruity (raspberry, papaya and grape) on the other hand vegetal. Reminds of olives or the green of a tomato bush. Becomes increasingly earthy to musty, old tobacco and old newspaper but also some caramel. Has something of Rezina wine. Palate: again old newspaper, somewhat resinous, old tobacco but also lime peel, grape and white wine/sparkling wine or sake. Very dry. Has something of old cigar and oil fumes in a car workshop. Now on the after-tasting much better. Tasty and really interesting.
Review by Alex1981
Good Fiji, but needs time. Rather alcoholic before that, but then a nice aroma around fruity, raostaed notes develops. Still a bit disappointing especially on compariaon with the Isla del Ron which was much better

RumX Community Cross-Tasting "Fiji 2001" (by Jakob): Not as unusual as the other Rum Artesanal in the line-up. Rather the typical Fiji profile, which comes across very well but almost seems a bit boring.
Review by Jakob Mmmmhhh
Ester, but different, somehow awesome! Need to try again, but conclusion today: I'm impressed!
Review by mto75
Fiji on a level unknown to me until now 👍
Review by Thunderbird
A real surprise, on the nose first a strong sour note with lots of esters rises, after some time also dull red berries. On the palate initially tropical fruits, especially papaya, then something sweet and sour... somehow dirty/funky... finally slightly bitter astringent and peppery. The finish is long with papaya and slightly astringent! I need more of this 😊

One of the top 3 Fiji rums ever
Review by CHM
For my taste, a really cool rum, which plays very far up. The previous 2001 bottlings of The Rum Cask I find excellent, the here but actually again ne Schippe drauf. The well-integrated > 60% carries everything. A clear South Pacific profile, matching sweetness, an am light peppery but not at all alcoholic spiciness, independent and complex enough to be exciting. I really hope there are more barrels of this lying around. I personally don't care much for the nose. It actually falls off a bit there in my opinion. Very successful bottling.
Review by Christoph
Fiji Rum on a strawberry trip. Very fruity without becoming too sweet. The alcohol is absolutely excellently integrated. Roasty with some dark chocolate in the finish.
Review by Agricoler
Incredibly delicious Fiji. 😋 Tomler barrel influence with typical glue and tea notes. Also great vanilla notes. Nice chocolate notes and berries on the finish. Unfortunately didn't buy a bottle. It definitely would have been worth it.
Review by tojo
If you give the rum some time, nice sweet fruit notes like strawberry, banana, or mango come through on the nose. On the palate, however, wood/barrel fermented fruits dominate.
Review by Domi Mal
Nice nose, needs a bit to open up. Fruity, papaya, sour, rubber, esters, tropical fruits and again sweet - simply great! Very creamy on the palate, fruity sweet but not too much, the dirty hints of rubber are noticeably tasted. A bit funky, sour, damn versatile and super round. A really great barrel was chosen here! Even if some say this Fiji has too few edges and corners and goes in the Barbados direction, one must still acknowledge the high quality! Cross Tasting RA Fiji 2001 - 04/21 - 62.8% - 89 points Isla del Ron 2001/2020 - 57.2% - 92 points Plantation Fiji 2001/2020 - 65.4% - 91 points

Simply the non plus ultra when it comes to Fiji. The nose first restrained but great mix of fruit, esters and roasted flavors. On the palate incredibly balanced and the finish dry and astringent. Simply mega. Love it. Good that I have some in stock here 🙈
Review by Tobin
Mega, you can feel the aging. Not as over the top as other rums from the distillery! Balanced fruity on the nose and taste. The dry finish of dark chocolate almost reminds me of Enmore!

Cross-tasting with Jakob and some forum members on 04/25/2024. 4th place... Great Fiji, with perfectly integrated alcohol. Unfortunately, I didn't note more... probably too much Fiji last night :/)
Review by Wernie
Amazing how much the taste of rum can depend on the situation. Now, afternoon 2:00 pm, both bottlings overwhelm me. 🙈 Although I like the nose of the 21-year-old much better, nice caramel sweet notes and nicely fruity. Taste-wise it is quite spicy and woody and the alcohol noticeably present. Later in the day I was more convinced by both.
Review by Schnubbii
Initially a somewhat metallic note on the nose. On the palate then very nice and intense on the attack, with lots of fruit, some vanilla and little plastic. Harmonious, but for me only moderately complex. Still also a nice Fiji representative.
Review by Jonas Köhler
Quite sharp, but not intense enough.
Review by Gil Firth
Loved this sample. Gotta love this distillery. The price is a complete joke. So cheap. Not the most funky fiji but fruity. Dirty. Ester. Pretty balanced. Very good for the price. Buy טעימה לא הפיגי הכי קיצוני שיש. אבל רמה גבוהה במחיר ממש מצחיק. חמצמץ. קצת עשן מסריחוני כזה. עץ. מתוק. קנייה מבחינתי.
Review by Morgan Garet
On the nose, the smoky side is dominant but absolutely not unpleasant, behind that, the fruits and vanilla come through. On the palate, it's indulgent, fruity, spicy and all very balanced. Caramel in the background until the finish. Long finish, just as complex as indulgent.
Review by Caroni.Martin
Great Fiji rum, nicely dirty but a bit too intense for me - ends up too metallic for me - grateful for the sample but wouldn’t need a bottle.
Review by Basti
On the nose initially a bit musty, which settled over time and drifted more towards glue and fruity notes. On the palate then relatively dry, slightly peaty, bitter and tropical fruits.
Review by Gregor
Nose: somewhat metallic, slightly sharp, grain alcohol Palate: first sweet, hazelnut, oats, apple and pear, alcohol well integrated
Review by Pierangelo Pianta
Sweet attack, wood and biscuit, green tea comes out in the empty glass in the more vegetal and woody part, wow!
Review by John Coffey
I didn't find a great nose despite a very explosive palate!!

A great rum from Fiji with very own flavors and many esters. Pronounced aroma of strawberry cream candy with a very fine sweetness and creaminess.
Expert review by The Dunder Hut
Still an absolute knockout. Too bad that here the exception upwards is rather rare...
