You'd never guess this is Barbados — it drinks more like a fine old whisky than any Bajan rum you know. Intense honey and beeswax lead, wrapped in soft smoke, mango and papaya, with a medicinal, waxy edge and pine resin underneath. At nearly 35 years the alcohol vanishes completely; body's oily and creamy. Tasters keep calling it a honey monster, and mean it as high praise.

Head-to-head with the Silver Seal and for me a nose ahead - although this can turn out the other way around at the next comparison. Here, too, smoke, honey, fresh fruitiness, plus green notes - the all-round pampering program for aficionados, which makes every tasting a star hour of rum. Always a pleasure!

First of all, I am and probably will never be a fan of this Rockleys in this life. I have to admit that these bottlings do have a certain aroma spectrum, but because of the smoky note, it's just not my thing, it reminds me too much of whisky that I simply don't like.

by far the most complex of the 8 1986 Rockleys I know. incredibly creamy, drinkable & harmonious. For me, on a par with the silver Seal, even if it is stylistically somewhat different. but this combination of mango, papaya, allspice, olives, vanilla and fresh acacia honey with creme brulee, sandalwood and tonka/vanilla is simply gigantic! Hammer! absolutely brilliant stuff, chapeau to RA, you delivered great cinema here back then!🙏🇧🇧💥💣

Benchmark Rockley! ❤️A liquid dream!Compared to the SS, Nobilis and Plantation, it has both the best nose and the best palate. Very nice roundness, alcohol top integrated, some smoke, but overall a honey monster!

What a grenade ... words fail me ! A rum for the whole evening ... enjoyment and amazement in the glass! Incredibly complex mango, papaya and honey with a hint of smoke. One of the best bottlings from the master Dominik Marwede... too bad that this chapter is over.

Want one of the world's best rums? For me, this one fits that in many ways, even objectively. Because what the perfectly selected barrel has done with the rum in almost 35 perfect years is simply madness and definitely liquid gold. After about three quarters of an hour, you get presented here in the form of intense honey, beeswax, pine needles, resin, mango, vanilla and smoke Rockley essence... and that in its most intense form. Not a hint of alcohol touches this outstanding aroma package. On the palate unbelievably oily, sweet, velvety, warm and not a trace of alcohol. The only thing that keeps me from 100 points here is maybe 4% too little ABV and that the world's best PMs in my taste are a bit more complete.

This rum is almost surreal. The alcohol is so well integrated here that you can fully immerse yourself in a relaxed aromatic journey through a flower meadow, a forest, and a plantation with tropical fruits.

Rockley Tasting 1986/87/2000 Absolutely magnificent Rockley. Pleasantly balanced and elegant. On the nose wax, herbs and dried fruit. On the palate creamy with honey, vanilla and a subtle saltiness. Feels mature and calm, without losing tension.

the RA 86 in comparison with the Nobilis 86. Both with that unique herbal, medicinal, floral, smoky-honey note on the nose. The Nobilis still has orange peel. The RA seems a bit more edgy or expressive, even though the Nobilis is slightly higher in ABV. On the palate, both toasted cask, grapefruit.

9,3:On the nose, balanced, yet complex with flowery, herbaceous, minty, grassy molasses, mineral, sweet with honey, toasted, smoky wood with caramel, pastry, spicy with allspice, orange peel, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, tropical fruits are out, really overripe, pungent, medicinal notes like wax, rubber, burnt, dark chocolate and biscuits, vanilla, as the molasses is dark with black tea. 9,3:On the palate, the attack is again balanced, yet complex with flowery, minty molasses, sweet with honey, vegetal with briny olive, medicinal, waxy, the rubber is burnt, the wood roasted with pastry, smoky, spicy with anise, allspice, smoky, as the fruits are fermented, slightly rotten, pungent with banana, mango, citrus snd green fruits. 9,2:The finish is long, dry&tannic, intense, with burnt, smoky, spicy roasted wood, medicinal notes, pairing vegetal molasses, sweet with honey and tropical fruits. Sweet vanilla, floral woody on tongue that I have tasted never before EDIT: soo technical and fruity on nose. Glue, peaches, flowers, vanilla, wood on tounge. And sooo fresh! This one is the best WIRD 86 among all I have tasted.

Online tasting from Rum Depot: Brutally good stuff that is difficult to describe. In particular, the nose is so horny and complex that I digressed again and again while sniffing and did not get what Dominik Marwede actually tells. Even the finish develops first and becomes more intense. A rum with a great name, which he rightly carries!

At first slightly smoky, subtly sweet, also a bit earthy. White pepper, ginger, creamy, medicinal, yellow fruits and of course honey and smoke. Alcohol not noticeable. Very long finish, though not super powerful, very elegant. Needs time in the glass. Overall it falls a bit short of my expectations… also compared to other top-notch ones tasted today.

Rum X: Rockley 1986 community crosstasting notes. On the nose: Fresh, Honey/honeycomb notes mixed with medicinal/rubber/max notes. Smoky. Then you get citrus notes and spicy notes. Complex. Balanced. Taste: Warm and sweet mouthfell at first. Honey notes followed by woody, smoky and spicy notes. Vanilla. Balanced and complex. Abv is integrated very well. Finish: Smoky, barrel notes. Dry. Then you get little bit of olive notes. Medium-long finish. Out of all 4 samples in the crosstasting, this one had the strongest notes of that typical Rockley style honey notes. Great rum, i really enjoyed sipping this sample. Its just not the style of rum that i personally really enjoy the most, so thats why i scored it a little bit lower than it should.

Not at all recognizable as Barbados on the nose. You can taste that it has been matured continentally. The nose is very complex. I don't know many others that have so much to offer. Very floral, soft and elegant in the mouth. Finishes slightly sweet with some saltwater olive and young wood. Would love to try one that has been tropically matured.

Small 86er Rockley X-Tasting: what more can you say after the other comments!? This rum is really fun from nose to finish! As one of the few rums, it manages not to let the slightly medicinal note come across negatively. The finish lingers forever.

Pretty much perfect. One of the very best rums I could taste to date. A bit more medicinal in the nose than I'm used to from Barbados. Alcohol is perfectly integrated. The whole thing is extremely well balanced.

So, now it's his turn, the highly praised RA Rockley. Rightly so? Yes! Already with the first sniff, the full range of sweet fruits comes at you: lychee, orange, mango, all kinds of yellow fruits. Also great notes of honey and beeswax. Pleasant woody notes. On the palate, a similarly good impression. Tropical fruits, mirabelle plums, coffee, spices. Also here a pleasant sweetness with honey and beeswax. Small downside: the finish is rather short. Thanks also to Oliver for the 30DoR sample! 👍

Pavel Špaček declared that this is the best rum I have at home. Well, definitely in the TOP 3. Brutally complex nose. On the palate tea notes, honey, a hint of smoke. Really one of the best Rockleys I have tasted so far.

Cadenhead‘s 18y @46%: while the low ABV becomes very apparent side-by-side with the FP bottlings, this bottling can comfortably stand on its own. This delivers the Rockley profile with a lot of complexity and intensity as well. On the nose this is much more approachable, yet intense. On the palate it does lose a bit based on the dilution but the Cadenhead‘s is a good way to experience this style of rum in an easy going way overall. Rendsburger 18y FP: Very intense and more lively compared to its older brothers. While the high ABV provides an excellent oily texture and complexity on the palate, it is a bit sharp on the nose. Here the profile is still very nice, but a bit too alcohol forwards for an even higher score. Silver Seal 33y FP: on the nose this one leaves a rather closed up impression (comparatively). While I get all Rockley markers, the SS somewhat lacks intensity. Much more intensity on the palate! Compared to the 18y (obviously) much more mature with additional wood and depth. Excellent! Rum Artesanal & Nobilis 34y FP: now this is top notch territory! Rich, intense and complex both on the nose and palate. On the nose the Nobilis has a hint more fruits, while the RA has some additional candied herbs. On the palate the RA comes with a bit more wood as well as sweetness, while the Nobilis again feels more fruity and a bit „lighter“. Today the RA takes the crown for me, but this might as well be the other way round in the next session.

Super hard to rate because of the price: Super unique "fine" for a rum, almost like a very old Speyside, great honey and forest aromas I've never noticed in rum before. Super relaxed and yet exceptionally exciting. If I had gotten it back then at the release price, I would say 90+ for the novelty and finesse. But: the profile is not my favorite. It's just not as expressive as others. The story around the Rockley Still is also a lot of BS. And the price of 2k today for 0.5l... well :) So let's try a fair rating. I see it at a strong 88-89; great for a relaxed mood. But I'd also prefer a Glen Garioch in ex-bourbon, almost even more because it has additional nutty notes.

Thanks to FischeJ, I get to try both Rockley from 1986, the RA and the Nobilis. Wow! What a beautiful rum, full of character! It's probably my favorite Barbados rum ever, it's so different than what I'm used to in Barbados. Beautiful combination of fruits (mainly tropical ones), smoke and honey-like caramel.

Rockley cross-tasting with Jakob. Nose is finely smoky, lots of fruit especially citrus fruits and honey. On the mouth also citrus fruits with slight sharpness/pepper? Slightly smoky. Finish is not as long as the other two, so rather medium length. Overall very balanced and tasty. My personal number 3 in the participant field.

RumX Cross Tasting 24-10-2025: WIRD Rockley 1986 by Jakob. Thanks to Jakob for the chance! I added a "leftover sample" of Plantation Extreme No. 5. I like it a bit better than the Nobilis, but it doesn't reach the top. I still find the nose great, but something is missing on the palate. I notice that I rated all 1986 Rockleys below the community average today. Probably not my favorite profile, even if I find it interesting and exciting. Retasting with Zabo: I stick to my overall rating, even though I like the nose even more today.

The nose is magnificent, sweet, smoky, delicate with some pineapple, rubber, wood and some ester notes. The palate is warm, intense and enveloping, with smoky notes, ripe tropical fruit, esters, some wood and a faint background note of honey. On the finish some savory notes and in the empty glass roasted, esters and ripe fruit. Absolutely round and complex, abv more than perfectly integrated. What a gem, thanks to Johannes for the opportunity! The rating ranges from 91-92

Second cross tasing of the Rockley‘s 1986. This one is definitely number on with the most intense and complex nose. They all lose out on the palate which is much mor subtle compared to the nose. Abv very well integrated. A warm, balanced and very fruity rum.

Excellent rum, mature and refined in the glass, it needs to be given 30-40 minutes. The aroma is less sweet, but in the taste you can feel the mentioned honey, tropical fruit, and anise. The finish has a gentle smokiness together with the barrel. Slight disappointment that the finish wasn't longer, otherwise excellent.
