Made for people already deep into Hampden funk, this 1989 HGML is a fermented-fruit bomb of pineapple, banana, glue and cookie dough with a smoky, roasted edge. At nearly 68% the alcohol is remarkably well tucked away — several tasters call it the best Hampden they've had. A few find it milder and more "gentleman" than wild tropical Hampdens, and the finish turns grassy and lightly bitter.

Enormously expressive Hampden with impressive depth and balance. On the nose, ripe tropical fruits, vanilla, glue, and spicy wood. On the palate, intense but harmonious, with perfectly integrated alcohol and a complex combination of fruit, spice, and fine ester sharpness. Even though I've since tried even stronger Hampdens, this bottling clearly belongs to the top tier for me.

Sampling this one right now and I have to admit that it's one of the most well balanced rums I have ever tried when it comes to ABV integration. Very fruity and lovely funk from nose to finish. There is a slight roasting note on the finish that I like a lot. Wonderful rum that is virtually impossible to get. Put my nose in the glass today and the smoke is very strong today :-)

Very nice Hampden. The typical markers with fully ripe pineapple and lime concentrate with banana, papaya, and mango into an exquisite fruit medley. Added to this is a perfectly balanced sweetness of vanilla pastry, caramel, and marzipan, which together with the cask influence and spice notes ensures an absolutely rounded enjoyment. The release also deserves extra points for the alcohol integration, which is truly impressive. This is absolute Hampden top class.

Absolutely top! Sensational. The essence of a Hampden. Hard to beat for me. Extremely harmonious and at the same time diverse. Everything you want: bold aromas, top alcohol integration. Consistent from the nose through the palate to the finish. Simply good. Confirmed again today on the retasting. Exactly my taste.

For 100 points, the only thing missing is the impossible: to integrate the alcohol even better while preserving the "flavor bomb" in all its complexity. Best of Hampden! Tip: Tastes even better from a large red wine glass than in a "normal" tasting glass.

For my tasting note number 500, I chose a very special sample to match my vintage. And this one is a great rum and for me the best Hampden so far 🤤🤤🤤😎😎 So much funk, ester, pineapples, glue. Soo delicious😎 The alcohol is integrated well😎😎

Absolutely brilliant ... but also very intense. If I take the Habitation Velier as a reference, then I would guess blind even between HGML and C<>H.The 2010 HGML is more quaffable and more sweet pastry / marzipan, the 2010 C<>H is overripe and more acidic.I find the here very exciting, very round, also rounder and with more interesting wood notes that impose themselves but not at all. This is still full Hampden fruit basket.A little I miss the sweetness and pastry of the 2010 HGML but still. Perhaps still the best Hampden.And yes, I will still taste it in May Tai despite secondary market price.

so good, in these aroma and ester bomb(HGML, C<>H…), this one has the most impressive balance. Alcohol integrate very well. Especially, the finish is very very long among several HDs of RA so that I can get a lot of things from it. Just little too much bitter and astringency. kind of dull compared with C<>H.

ABSOLUTE BANGER!💥🇯🇲😍 The nose and taste are very close together: an absolute explosion: raw cookie dough, baked goods in general, plus flambéed pineapple, fermented banana, subtly roasted nuts and marzipan, vanilla seeds, buttercream... in the finish, the longer you enjoy the rum, you get subtle bacon, maple syrup, and a very pleasant tannin structure. Tasted together with the Old Brothers 2001. The OB goes more in the direction of sherry/vinegar on the nose. The RA, on the other hand, offers the full load of fermented tropical fruits and gluten, that paired with butter croissant and cookie dough🤪 On the palate, vinegar and smoky bacon are very pronounced in both. The very long finish is dominated by wood and toasty aromas, even leaning towards Caroni's workshop in the case of the OB.

What a bomb! The full high-ester load, glue, coconut, pineapple and other tropical fruits. Slightly burnt on the nose (no smoke like from other bottlings), on the palate a bit of cookie dough, at the back even a bit herbal. Hampden essence that only a few peers find on the same level and that doesn't leave memory (and taste) quickly!

Nose: typical Hampden. Intense, delicious, esters to the bone with a slight vinegar and foot-sweat note and fine glue. Overripe, fermented pineapple and banana and a hint of lime. There is also a pleasant honey sweetness.Palate: Wow! Astringent, then esters right away, going a bit umami. Kind of toasty, bacony as a result. Pineapple right up front, then a tart sweetness from maple syrup. A subtle marzipan note comes.Crazy long finish, getting a bit grassy.Very very good High Ester HD!

Phew! What a beast in the glass. First of all, many thanks to Sönke for letting me try this amazing rum today. Probably the best Hampden I've had in the glass so far. On the nose, the full, fermented tropical fruit basket. Glue, funk. Very intense without being over the top. On the palate, additionally cookie dough, marzipan, and a butcher shop, soapstone note. Long, complex, and intense finish.

In the nose the full blast ester! Fermented pineapple and overripe tropical fruits...On the palate, despite the high alcohol content surprisingly mild! Creamy it spreads in the mouth! The esters and roasted pineapple predominate here too! After some time also joins some sweetness.The finish is extremely long.... A real experience!!!!

More and more it becomes apparent that I High Ester Hampden in combination with relatively crass tropical or continental maturation, do not really want to like. Especially in the nose, bother me the blatant varnish and glue notes, in combination with the classic, strongly fermented fruit pot. This is on the one hand already very horny and wants me somehow quite like, on the other hand but somehow not, because it is simply also very demanding. With a rating I do me very difficult from a qualitative point of view, however, he has Ü90 points well deserved

Nice, fruity and integrated profile. Just too mild taste, not extravagant like I love from Hampden. I preffer DOK :) .. Hampden, legendarni jamajska destilerka, ktera krome rumu produkuje take alkohol do parfemu. Ve vsech rumech z teto destilerky ucitite divoke estery, po kterych cely vas organizmus nasakne vuni zluteho tropickeho ovoce - manga, papaji, anansu, broskvi. I hesitated for a long time in view of the sadness when the 2cl are empty, but at some point the genie has to come out of the bottle.😉 Hampden High Ester in top form!!! It's enough just to have the nose in the glass, awesome😍! An intense fruit bomb and a blob of cookie dough at the back 😋. The palate then adds roasted, bacon and wood flavors. Alcohol is perfectly integrated. Thank you for letting me try this first-class distillate.👍🏻

The nose is very pungent and intense with notes of solvent/polymer resin and citrus. On the palate it is full-bodied and less pungent than on the nose, with hints of roasted, solvent, fermented tropical fruit, funky and a little sweet note; very long finish peppery, citrusy and slightly roasted/roasted(porchetta). In the empty glass always roasted, esters and aged cheese. I'm not a fan of Jamaicans, but it's really a bomb.

The rum is very balanced, a "gentleman" of the Hampdens. However, in comparison to the better Habitation Velier Hampdens, I have to rate this rum a bit less (9.3 points). So, I compared it directly (head-to-head) to some other continentally and to tropically matured rums. So, for instance with the HV HLCF 2010/2016(68,5% ABV). This HLCF was my personal benchmark and I personally rate it with 9.5 points (Nobilis No.2 even higher now).This HLCF is extremely full bodied, with dark intensive fruit and it is very dark, deep and complex. This is an evidence for me, that 6 years of pure tropical ageing can produce such deep taste monsters, while the continental Hampdens of 30 years of age are mild elegant gentlemen. So, they are completely different "animals" than the tropically aged Habitation Veliers. For me just another family or kind of rum. And the extreme angel share after only 6 years proves, that massive cask interaction is taking place during tropical ageing. But this is well known and understood. But that short tropical ageing makes some Hampdens so wild and explosive. For me, the best of the tropical ones cannot be matched by the best of the continental ones, as they are too mild for me and thus less exciting but this is only me and my personal preference. Your mileage may vary, of course! ;-) For the area of "mild gentleman taste" I prefer excellent Scotch single malt whiskies, and for wild funky styles I prefer tropically aged Hampdens, Long Ponds or New Yarmouths. But back to the HGML 1989 by Artesanal/Heinz Eggert: As already mentioned, it is very polite, balanced and mild. The alcohol is very well integrated. Besides the typical fruity notes by Hampden (but less fruity than the HV HLCF 2010), we have spicy aromas/flavours in the nose and the palate. We also have grassy flavours, like from hey as we also know them from Worthy Park. I personally prefer Hampdens without spicy flavours, I like fruity Hampden styles without these other flavours, but again this is my personal preference, only (my 2 cents, only!) which shows me that the ratings here are kind of meaningless. IMHO it is much more a question of personal taste and preferences.

Unquestionably very good and excellent rum ... only unfortunately for me personally not my case... the first minutes in the glass already very rich, but too much Pritt stick.After about 30min already much rounder and nicer: railroad track and technology museum in the nose and on the palate in the best sense.
