One taster called it "the best very old Hampden" they'd had, and the reviews back that up. Thirty years of continental aging tamed the funk into overripe pineapple, papaya, glue, marzipan and a creamy honey sweetness, with just enough oak and anise. Several note the alcohol sits perfectly integrated for 57.8%. A few say fruit fades in some samples, but most call it wonderfully round.

I think Hampden can store forever! Beautifully round.Nose: of course esters and glue without end. A pleasant vinegar note, acidity of fermented pineapple and a caramel-honey sweetness behind it. Compared to a young C<>H more caramelly, fruity and full.Palate: wow! It's got me! But so much so! Full-bodied, complex, round! Pineapple, esters, papaya, acidity, sweetness and caramel. And then a light, nice umami note. Pleasant anise and marzipan to it and the perfect HD stands there. Sure, the flavors are very similar to young and other HDs, but here it comes down to subtleties

Little 1990 C<>H cross-tasting with 2x RA, RC Ed. 5, TWJ and TRC. Honestly, quite hard for me to chose a winner out of the TRC, first RA and first RC… The first RA also is an outstanding bottling of the 1990 vintage. Side-by-side the RA comes with a little twist towards more herbal notes and little less fruity notes. Also very good staff.

Wonderful Hampden, very fruity and light. Exactly matches my taste! Update Feb. 2024 The renewed sample reflects the same feedback. I should have grabbed this one. Alcohol, fruit, spice, and wood are perfectly balanced here.

Great Hampden... nicely creamy oily in the mouth. Alcohol extremely well integrated and never really disturbing. Nice fruity with pineapple, papaya and mango, not too woody despite the age... You can really feel the ester level but the funk is clearly tamed by the age. Unfortunately a bit flat in the Mai Tai ...🥲

Rum Artesanal: Wow, everything you love about hampden or Jamaica rum in an absolutely intense, creamy and complex style. This is an absolute masterpiece. You shouldn't expect an astringent Jamaican funk here... Very pleasant on the palate, you might want to preserve it for hours. Whisky Jury: Rather spicier on the nose and more complex overall. Definitely the winner for me in this category. On the palate and in the finish, it clearly lags behind its rival. Much wilder and more astringent, but less complex. Two totally outstanding rums that both have their raison d'être and are not in direct competition for me after tasting. The RA and incredibly complex, creamy, intense on the palate without becoming astringent. The Whisky Jury is much wilder, more astringent and yet complex, but is nowhere near the fruity pleasantness of the RA.

Long, heavy, expressive... great balance of fruits, wood influences, and spices. Plus a distinctive and deep, but by no means overwhelming sweetness. Very impressive and an outstanding representative even in the overall strong 1990 vintage.

Similar profile to the 1993 version. I found this one has less glue notes and the barrel come through a bit more. In addition i found some tastes of anise. Price to value is very good. My personal result: 90>93

Continental Jamaicans are generally not really my thing, and I prefer tropical aging – even for Jamaica. But this one is really tasty. I think off the top of my head it’s one of the best I’ve tried. Great fruit with matching wood and spice influence.

04.09.2022 Meeting up for a nice after event party at my hotel. Good rum and food spread over a full day. Nose Intense, light roasted wood, fruity, light marzipan, glue, light caramel. Palate Medium intense, oily, light roasted wood, faint smoke, fruity, light marzipan, light medicinal. Finish Very long and warm, light wood, light smoke, fruits.

For me, an almost perfect Hampden - great expression of tropical fruits like pineapple, banana, and papaya. Ester and wood stay in the background. Nicely buttery on the palate. Alcohol really perfectly integrated! Edit: after a few months, another +1. This 90s Hampden is simply breathtakingly good!

Damn that is very tasty. Very fruity, slightly acidic and sweet after marzipan and almond must with honey banana and lime cordial. Neat ester but not too much, light anise and smoke notes. The acidity remains at the end really intense hang and becomes very astringent, which gives him 2-3 points deduction for me, also the finish could be a little longer and more intense... Nevertheless, top stuff!

Tropical fruits, overripe pineapple, esters, glue, and lots of wood. The entry on the palate is rather soft even though the aromas are well present; they build up quite quickly. The fermented fruit side with cedar wood dominates the palate. But in the background, other aromas reveal themselves: butter and pastries, vanilla. The finish is moderately long and the aromas balance beautifully. A rum much more complex than it seems.

What a board. Hampden 1990 seems to taste yes already by the name, if he has flowed through the hands of a D.M., he can probably only get better ;-)Incredibly tasty, round, complex and at the same time pleasant C<>H. If you want to describe it purely in terms of aromas, it probably sets itself apart from others only a little. The secret of this rum is the balance of flavors and their interplay. Must be tasted to understand. I am thrilled. A cross comparison with the '89 and other '90 Hampden will be exciting. Perhaps again: The king is dead, long live the king?

Tasted with my Hampden reference, the Flens JMC 2007, the RA is incredibly round for a C<>H. Not just fermented fruit on the nose, but spices like anise and allspice, some prune and caramel too, and a smoky cask note. The Flens Ester-Kreissäge, on the other hand, has the full sour yoghurt cookie program 🤪 That remains the measure of all things for me.

A great Hampden with a dreamy nose. You don't want to stop smelling it. Fruit basket, lots of esters, simply brilliant. 1990 was a strong vintage per se, this representative doesn't need to hide.

Just wow 🤩 It wasn’t planned, dad found a sample hidden in a corner. The best very old Hampden I’ve tasted to date. Lots of intensity, concentration and complexity in 1cl. 👃 Roasted, grilled, buttery pineapple. Overripe tropical fruits on a calm funk slowly aged. Beautiful esters aged 30 years on the continent expressing in aromas of elementary school glue 🤯 I also have the characteristic smell of beeswax my mother used for her precious wood furniture. Childhood flashback, this is a very high-level rum. Fresh, peppery and vanilla spices complete this constantly evolving nose. 😋 It’s pastry-like on lemon tart covered with meringue, almond cookie dough, small tropical fruit cubes with pineapple dominant. Creamy honey with tastes of almonds and nougat 🤤 I have another more esterified side on black and green olives, iodized notes, fresh fish delivered in wooden crates on the docks, the strong smell of decomposing seaweed on the rocks. A trace of old boat engine fuel mixed with seawater... A journey. We are on flavors that show great maturity and elegance. ⛳ Long, evolving, ripe. From burnt wood smoke and crustacean carcasses to red peppers, guided by brine and the harshness of green bananas. I need a bottle 🥰

Just when I thought that it wouldn’t get any better this evening after sampling RX328 this one comes around. Everything that I like in a Hampden is to be found in this one, but the flavors are much more complex and subtle, not as unpolished or rather in your face than most of the younger Hampden’s that are around lately.

18-07-2025 - Rate 9.4 31-01-2026 - Rate 9.2 Got this special treat at an unnamed tasting. Got 3 extra treats at the finish. First one was this amazing Hampden. Nose of tropical fruit, glue, marzipan and caramel. Palate follows the nose close. Long finish dominated by tropical fruits, wood and glue.

Update: much more fruits in the re-tasting, upping the points a bit. Great stuff! Great rum with all the typical Hampden notes, but dialed back a bit. Instead the wood comes through more prominent with spicy notes as expected after the long time. Missing a bit the fruitiness that is mentioned in the other reviews, might be my sample.

A very interesting Hampden bottling, especially thanks to the choice of reduction, which makes it highly approachable without sacrificing aromatic depth or complexity. The trade-off is that the rum is inevitably less funky and expressive, costing it a few points on the overall score. Nevertheless, I would say it is a very good rum for introducing people to continentally aged Hampdens 🔥

The golden rule of Jamaica. When C<>H meets a 1993 vintage or older, it's very likely to be great. And also expensive. This piece is full of fruit, glue, and mellowed esters. A beautiful old piece.

Today two Gop bottlings from Hampden, both of which I hadn't had in the glass yet, RX7787 and RX26141. Both great on the nose, the Artesanal fruitier and sweeter, the Virtues with more glue and solvent. Although with the Artesanal the glue notes also come with time. I like the Artesanal better.

Parallel tasting of: - RX271: RumClub 26 y.o. - RX8041: TRC 30 y.o. - RX7787: RA 30 y.o. - RX11796: SdR 31 y.o. - RX15404: RA 33 y.o. There is no bad rum from this vintage, yet noticeable differences can be seen in comparison. For me, RumClub and TRC have the edge today, both are complex and fantastically balanced, RumClub with a bit more power and depth, TRC with perfectly integrated alcohol. The younger RA is also excellent, but alcohol integration is slightly worse, so 1 point deduction. SdR has perfectly integrated alcohol but is a bit weaker in depth and sharpness, plus the finish is less complex and interesting. The older RA is a bit flatter, so last place today.

Whoa... This is fun. Overall very round and complex. On the nose lots of fruit and some herbs. The sweetness is more defined. On the palate nicely round and more complex than the TRC 30y. There's a lot going on here. Less barrel, more fruit and some acidity. On the finish the barrel comes with smoky mint and herbs. Absolutely brilliant. The rum has a great progression. This is fun.
