The first thing out of the glass is pencil — graphite and sharpened lead, so vividly that reviewers keep drawing three pencil emojis to describe it. Around that mineral core sit dried thyme, sage, licorice, waxy oak and a little dried apricot and citrus. Oily on the tongue, dry and roasty on a long finish, with barely any of the woodiness you'd expect from 36 years in cask. Singular, and people know it.

Most helpful positive review
A very Enmore nose, old varnished wood with caramel sweetness. Plenty of herbal freshness and graphite. The palate starts gently, then the aromas rise and invade the palate. The same vegetal, caramel and dried fruit notes as on the nose. But, in addition, I discover smokiness. The finish is long, long and all the aromas remain to the end. A very fine rum! The empty glass is marked by very fine flavors and lots of dried fruit.

... Enmore - drive distillery, now only a functional distillation device. Probably the only wooden distillation device in the world that enjoys great popularity. Enmore rums have flavors of ash, leather, heavy wood, which especially delights lovers of smoky whiskies. And if the producer adds a bit of molasses to the rum in the traditional Guyanese way, you have a unique, very strong and heavy rum in the bottle. One of my favorites

Wish you guys a good start in the new year! This is my last rum for this year. I have choosen it, because there are a lot of good rumors. So… it’s a very good rum from guyana with nice notes of thyme and graphite/pencil shaving. Very special. In comparison to the high price per value and the missing WOW effect i’ll give it a good 90 only. Nose: delicious, thyme, graphite, herbal, prunes, citrus, dried fruits, some notes of green apple, iodine, licorice 🤪, woody, almond, roasted, marzipan, cream toffee Mouth: complex, dry, astrigend, oily, full bodied, thyme, graphite, minty, herbal, bitter, tannins, licorice, oak, diluted???? Finish: long, dry, astringend, minty, thyme, herbal, iodine, tannins, roasted, leather, oak(barrel)

A grandiose rum that masters the balance of aromas to perfection. The triptych of herbal and tobacco notes, Demerara's typical woodiness and spiciness, and the fruitier side of the nose complete the picture. The attack on the palate is extremely delicate, with the alcohol very well integrated. The top notes are thyme, tobacco and herbs, followed by spices (licorice, aniseed, allspice), wood, nuts and fruits (citrus, dried, candied and tropical fruits). The honeyed side of the rum incenses the palate. The finish is long, warm and spicy, but is soon overtaken by floral and earthy flavors that are highly aromatic and not at all distracting. A superbly well-preserved rum that's part of the legend.

Best VSG I've had so far. The nose I found still (too) restrained but palate and finish are exquisite. Pencil is really there, but also bitter orange, pickled pears, herbs, citrus. Plus present slightly burnt wood notes that round it all out. The oily texture also fits very well. Top!

Nose: Pencil! A very complex nose with lots of depth. Beautiful oily texture, which is at the same time sweet and concentrated. Pencil, wood, pepper and vanilla marry with mineral notes. It is sweet and bitter at the same time, brilliant. The finish convinces as well. A really great Versailles!

Very intense & authentic note of thyme, salty salmiak/licorice sweets, some pear and bitter orange, leather, lots of bitter substances from burnt wood and light bitter notes like from iodine ointment or when you chew on a pencil... Surprisingly drinkable for 36y old and surprisingly little wood for it. The finish could be a little longer. PLV is out of proportion for me, if the rum cost 200€ less, the ratings would be higher. In general, however, it's not really the flavor profile that appeals to me.

What an extraordinary rum... I've never noticed the mineral pencil note so extremely ... but it's not just this alone that makes this rum... dried fruit and herbs are in harmony, the woody side also comes to the fore! A very complex and intense rum... absolutely top!

I have occasionally wondered what can be meant by pencil notes - now I know. It becomes clear as soon as you pour it into the glass. Herbs and delicate fruity notes. Nice finish. I like it very much.

A rather rare and expensive drop and something very special! Nose: actually pops a pencil lead. Wow. I find dry spices like savory or old oregano as well as candle wax and lovely beeswax. It also has something of old newsprint. Fruit is there, but flat, perhaps dried apricot. Palate: here, too, the first thing is intense pencil, followed by a pleasant wood acidity. Then again these dry spices, thyme, saffron, some mint and also lovage. Cut branches again. Slightly salty and waxy. Totally different and therefore brilliant!

9,2:On the nose, the power of mint and thyme are the first impression we get from this rum, slightly herbaceous, dark with licorice, then citrus, dried fruits and green apple, roasted wood notes like cocoa, nuts, spicy with nutmeg. On aeration, a very round rum is flowery, mineral, fruity with banana, lime, orange, lemon peel and dried apricots, also spicy with vanilla and sweet with Demerara sugar. 9:On the palate, the attack is dark with licorice, umami, roasted wood notes like leather, nuts, caramel, Demerara sugar, peppery, fruity with dried fruits like apricots, figs, prunes, as the molasses is minty, herbal, vegetal with thyme. Resting the rum helps vanilla, tannins and citrus fruits like grapefruit, lemon peel, as the wood is smoky and later the fruits candied. 9,1:The finish is long, dry and tannic, so slightly bitter, oaky, with past notes continuing the journey, joined by berries and tobacco..

A touch of legend. As unique in taste as its vintage. Anyone who likes to stir their herbal tea with pencils will love this bottling. Despite its enormous age, it is not woody, almost harmoniously balanced in its aromas, if it weren't for this beastly pencil note, which is only sufficiently countered by thyme and mint. I find it difficult to rate this bottling because it is so special and, as a unicorn, correspondingly expensive. I would give it more points for quality, but unfortunately it's not my taste. Still, it's a board. You have to try it.

Intense thyme and mint on the nose, plus citrus fruits. A natural caramel sweetness, when drinking you can almost taste the brown sugar crystals. Herbal notes diminish towards the finish. Oily on the tongue, dry on the finish with some iodine and roasted notes. The integration of the alcohol lacks maximum perfection, and the nose promises more than the taste delivers (criticism still at a very high level considering the P/L ratio compared to the 1994 REV and VSG bottlings).

#6132 26.12.2025 Second day after Christmas and my stomach is finally back to normal, more or less. Watching some kind of romantic movie with my wife so now I definitely need a rum or two 🤣 Nose Fresh, fruity, light wood, herbs, light anise, light floral, banana, light plum, pencil shavings. Palate Oily, light wood, naturally sweet, faint tar, mineral, light olive, light salt, apple, light mango, pencil shavings. Finish Long, medium dry, wood, faint honey, mango, faint leather, olive, light salt. Empty glass Olive, light tar, light mint, spice, dried fruit.

Quite complex, but after a 94 REV it felt somehow light, especially on the nose. With a bit more time and swallowing, a lot of intensity comes out with dry herbs, minerality, unripe citrus fruits, and at the end some sweetness is also noticeable. The pencil shavings bother me a bit. Not my favorite of the 94s, but still interesting.

On the nose, initially a fresh herbal note with thyme and green apple, but also prunes and a sweetness reminiscent of cream candy. After some time in the glass, the graphite note, wax and wooden barrel appear. Very spicy on the palate, with allspice and liquorice. The finish is toasty and somewhat dry. Overall at a very high level. An 85 in the glass is certainly something special, but in terms of taste, there are also equal wines from the Versailles still at a more moderate price.

This rum definitely leaves a lasting impression whether positive or negative is simply a matter of taste. It's not my case 100%. Nevertheless an absolutely coherent flavor profile with herbal and mineral tones. Also licorice and some dried fruits are present. On the nose a nice note of green apple.

The rum starts strongly on the nose: I perceive peat and humus, along with herbs and complex spiciness, very subtle dried fruit. You can already sense the dryness. It continues in the mouth: the cask now dominates with wood influences, herbs and pronounced dryness, not a trace of sweetness. The finish brings no surprises: strong herbal, barrel and roasted aromas occupy the tongue and linger for a very long time. A beautifully old and homogeneous Enmore and a great experience!

I waited to try this sample for some time and spontaneously decided to do so today. It's a very special rum. Quite complex but after a 94 REV felt kind of light, especially on the nose. More time and sips however uncover a lot of intensity with dry herbs, minerality, unripe citrus, some sweetness is also felt at the end. I liked it a lot. Thanks JakobM for the sample.

11-07-2026 - Rate 8.8 Second evening in a summer tasting with my mate Anders What a nice rum. All the stats looks great. 36 years, Versailles still and mid 50’s ABV. It’s good but have to much continental aging. Missing a more thick and oily rum.

Getting back to my samples of Guyana rum. This is a very good VSG, it's very much on the side of pencil shavings, herbal and wood, but unlike to the more recent continental aged VSG, this one has more complexity, dried fruits and leather. Alcohol integration is very good, the only thing preventing it to reach higher level is that it could have a longer finale.

A really well-aged Versailles that comes across rich, round, and powerful. It develops slowly in the glass and exudes pleasant aromas of herbs from Tuscany, especially thyme, a bit of rosemary. Along with that, fresh pencil, dried fruits from yellow stone fruit, wood, and light vanilla. Together it creates an almost bacon-like overall picture, very awesome! On the palate and tongue, it is very round, rich, and oily, pleasantly spicy with slightly tart, almost bitter notes of pencil and citrus fruit that remind of licorice. At the very end, light vanilla and sweetness on the tip of the tongue – alcohol is not noticeable at all.

What a nose! An explosion of red fruits and dried fruits and citrus. Warm and very balanced. Totally different then on the palate, with roasty and woody notes dominating. And a bitterness that lasts to the finish. Warm and balanced, but slightly to bitter

Quite a nice Enmore with everything you would expect. But, and that is a big but, it really is not typical in the integration of the herbal notes. They are in a rare and perfect melange that elevates it to something wonderful
