Blind, almost nobody pegged this as Appleton — tasters kept guessing Guyana or Caroni. It's the dirtiest, funkiest of the Hearts run: furniture polish, glue and solvent up front, then dark chocolate, tobacco, leather, bitter orange and roasted coffee. Fruit shows on the nose but the palate leans woody, dry and tannic. Give it plenty of air and a few drops of water.

Direct comparison of 94, 95 and 99: On the nose rather reserved, you have to search for the fruit, mostly citrus (like scouring milk), otherwise rather medicinal. On the palate more mineral and metallic, somehow uneven. Alcohol is rather unruly and the finish is sharp. In my view the worst of the three.

Solvent, polish, glue and dried fruit on the nose. Animalistic. Very complex and very dirty and funky by Appleton standards. I could smell it forever. Lots of wood and liquorice on the palate, very complex. A very long, very nice finish. Great rum, I like it better than the 1999. Edit: In the glass again for a long time. It takes a long time to open up. Definitely the dirtiest and funkiest of the Hearts series and therefore a bit out of line. If EMB 1995/97 is one of your favorites, you've come to the right place.

I have finally found the perfect chocolate to reset and enhance my palate when tasting. I can recommend the 70% chocolate from Peru made from the Chuncho Bean (Trinidad). This bottle is also a really nice one and there is no doubt that it's an Appleton Estate in the nose nor the palate. A great rum probably already sold out. It was gone here in Denmark the day it was released and the bottle prices have already skyrocketed.

RumX Advent calendar 12.12.21: This drop has a sensational nose. You could smell it endlessly. In the mouth, unfortunately, it didn't quite meet my taste. Compared to the series, this was the one I liked the least. Retasting: The mouth falls short compared to the great nose. Alcohol is too present for me, something furry/tannic.

Clearly better than the 99. Nice notes of dark chocolate, toffee, lime, grapefruit marmalade, coffee, not too much wood and some mint and glue. Kind of reminds me of Jaffa cakes on steroids. Only rather with lime/grapefruit instead of orange. Only here again a bit alcoholic and astringent, otherwise the rating would be higher!

I like it very much. I particularly like the slightly dirty note behind the pleasant menthol, cedarwood and tobacco mix. Dried apricot and a few yellow and green fruits.

A dream to be able to try the whole Appleton Hearts range. My conclusion would be that this is a really high-quality range. All in all, they are all classy bottlings. It's personally hard for me to pick a true winner here. Only the 84 falls a bit short. The 02 can't quite keep up either, though that's complaining on a high level. If I had to choose one, it would probably be the 03 because it was the first I tried from the series.

9:On the nose, we get balanced and round first impression with medicinal notes like esters, solvents, tropical fruits like banana, red and citrus fruits, minty molasses and roasted wood notes with dark chocolate, nuts, toffee and leather, slightly spicy. Appleton Hearts cross-tasting with the vintages 2002, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999 (RX15475, RX15474, TBD) 2002: Fruity and spicy with a hint of menthol. On the palate, lots of wood and spices, slightly astringent and bitter, fruit notes very subtle. 1993: Clearly more intense with more spices and more barrel influence, also dirty notes that remind me of TDL or Chairmans. On the palate extremely dry and bitter with a strong barrel impact, slightly burnt. I miss the fruity here. Finish is very long! 1994: Similar to 1993, but more fruit and a distinct mint note. Also on the palate clear parallels, but not quite as bitter and dirty and fruit notes still subtly present. 1999: Lots of wood and spices, with dried fruits and tropical fruits in the background. On the palate plenty of spices and wood, but hardly any fruit notes, and no burnt/bitter notes. 1995: Again dirty aromas with tar, leather and lacquer. Similar to 1993/1994. The woody, bitter aromas also dominate on the palate here. For me: 1994 ->8.8 2002 + 1999 ->8.7 1993 + 1995 ->8.6

Really intense tropical representative from Jamaica! Heavy, lots of barrel, yet fruity and the funk comes through too! At times, especially on the nose, you might guess Demerara – big deal!

Rum Friendly Club, advent calendar, day 20. Tropical fruits and old varnished wood, a fairly simple nose yet devilishly successful. Menthol is very present from the first sip and gives a superb freshness to this 25-year-old rum. The complexity follows with chocolate, cedar wood, tobacco, dried and tropical fruits. The finish is long and all the aromas remain present and balance beautifully. Superb finish!

Compared to the 99er a bit more mature. With the finish, you don't need a cigar anymore. It's already integrated. Only bad that I don't smoke. 😅 But it still pleases very well, definitely a dirtier profile👍 I just miss a bit more distinct fruit notes in the finish. If you give it enough time it gets better and better, so an extra point 😋👌

In direct comparison the 94, 95, and 99. Nose: the 94 in the background with a slight mint/menthol note, the 99 a bit more herbal and in the background apple cider vinegar (maybe also balsamic) and cinnamon stick. The 95 with orange peel and furniture polish, which I also often have in the nose with 96 Caronis. On the palate, however, the 95 is the 'outsider' with very pronounced burnt notes; I like the 94 best here.

Had a sample and needed to pour it next to the 1994. It needs a lot of time to really open up, for a long time the alcohol was overpowering together with menthol . But then the dry and fruity notes start to develop. I enjoyed every little drop until the very end of the long woody bitter-chocolate finish. It was more funky compared to the 1994, but definitely not as funky as a lot of other Jamaicans.

Pleasant nose with a burnt chocolate smell, some fruitiness is there too. On palate however it is quite harsh in terms of alcohol, also goes a bit towards fennel vegetable notes, with some small taste of grapefruit. I compared it directly against 1994 one, and overall the latter one was a more balanced and more enjoyable.

It's been a while I have not tasted an Appleton from Heart Collection. Quite similar to the 1994 vintage. Feels a bit better balanced on the palate with less wood and more round notes. Main drawback is the alcohol integration which is rather poor on the nose. Besides this, very good rum !

RumX Advent calendar, 12/12, blind, First impression: fruity-spicy-sweet Guyana nose and dry-woody-powerful KFM palate. Totally wrong, like with the 94. On the nose similar to the 94, but darker and woodier, spicier, more bitter. Still very fruity with a fine sweetness. Old blood orange with dark, sour blackcurrant, dried apricot, plum, lovely papaya and passion fruit. A bit of vinegar. Very caramelized with dark honey. Dry wood and vanilla. Slightly soapy. Delicious! On the palate strong, woody, spicy, bitter-salty. Some soapy with light lemon balm comes through. Some vanilla with cardamom, pepper and nutmeg. Clearly roasted towards mocha. Blackcurrant at the back. The complexity is impressive, but does it have its own character? A crazy rum!!

Another piece from the Appleton Hearts range. Compared to the older brother 1994, for me it is fruitier and warmer. Still lots of polish, which I would say is typical or at least common for Appleton, and iodine wood, which is present in all older hearts so far.

RumX Advent calendar, 12.12.2021, blind. Wow, what a fruity nose! Very complex, a beautiful fruit basket. A mix of dark and tropical fruits. Slightly sulfured (dried fruits), forest honey, thyme, and licorice. On the palate extremely woody! Holy shit, that's intense, completely different from the nose. Almost no fruit, but wood, wood, wood! Tannins, pepper, a bit roasted. Also a hint of nutmeg, mocha, and leather, after some time also mint. Because of the dark fruits and spicy herbs, I guessed Guyana here. Due to the discrepancy between nose and palate and the enormous woodiness on the palate, I even settled on KFM. Again I was fooled, again an Appleton Hearts. Exciting and great, but I miss the clear distillery character!

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang & Jakob, 2023-07-27 Part 1: This time all Appleton Hearts on deck (1984, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2002 and 2003). For me, the 1994 is still the best of the series, closely followed by the 1993 and 1998. Surprisingly tasty was also the 2002. On the nose, the 1984 is right up front, but falls off on the palate due to too strong a wood influence.

Day 12, 3rd Advent, RumX Advent calendar: And again TDL 2001 or 2002 as the first thought, just a bit fruitier on the nose. Very woody and dry on the palate with mint and black tea on the finish. Alcohol very well integrated. And again I was wrong... Another Jamaican that I wouldn't typically assign there.

Quite dry, woody and astringent. Nevertheless very tasty with aromas of coffee and mocha on the finish, also quite resinous with plenty of tannins. Fruit rather subtle. A nice one, but other Appleton Hearts releases are ahead for me.

On the nose you can clearly feel the >60% wood, caramel, tropical fruits. On the palate, it is very powerful, dominated by wood, caramel and spices. Unfortunately, the quality/price ratio is not there, it's good but not crazy.

On the nose, it's rather heavy. You find liquid glue and solvents... at low levels! Don't get excited, we're still at Appleton. Then bitter orange and dark chocolate. But above all a woody profile (this rum has 25 years of casks). On the palate, you wouldn't imagine it's a 63% rum, it's very well integrated and creamy in the mouth. You find anise, orangette and medicinal touches. It's seriously complex and intense on the palate. I even find a Guyana style in there, close to a PM. The finish is very respectable on bitter tannins. I admit I had heard and read quite a few negative feedbacks on this selection. But for once, I find it rather well done. OK, if you're looking for funk and Jamaican explosion, you're far from it. But if you look for aromatic intensity and complexity, you're at the right door. It allowed us to see a rougher side of this Jamaican distillery traditionally much more consensual. Blind, no one found the Jamaican distillery. You have to say old Appleton BDFs are rare and so we don't know their profiles well. But it was a rather positive surprise at the reveal. Thanks to everyone for your participation and interventions so that this evening was what it was: funny! Indeed, not easy to decide blind and sometimes the ego takes a hit! And a huge thanks to Jordan who gave us the pleasure of sharing an old Genièvre as a bonus to start the festivities which surprised more than one (it's possible to find Jordan's tasting notes on this topic on this page)! I already give you an appointment on Tuesday 07/03/2023 for a lineup from a destination not often honored: Haiti!

It’s almost identical to the 2002 bottling in that the coffee REALLY pops but there are noticeable differences in this one that separates it entirely from this one Nose - different nose from 2002. There’s a spiciness to the nose, combined with the ABV, that can bite if smelled too much or too close. There are notes of tobacco, oak, alcoholic vapours, slight hint of solvents, some dark chocolate, oak barrel and a floral perfume note that also contributes to the nasal sting Palate - STRONG coffee notes. This one is a fully roasted espresso compared to the americano coffee notes from the 2002. There’s a variety of spices like ginger, black pepper but there is also some nuttiness like walnuts and pecans that offer a sweetness that isn’t dominant. If there are fruit notes then the only I can find is a generic dried fruit note you get from Sherry casks but without the Sherry flavour. Like the 2002 bottling, sipping neat can make it run too hot in the palate so again 3-4 drops of water helps calm things down a little and can REALLY help you appreciate that beautiful and complex finish that lingers a while! Those drops of water helps your palate distinguish all the previously mentioned notes dance on your tongue like a symphony! Utterly delightful - reminds me of the Velier Foursquare Patrimonio bottling in the sense that when you drink a Velier version of a rum, you’re almost tasting an old school, no nonsense, traditional rum that “they used to make, back in the good old days” Signor Gargano certainly knows his stuff - I’ve YET to try anything of Velier that hasn’t absolutely blown me away!

The nose of this 95 compared to the 94 takes much longer to open up, after a few minutes the solvent finally gives way to a beautiful fatty woody matter, orange peels, banana, cocoa... lots of indulgence on the program! The pastry profile reminds me a lot of a TDL from the 2000s. On the palate, you can feel the 63°, but our palate is easily seduced, very quickly the woodiness and orange zest take over, much less fatty in the mouth, we find a hint of fresh licorice added. The length in the mouth remains average but a bit more pronounced than the 94, we keep a pleasantly fresh side that lasts.

Nose: I immediately get bananas, plums, a fresh touch of mint..then leather comes through, along with some wood. Not overly sweet on the nose. Spices are coming through after some time (vanilla and also a pungent note, maybe ginger?) Palate: the fruits are the first notes you get, immediately followed by the mint. The leather and the wood are definitely more present here. It is mildly astringent and definitely warm along the throat. Finish: long and warm, there’s some aniseed joining the leather and woody notes.

Really great rum and my favorite just ahead of 94 and clearly ahead of 99. Perfectly balanced on the nose and palate with nice mint. Really good. Not quite as dry and intense as the 94 in the finish. That would make it almost the perfect rum for me. Still just super tasty. Brilliant.

A known distillery, an unkown and uncommon profile. Far from thzme smooth aroma, we navigate between fruity, smoked, vanilla and licorice. Yet, if darker than other Appleton releases, it remains elegant, gracefull and a rum to let express to the best.

I like this Appleton. I don’t love it and coming in at $300+ USD this carries an inane price where the liquid does not match the sticker price. I may be biased but I am far more of a fan of the rums coming out of Worthy Park, Hampden, Clarendon and Long Pond. Tasting notes: mint, black tea, tobacco, leather, almond roca
