Dos Maderas Seleccion
The surprise here is how much sweetness a 42% rum can carry. Column-still, aged 10 years and finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, it pours on vanilla, raisin, caramel and sherry — thick and dessert-like. One taster called it a "little bitter, sweet, creamy rum," and most agree the PX sugar runs the show. Many rate the cheaper 5+5 just as highly, so the family style matters more than the step up.

How does Dos Maderas Seleccion taste?
Aggregated from 143 community reviews.
Very sweet, sherry-soaked dessert sipper Loved by sweet-tooth drinkers, dismissed by others as a sugar bomb. Rich sherry, vanilla and raisin, but the sweetness dominates and the alcohol reads a bit diluted.

What bothers me about this rum is the sweetness which dominates far too much. I'd say the 5+5 is better in comparison. The nose is smoky sherry with barrel to it. The palate is sweet, too sweet in my mind, a bit dry with fruit and spices. The finish is rather short with sticky sweetness and barrel topped with a bot of licorice. Too sweet for me.

Simply far too sweet for my taste and quickly gone in the end.

Revisiting after a year:Lot of sweetness, sugar added; if you don't mind sugar or if you particularly have at some point taste for something sweet, it is a nice sipping rum. Not sure if it is better than its cheaper 5+5.Taste and smell relates to cocoa, dark chocolate,caramel,vanilla,coffee- sort of sweet cappuccino with addition to more fruitines than 5+5.Higher voltage would make this rum even better cause it feels a bit diluted with almost no alcohol in the taste. Both are very similar but this one is even bit more sweet with hints of tuti fruti in the nose and also fruitier in the taste. Sweets/candies in rhe taste. It depends on what you prefer, I would rank them the same they are good if you are in the mood for something really sweet and full flavour in taste. Gotta try both with cigar.

The taste of this 10-year-old rum gives the first impression of a rounded, dry rum, then the delicate notes of white oak and the sweetness of the old Pedro Ximenez casks begin. Aftertaste: Very pleasant, long and sweet.

I received this sample as a "present" with an online order. After tasting it, I wouldn't consider it a present. This is horrible stuff. Crazy artificially sweet. I could't even finish the dram I poured, so I poured it down the drain.

Part of a tasting from February 2021. This seems like a good beginner-rum, as it has a distinct sweetness to it, and the price is not too high. In the nose it's sweet, with hints of vanilla, and the taste-notes have a sherry-like sweetness.

Very nice unexpected gift from my neighbour. Aroma is very sweet, to be honest to much for me. I noticed wood, spice, plums, honey and caramel. It supossed to be elegant, gantle rum but I noticed upleasant alcoholic scent. Taste on the other hand is elegant and subtle. I noticed sweet notes of caramel, wood and maybe little bit of smoke, but what I really liked was combination of dryness and sherry notes. Finish is short, dry, sweet with combination of that sherry flavor. Great rum, if you want to start your rum journey. I would appreciate it if there were less sweet tones in the rum and the rum had a higher ABV content so that the individual flavors had a chance to stand out

My first rum, and after years where I now prefer funky high esther rum the only sweet rum I regulary return to and still enjoy.

Tons of molases in random rum

Chut neni tak libezna, jako u verze 5+5. Je sladsi, jemnejsi chut, vic do toho medu, jj. Ale do sbirky nepujde, sladeni chuti neni subjektivne optimalni.

Karamel og mørke frugter Tynd i smagen og ikke så meget dybe. En smag af rosiner. En smule fad til slut. Ikke videre interessant.

Again another very sweet rum - a sweet bomb if you will It’s the same notes as the 5+5 I reviewed - literally copy and paste. Even the ABV bump hasn’t helped the flavour profile, just makes it even more sickeningly sweet I’ve just reversed my Type 2 Diabetes however I can almost feel it coming back after having this!!! Not good for me and a brand I will avoid I’m afraid

Well-balanced blend, spicy and round. The wood remains on the tongue in the finish, overall very easy to drink.

I like this “rum”, it is soft, sweet and it is keenly priced. Yes, I must confess, sometimes I do like sweet rums. The limit for me is 40g of sugar per liter (yeah Zacapa), everything higher is just too much. For those who doesn´t know, this one has cca 35 g/l. You can smell vanilla, sherry and caramel. The taste is very soft at the beginning, but than it shows this beautiful middle part, which burns a little and reminds you - "it is rum what you are drinking, not some lemonade". The aftertaste is woody, dry and sherry sweet. In the Dos Maderas family I prefer this one. Dos Maderas 5+5 is good, but after you taste the Selection, you don´t want to go back. If you compare it with Luxus, well, Luxus would win at the end, but the price is 3x higher. So, choose wisely. Personally, I have this rum always ready to take a sip or two.

Ok, too sweet for me

I don't understand this rum and the popularity of the product. Far too sweet, not particularly exciting, no good alcohol integration and then a sticky finish, which is fortunately very short. It works quite well in a drink. Not for me neat.
