Made from cane juice but it drinks nothing like a grassy agricole. Expect baked apple, yellow fruit like peach and quince, vanilla, cardamom and cooking spices, with a cigar-box, minty edge. Reunion charm with real tea and pepper on the finish. The common gripe: at 43% it comes across watered-down, and several tasters found it thin, even flat, in the glass.

The nose welcomes us with baked apple, with quite a fine woodiness. It’s a fairly round rum, rather fruity and spicy. You notice aromas of vanilla and cardamom, quite a lot of kitchen spices. This nose evolves towards a cigar box with this classy tobacco. The fruitiness is more on yellow fruits: peach, quince. The mouth is discreet in alcohol strength, with quite a lot of exotic fruits: papaya, mango, passion fruit. The whole is quite fresh, a bit mentholated. The finish brings us back to tobacco leaves and woodiness. All in all a quite nice complexity. The finish is medium-plus in length, continuing on this tobacco, shipyard-style woodiness and these exotic fruits. A good after-dinner rum that differs from agricole with solid assets and excellent value for money considering its age.

A rum from Réunion that starts with a pretty floral bouquet, perfume, notes of menthol freshness, some spices, fruity notes and caramel, for a fresh and gourmand profile. The attack on the palate is very (too) light, with spices and tea flavors that embellish the palate. The finish, moderately long, prolongs the floral and spicy side seen earlier. An interesting rum profile, easy to drink but offering more than it claims.

No comparison with the single cask 2004 tasted just after. Quite nice. A good traditional rum from Réunion but a bit too diluted for me. Tasted in a situation where it didn't develop much in my opinion.

#7417 08.10.2026 Relaxing with some samples while listening to some nice Trance on Spotify. Pretty decent bottling with an OK price tag in my mind. Fresh, fruits, spice, medicinal, mint, licorice chocolate, warm, leather, caramel, roasted wood.

The bottle is pretty, without great originality or finesse. The pronounced color of the content leaves no doubt about the length of its aging. On the nose, you almost find a fruit alcohol with some sharp alcohol notes that sting the back of the nose. You also smell the oak which envelops everything with a certain softness. On the taste, no surprise with the fruit still present but also a bit of vanilla and something a bit bitter that I would describe as vegetal. The finish quickly returns to the wood and some spicy notes. I am rather pleasantly surprised by this rum, I had a good time.

I happened to purchase this bottle on my business trip to Ile de la Rèunion. We decided to add the Rivière du Mât Distillery as the final stop on our journey the day we left the island. This happened to be a great idea, as the staff was really nice and you can have either 1 or 2 samples at the shop free of charge. We tasted much more there and for my surprise I found this bottling superior to Millesime 2003 and 2004 as well. Unfortunately couldn't do the distillery tour but we had a fun time at the store. My point might be higher but this bottle is bringing me the island vibe every time I have a sip.

Rivière du Mât 2006 – 43% Distillery much less publicized in La Réunion than Savanna. Unfortunately, this vintage tastes very flat on the palate, especially in tasting events. This is clearly not the rum that will convince me to take more interest in the distillery…
