Pyrat XO Reserve
Orange, orange peel and vanilla lead here, so much so that several tasters call it an orange liqueur on a rum base rather than a rum. A few pick up glue and solvent underneath the sweetness. Opinions swing hard: some find it easy and citrusy to share, others hit only artificial orange and heat. Many end up using it for baking or cocktails.

How does Pyrat XO Reserve taste?
Aggregated from 335 community reviews.
Sweet, orange-liqueur style, more mixer than rum Deeply divisive. Some enjoy the warm, sweet citrus; most taste artificial orange, sharp alcohol and heavy sugar, comparing it to Don Papa or an orange liqueur. Plenty say it isn't really rum.

27.12.2025 Having a nice tasting with an old fried, not my favourite rums, but we have a nice time. ----------- Fruity and extremely sweet with some caramel and chocolate. Orange sugar water in my mind but very good in a chocolate cake!
Review by Solidfunk
Honey and a little wood, some cognac. Pours clear copper golden. Leaves with some perfume, potpourri. Something like plum even. Cognac. Bottle from Duty Free basement of Canadian embassy in DC. Score.

Pyrat ! Grande découverte assez complexe mais facile, équilibré entre amertume et sucreries Je recommande ! À l’abordage moussaillon !
Review by zabo
Edit: finally packaging 😄 I've had this rum in the cupboard for a while and dug it out from the last corner. But it is and remains mediocre for drinking neat in my opinion. Also tried as a mixer with cola as a fresh drink for warm evenings. No, unfortunately not that either. But perfect for spicing up cheesecake or tiramisu. For me, it remains purely a baking ingredient. Not enough for more, unfortunately.
Review by Portman
Strange. Somehow it feels artificially liqueur-like, but at the same time typical rum characteristics also come through. I'm not sure yet what to make of it, but I'd recommend it to beginners who prefer artificial citrus aromas. It's not craft at all.
Review by Jan Lu
I like the bottle very much and the label is also beautiful. The taste of this rum is not convincing. Very sweet and a bit artificial. Similar to Don Papa, but not quite as bad and drinkable.
Review by Rum Schnacker Falk Redlich
Orangey, mandarin, peppery spicy, wood, not too sweet. Anyone babbling about liqueur-like sweetness here... has never seriously dealt with sweetness.
Review by abaker-rum
Oranges, just straight oranges. You will get oranges from start to finish on the nose, but it has artificial aspect to the orange that deters from the experience. It is on the sweet side but does have some barrel influence which lightly cuts into the sweetness.
Review by S3pp-353
Drink it as recommended, with lemon and ice. Not a sophisticated rum, but ideal for an evening after an unsophisticated day ;-)
Review by Kieron Wood
Absolutely beautiful Soft on the pallet, really fruity and a hint of caramel. The price really makes it accessible
Review by Chrischi78
Even for the price, this is no fun. Basically just sweet with a bit of orange and an alcoholic sharpness - nobody needs that. Definitely not suitable neat, and I doubt it works as a mixer.
Review by Andreas Cebin
Powerful on the nose, very strong orange note in the mouth, finish rather mild.
Review by Decky Hicks Doughty
On the nose the first thing to hit you is brown sugar mixed in with some coffee, baking spice and a little solventy glue. The palate is quite full of sour citrus. There's hints of orange and cinnamon. The finish is short and bitter with a twist of orange peel. For me this is too heavy on the citrus but if you were into the more sour flavours this could be your thing.
Review by Heffernan
Tasted neat, of course. Very clear: very fruity with strong notes of orange, slightly bitter, plus a very light vanilla note and a bit of wood. My bottling is not particularly sweet as sometimes described. Soft and very complex. Still affordable for this quality. I really like it!
Review by MJ72
Orange bomb, supported by vanilla on the finish.
Review by Rumpalumpa
I would describe this as a citrus version of Don Papa. Because it's equally obvious that artificial flavors are involved here. Plenty of citrus, orange and grapefruit. In the finish, some of the "real" rum seems to come through. Edit: After drinking 2x 2cl samples in the evening, I woke up with a headache. I'll be so bold as to attribute that to this chemical mix.
Review by Massimo Vezzoli
Rum to enjoy with a good chocolate dessert. Very sweet with a strong scent of orange and vanilla; on the palate you taste the same fragrances of orange and vanilla.
Review by Insta: spiritofbernard 🇫🇷
Not even imaginable pure, it can indeed replace a triple sec for cocktails but given the sweetness I will stay on a Cointreau, Grand Marnier or even a well made arrangé to avoid shooting my brain.
Review by Cundog
I’m rating higher than my initial taste. I taste the complexity and the flavor is just off sweet. With a hint of almost smoky taste to me.
Review by Goodoboy30
Everybody says strong orange taste. I don't get that. Yes there is orange but it's not overpowering. Really good
Review by Werner10
For me this isn't a good one. I don't mind a bit of orange taste in my rum, but the orange in this one doesn't taste that good imo. More like some overripe oranges. I'm giving this one 40/100 i can drink it straight but i can't say that i like it. Maybe good for a cocktail or so.
Review by Bradford Laird
Warm citrus notes very easy to drink. nice to share with friends
Review by Korbinian Koch
Quite sharp and alcoholic, punchy with few deeper aromas

Orange peel, tastes like an orange liqueur.
Review by Jakob
Quite unbalanced rum with clearly noticeable alcohol and a very dominant citrus-orange note. Pure not recommended.
Review by Константин
Too sweet.
Review by Christian B.
A bit sharp for the price, but at least I don't mind it.
Review by Gregor
Who likes it sweet and citrusy should access. Who likes it natural should rather leave the fingers of it
Review by BIGmama
Hints of orange, very smooth
Review by Dunzi
I bought this rum some time ago because I read quite positive reviews. I can't understand them. The often mentioned orange flavor is briefly present, but that's it. Not my thing and especially a price not justified for me.

Condense Christmas pudding, this is not rum
Review by Benoit Bail
Not to my taste, a good substitute for Cointreau or Grand Marnier in cocktails or on crepes.
Review by Hans-Peter Jank
Alcoholic orange syrup. Good for baking. No comparison to the old version from Anguilla.
Review by Pongo
The smell was promising, but.....

Not my type of rum.
Review by Don Grisu
Expectations were unfortunately higher than the real picture. Drinkable in itself but I would rather use it for cocktails.
Review by Sebastian Kornett
Worst spirit I've ever drunk and no, this is not rum! This is a spirit based on rum
Review by Miňo
Sweet orange and vanilla. Also a strange 'disinfectant' sweetness.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
More like an orange liqueur based on rum, but quite okay for that.
Review by Andreas Renöfält
Just as slimy and flavored as Don Papa. Bluff.
Review by Basti
Sweet orange liqueur....

Needs to be mixed
Review by Tom K
Sharper, very citrusy taste at the end.
Review by Rado Vito
I had to taste it again after one year, just for confirmation for this review and please, don´t push me to do it again. One world - turpentine. Smell is terrible, taste is surprisingly not the worst, but aftertaste is again - terrible. Why would you drink something like this, when you can find so many good rums for lower cost? Throw it away, or give it to your enemy.
Review by Montana
A fruity-sweet aroma with hints of solvent and glue, slightly like roasted almonds. A sweet yet bitter taste, slightly fruity in the background, somewhat unusual.
Review by Michael Schillheim
Very artificial. Also usable for mixing at the bar
Review by Robert Houba
Similar to Remedy, synthetic taste.

Read full review →It makes a variation on standard rum and cola and even goes well with lemonade. Is it really rum though? Well in name it is and even its presentation is in spirit with rum but sadly overall this isn't really rum. As a drink though its not bad but not...
