Pyrat XO Reserve
Orange, orange peel and vanilla lead here, so much so that several tasters call it an orange liqueur on a rum base rather than a rum. A few pick up glue and solvent underneath the sweetness. Opinions swing hard: some find it easy and citrusy to share, others hit only artificial orange and heat. Many end up using it for baking or cocktails.

27.12.2025 Having a nice tasting with an old fried, not my favourite rums, but we have a nice time. ----------- Fruity and extremely sweet with some caramel and chocolate. Orange sugar water in my mind but very good in a chocolate cake!

6,5:On the nose, citrus aromas (orange and lemon) dominate. It also has a vegetal, even medicinal/herbal aspect. Slight notes of spice-ginger, vanilla are also present, some woodiness . 6:On the palate, it's sweet and the orange carries off - almost - everything in its path. A slight acidity and bitterness make you think of zest. The timid spicy:ginger, vanilla, woody notes are still there.Underneath there is a very weak torrent of tropical fruits, rarely traceable. After few more sipps this rum becomes more and more bitter orange. 6:The finish is short and citrusy.

Honey and a little wood, some cognac. Pours clear copper golden. Leaves with some perfume, potpourri. Something like plum even. Cognac. Bottle from Duty Free basement of Canadian embassy in DC. Score.

Edit: endlich verpacken 😄 Hab diesen Rum schon länger im Schrank und aus der letzten Ecke gekrammt. Aber er ist und bleibt mittelmäßig zum pur trinken m.M. nicht geeignet. Auch als Mixer mit Cola probiert als frischen Drink für warme Abende. Nein leider auch nicht. Aber zum aufpeppen für Käsekuchen oder eine Tiramisu bestens geeignet. Für mich ist und bleibt er auch rein eine Backzutat. Für mehr reicht es leider nicht.

I like the bottle very much and the label is also beautiful. The taste of this rum is not convincing. Very sweet and a bit artificial. Similar to Don Papa, but not quite as bad and drinkable.

Eigenartig. Wirkt irgendwie künstlich-likörartig, gleichzeitig wirken aber auch typische Rum-Eigenschaften. Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher, was ich davon halten soll, würde ihn aber Einsteigern empfehlen, die eher auf künstliche Zitrusaromen stehen. Handwerklich ist der nix.

Oranges, just straight oranges. You will get oranges from start to finish on the nose, but it has artificial aspect to the orange that deters from the experience. It is on the sweet side but does have some barrel influence which lightly cuts into the sweetness.

Trinke ihn wie empfohlen, mit Zitrone und Eis. Kein Anspruchsvoller Rum, aber ideal für einen Abend nach einem anspruchslosen Tag ;-)

Selbst für den Preis macht das kein Spaß. Eigentlich nur süß mit ein bisschen Orange und einer alkoholischen Schärfe, - braucht kein Mensch. Pur auf jeden Fall nicht geeignet, ob er als Mixer taugt, mag ich zu bezweifeln.

On the nose the first thing to hit you is brown sugar mixed in with some coffee, baking spice and a little solventy glue. The palate is quite full of sour citrus. There's hints of orange and cinnamon. The finish is short and bitter with a twist of orange peel. For me this is too heavy on the citrus but if you were into the more sour flavours this could be your thing.

Natürlich pur verkostet. Ganz klar: sehr fruchtig mit starken Noten von Orange, leicht herb, dazu ganz leichte Vanillenote und ein wenig Holz. Meine Abfüllung ist nicht besonders süß wie teilweise beschrieben. Weich und sehr komplex. Für diese Qualität immer noch gut bezahlbar. Gefällt mir sehr gut!

Würde dies als eine Zitrusversion des Don Papa beschreiben. Denn es ist gleich offensichtlich, dass hier künstliche Aromen im Spiel sind. Ordentlich Zitrus, Orange und Grapefruit. Im Abgang scheint etwas vom "echten" Rum durch. Edit: Nachdem ich am Abend 2x 2cl Proben getrunken habe, bin ich mit Kopfschmerzen aufgewacht. Ich bin mal so frei das auf diese Chemiepansche zurückzuführen.

Not even imaginable pure, it can indeed replace a triple sec for cocktails but given the sweetness I will stay on a Cointreau, Grand Marnier or even a well made arrangé to avoid shooting my brain.
