Most tasters land in the high 9s and call it one of the best Hampdens they've had — the recurring word is balance. Grilled pineapple, esters, glue and solvent up front, then something bacony and spicy, with the 55.6% remarkably well tucked in. A few find it "almost a bit flat," meaning rounder and calmer than the wilder Continental bottlings. The oak leans heavy for a couple of reviewers.

A glass of Hampden history! It still has the classic Hampden essence, only much rounder, riper and extremely tasty 😋. A real treat! Many thanks to Dr. Django Today a small cross comparison with the RA JMC: The TRC is not as intense on the nose as the RA, but much more incisive and intense on the palate. The RA, on the other hand, is almost soft, but more "drinkable"! They don't give each other much... brilliant Hampden essence

Didn't understand the hype around Hampden until I had this bottling in my glass. Lovely grilled pineapple and other typical fruits, vanilla and wood. Alcohol is excellently integrated. Fantastic rum, but unfortunately far too expensive.

Legendary bottle. Glad to have gotten a sample. Nose is super sexy. On the palate then comes to me almost a little too little, but maybe I just had too high expectations for this sample. On par with the TRC 26 in a direct comparison. Nobilis 93 is still a corner better for me personally. 02/2023 tasted again and remain at 92, horny stuff.

Awesome, very meaty Hampden! Absolute Champions League and so far one of the best Hampdens I've had the chance to drink. Very well balanced and tasty, I wouldn't mind having a bottle on my shelf. 😁

Already very promising on the nose thanks to the outstanding balance of heavy tropical fruits, pastry notes, subtle lactic acid, spices, wood... impressive. On the palate, the promise made by the nose is fully delivered – tropical fruits, citrus aromas, wood, spices, pastry sweetness, all in an almost perfectly rounded blend that comes across pleasantly smooth without being boring. Excellent.

04.09.2022 Meeting up for a nice after event party at my hotel. Good rum and food spread over a full day. Nose Intense, light wood, faint smoke, fruity, glue, ester, faint marzipan. Palate Medium intense, oily, light roasted wood, fruity, naturally sweet, light glue, ester. Finish Very long and warm, ester, light glue, pineapple, light wood, faint smoke.

Little 1990 C<>H cross-tasting with 2x RA, RC Ed. 5, TWJ and TRC. Honestly, quite hard for me to chose a winner out of the TRC, first RA and first RC… The TRC is definitely amazing. High intensity, yet extremely well balanced with the alcohol being very well integrated. Doesn’t get much better I think.

Relatively quiet Hampden. Very balanced and round. I had the tropical HV 2010 C<>H a week ago and it stomps this one into the ground. Tomorrow I will probably not remember this one. Too bad, but life goes on. Still nice balanced bottling, completely overpriced and virtually impossible to get.

8,8:On the nose, esters and glue, intense, solvents, licorice, overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, some orange peel, roasted wood notes like marzipan, confectionery, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the molasses is grassy with hay, vegetal with briny olive, flowery and herbaceous, slightly sweet with honey, pairing overripe fruits, slightly pungent and barrel impact, balanced. 8,9:On the palate, the attack is balanced, sweet with honey, overripe banana and pineapple, some citrus fruits like grapefruit and orange peel, medicinal notes like esters, solvents, as the wood is spicy with anise, vanilla, oaky and nutty, mild bacon could be tasted, and molasses is vegetal with briny olive, flowery...on oxidation the rum becomes slightly astringent. 8,6:The finish is long, dry&tannic, the wood is roasted, smoky with crunchy bread, roasted nuts, spicy with anise, quite oaky, pairing slightly pungent tropical fruits, briny, earthy, herbaceous molasses and various medicinal notes. Despite the relatively high ester content extremely mild and even relatively sweet in taste. The alcohol is extremely well integrated here. To the fruity notes, especially delicious pineapple you notice here clearly, comes something bacony, smoky spicy. The aftertaste is like pineapple from the grill, discreet but long lasting.

The esters sting a bit on the first nose but you also sense lots of fruit, overripe tropical fruits, banana, pineapple. Also wood glue. A buttery side softens this quite extreme nose. The palate hits hard, lots of different fruits, tutti frutti. The esters are more discreet than on the nose. The woodiness is very well integrated. The finish is long and tasty, the esters come back at the end, a slight bitterness supports the aromas until the end. A very nice Hampden continental.

Tasted with the Flensburg JMC, both C<>H Marque, Flensburg with higher ABV, Rum Cask aged longer. In direct comparison, Flensburg seems like someone installed a turbo, with crazy notes of fermented buttermilk and citrus fruits on the nose, fantastic! Rum Cask seems almost a bit flat in comparison, i.e. clearly more balanced, with a broader fruit palette and baking spices. On the palate similar, Flensburg with more power and acidity, Rum Cask rounder and more complex, also somewhat bacon-spicy.

Der legendäre 1990 Jahrgang. Sehe ich das auch so? Jein... In der Nase schlägt er ein, ordentlich Ester, überreife tropische Früchte, Apfel, Orange und Grapefruit, aber auch nicht weniger Lösungsmittel, Gummi und Lack. Was der Rum nicht verbergen kann, ist seine lange Lagerung, denn die Eichenfracht ist mMn etwas over the top. Im Mund ist er einfach nur lecker! Cremig, ausgewogen, komplex, vollmundig und süß. Nicht mehr so viel Lösungsmittel, angenehm fruchtig. Viel Anis und Erdige Noten. In der Nase etwas too much, im Gaumen richtig lecker

A full and very rounded nose: intense fruit esters, a bit buttery and distinctly vinegary. There’s even a slight bacon nuance at the back. Honey, mandarin, and pineapple follow. The typical glue notes are noticeable along with some dry wood. On the palate again intense yet rounded: fine esters, slightly astringent, now ripe pineapple upfront with sweet-bitter orange peel. Again a bit of light bacon and a somewhat strong pecan nut. At the back and in the finish a slight anise note with the pineapple. A great, old C<>H...

... Hampden is a distillery producing incredibly aromatic rums. That’s why part of its production is used as a base raw material for perfumes. I recommend tasting gently yet incredibly rich older rums over 20 years, or very young rums with a high ester content called DOK. Don’t be afraid of the high alcohol volume ;)

In the glass, a strong hit of glue, esters, solvents and nail polish. Later spices, some wood and also tropical fruits. On the palate, tropical fruits dominate, although I initially also perceive a slight floral note.

This 1990 bottling shows itself, in my opinion, in a typical vintage style: calm, yet still present. Typical in character, but more restrained and elegant for Hampden standards. On the palate, there are crispy notes, puffed rice, and a very harmonious balance. The finish starts fermented and overripe, somewhat reminiscent of durian. Later, green pepper, vanilla, and peach develop. Overall very good, but not outstanding; somewhat weaker in direct comparison to other high-profile bottlings.

Un nez additif dans lequel on trouve le combo classique de la distillerie fruits tropicaux bien mûrs (ananas, papaye) et esters. Une petite note fumée complète ce nez engageant. La bouche est douce avec un léger boisé, de l'ananas, un zeste d'orange et des esters. On ressent presque une légère sucrosité. La finale est pimenté mais pas très longue. Un nez envoûtant et une bouche douce, élégante et fruitée font de ce rum une belle réussite. C'est très plaisant.

The rum offers a great nose with lots of citrus fruits, sweet pastries, and barrel notes. There's also a bit of rubber coming through. It can also convince in taste. Everything very round and harmonious. Too bad I only have a sample of it.

according to J.W.von Goethe I’d say live is to short to drink bad rum. And I say better less but good rums. Instantly, I found so many different tastes and smells that the RumX profile got really colorful. In a very positiv way it’s not too funky as the esters are very balanced, lots of fruits, banana,rotten pineapple but just a hint of polish. And surprisingly fresh with eucalyptus and gras notes. Would be a 9.4 if the ABV was better integrated

First off: I don't like Hampden and this sample is a last attempt to make friends with this style. So pearls before swine... Very complex, dirty, varied, wonderfully integrated wood (30 years!), alcohol super integrated, great mouthfeel etc. In the end just not my type. If it were, it would have 90+ points.

Comparative tasting of: - RX271: RumClub 26 y.o. - RX8041: TRC 30 y.o. - RX7787: RA 30 y.o. - RX11796: SdR 31 y.o. - RX15404: RA 33 y.o. There is no bad rum from this vintage, yet noticeable differences can be seen in the comparison. For me, RumClub and TRC are ahead today; both are complex and fantastically well-balanced, RumClub with a bit more power and depth, TRC with perfectly integrated alcohol. The younger RA is also excellent, but the alcohol integration is slightly worse, so 1 point deduction. The SdR has perfectly integrated alcohol but is a bit weaker in terms of depth and sharpness, plus the finish is somewhat less complex and interesting. The older RA is a bit flatter again, so last place for today.

This is fun. An absolutely outstanding Hampden. The nose has lots of fruit, sweetness, and glue. It's still a bit wild here. On the palate very well-balanced and full-bodied. Nice cask influence. The bourbon barrel worked very nicely. Bacon and coal come through as well. Nice complexity with a long dry finish. Very tasty.
