It's classic Port Mourant — anise, licorice, black tea and green apple — but rounder and more floral than most, with milk-chocolate orange peel and a hint of mint. At 61% the alcohol sits surprisingly well; several tasters guessed it under 55% blind. One regret is shared often: "wish I had more than a sample."

Update 2025/01/03: Over four years after my first tasting. In the meantime, I was able to get hold of a bottle, which is now almost empty. There is still hardly a bottling that I love as much as the Karaya. Today's crosstasting with the Sponge 1998 is to see whether Karaya is still the number one among continental PMs. From previous crosstasting tests, I remember the Sponge as being stronger and woodier. Even today, the Sponge shows a resinous, bitter side that is foreign to the very round Karaya. In the mouth, the Sponge is also stronger, more tannic and less nuanced in its fruitiness. Unsurprisingly, the pattern continues with the Sponge in the finish. The barrel has left a clearer mark on the rum. I would have liked more rough edges in 2021, the Sponge has exactly that and yet the Karaya is the better rum. In terms of content, my tasting from 2021 still matches my impressions exactly. I add a mentholated freshness on the nose. +2 - I just love this stuff! Original 2021/12/09: This is great cinema. The maturity of this Port Mourant is on point. Earl Grey perfectly integrated into the wood on the nose, then a Christmassy profile with ripe fruit, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. I don't yet find the prominent aniseed on the palate. A fantastic balance in the mouth. A sweet tickle on the tip of the tongue, then Earl Grey again and the Christmas notes from the nose. Mint is added and then the fruit kicks in, mainly citrus, but also some intense tropical fruit such as pineapple. The finish is long, smooth and harmonious and brings out the familiar aromas once again. A fantastic rum, it just lacks a little depth and a few rough edges. So far my best continental matured PM. Unfortunately my sample is already empty 😭

09.02.2024 Nordlichter treffen. Retasting and I still like this profile. Very nice and well rounded. --------------------- This is a bottling with a flavour profile slightly different from the normal Port Mourant profile and that in a good way.

Beautiful complexity, tart spicy and woody notes meet licorice, green herbs, black tea and subtle citrus aromas with some sweetness in the background. Continental aged PM at a high level.

Today three Uitvlugt from 1997 24yr (RX11475), 1998 22yr (RX8122) and 1999 14yr (RX6548) parallel in the glass. In contrast to its competitors, the Duchess has a nice dark color, while the others are very pale. In terms of taste, the Tamosi is just ahead of the Duchess. Unfortunately, the Kill Devil cannot quite keep up with its competitors.

Today, Port Mourants has been around for what feels like an eternity. El Dorado 1997: Delicious Port Mourant with the typical aroma profile. Very pleasing, alcohol perfectly integrated, very drinkable. It lacks a little complexity. 85 pts. El Dorado 1999: A little more closed than its brother from 1997, the alcohol is not as well integrated. I had hoped for more here. 80 pts. Tamosi Karaya 1998: Great stuff! With the typical Port Mourant aromas that take root in its complexity and expand aroma-wise. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and pleasant, the alcohol is excellently integrated. 90pts.

Jau, vorletzter für heute, Uitvlugt ist hier natürlich deutlich erkennbar. Sehr nodrig dieses Teil. Geht halt Richtung Schwarztee, ansonsten halt die übrigen Modrigkeit + etwas Lakritze und etwas Vanille :)

I have to revise my rating from over 2 years ago upwards by one point to 90 points. As I said, the bottle has now been open for over 2 years and the rum has gained weight as a result. The smell is a typical PM but with a touch of yellow fruit. The taste and finish are very balanced at over 60% and really very pleasant to drink. Bright fruits with a pleasant sweetness here too. Long finish. I am impressed.

Fruity on the nose, especially green apple, but also beautifully spicy. Great natural sweetness in the mouth followed by herbs and tea. Beautifully complex with a great spicy finish. Beautiful Port Mourant profile. Tip: Leave longer in the glass 20-30 min

One of the best Port Mourant I have ever tasted. It is typical of Port Mourant but without bitter wood and with a very floral touch in the mouth. It's surprising but really great!

On the nose: Mild notes. Woody notes. Nice green apple notes. Herbal noteswith maybe tea notes being the dominant one. Licorice/anise notes. Light citrus note. Nice complexity all together. Taste: Anise, licorice and woody notes at first. Herbal notes like black tea and some minty notes aswell. High abv is integrated perfectly and it gives the rum a very good body. Some citrus notes in the background. Complex Finish: Warm. Herbal notes. Light anise. Woody notes. Dry finish. Complexity and how the tasting notes are blended together makes this a stand out for me in Port Mourant rums.

Quite a crisp PM. Alcohol could be a little better integrated. Aromatically, herbs such as sage and thyme meet licorice and nutmeg, plus subtly salty and woody with a light fresh citrus note in the finish. A little too strong for me personally, but still delicious!

This is probably one of the best rums I ever tasted. Complex. Very layered. But sort of light in body too. The alcohol strength is not nearly as pungents as you would expect at 61%+. Actually I've had tasting where we put this earlier in the line up <55% because it's so well balanced. Beautiful rum. Easily worth its 180€ pricetag. Tamosi is on top of the game.

The first sip is screaming PORT MOURANT all over! It wonderfully hits you with its aniseed and liquorice aromas, paired with a touch of spices and a hint of mint (on my nose/palate, it wasn’t as strong as menthol). Even if it is a 22y old rum, I really do not pick as much wood or barrel-related flavors as I would expected, which I find it good! All in all, a great example of what the truly missed Uitvlugt distillery was capable of.

The distinct licorice note you have to like, joined by orange which makes the rum almost taste like a "mild" Cointreau. A pleasant, warm finish in the taste, the alcohol comes but a little too clearly to the fore.

NOSE: Green banana skins, crushed anise seeds, brazil nuts, slivered almonds, dandelion blossoms, carrot tops. Freshly sawn sweet gum wood. Kneaded pencil eraser. PALATE: Creamy. Sweet, salty, yet lifted & herbal. Milk chocolate-covered orange peel, candied fennel, saltwater taffy. To a lesser extent, banana bread w/ cardamom. FINISH: Candied fennel seeds, Moroccan mint tea, vanilla, chocolate covered hazelnuts. Allspice. Model glue, shoe polish. Gasoline, black licorice. More pencil erasers & saltwater taffy. OVERALL: This is an excellent rum. And perhaps one of the best Port Mourant I’ve ever had. It’s somewhat ethereal, with notes of flowers, herbal teas, pastries, & leather polishes wafting in & out of focus. Nothing out of place, or hitting you over the head. In fact, it’s both one of the most complex PMs I’ve had, and the most subtle. I may have taken a fraction of a point away for it drinking well below proof. But this is memorable stuff. SCORE: 89/100

Nose is very sweet like young pm fruity and spicy Mouth is a little strong but after a few sec I blows up in citrus and caramel like a funky version of typical old PM The palate is not so complex

Banana and black tea on the nose. Very nice and round on the palate. Banana and black tea here too, plus a little mint. With a little time and a few drops of water, it opens up a little more. A great Port Mourant!
