The surprise here is the Jamaica New Yarmouth cask finish sitting on top of a 17-year Fijian pot still. You get the classic Fiji signature — esters, pineapple, minerals, a salty edge — plus a big fruity jolt from the Jamaican barrel. Several tasters blind-guessed it as Jamaican. Fruity and dry, with solvent and rubber notes and a cask-strength kick.

Very delicious rum! Full load of esters and fruits with a cool fresh note! The alcohol is integrated well. The finish is long, dry, estery, fruity just delicious! The finishing has a high impact on this one! A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!

what an ester grenade... for me personally, although I usually like it, the New Yarmouth finish takes over a bit too much here, even after an hour of breathing. the fjjj itself brings nice typical medicinal notes, as well as chamomile, pineapple, and coffee/mocha notes and a hint of dark chocolate with sea salt. the jny finish, on the other hand, brings the esters strongly to the fore which I would not have expected... for me personally it's a bit too vinegar/ester-heavy, and too alcoholic on the back end... nevertheless it's an absolute aroma bomb and an exciting project at an extremely fair price!

In my opinion an underrated representative from Fiji. The finish in the New Yarmouth cask fits excellently with the Fiji profile. Overall a bit sharp-edged but also with lots of fruit and a surprising dryness and slight saltiness. Excellent value for money!

Edit: Tried again today as a Cuba Libre. Very fine mixer. In my opinion, very suitable. A totally underrated rum, corrected upwards in my opinion. As a New Yarmouth nerd, I can recognize the profile well. The finish is daring, outside the comfort zone, but unfortunately awesome. And for just over 50€ top value for money.

A great rum for the Germany vs Hungary EM game 😂 Nice fruity, a bit of spice, super integrated alcohol... great rum. Not terribly complex, but perfect for daily sipping or more. Really fun.

A really strong Fiji rum, I really like it very, very much. Many esters are noticeable, but also tropical fruits, especially pineapple. Also it is still quite metallic, as well as slightly funky.

06.11.2021 Another visit to "Den Danske Rom & Whiskyfestival and once again with special access and many very drunk people both days. Notes. Not a bad rum eaoacially if you look at the price tag. Fresh and fruity with some esters and medicinal notes. The palate is OK balanced with a minty touch. The finish is long and dry with a touch of citrus. There is a very faint marzipan note in the profile.

Nice aroma, kind of "technical" Fiji. From what I remember, this aroma is associated with a good piece. Taste-wise quite sharp, but definitely distinctive and strong Fiji. Next tasting already friendlier. I feel technical tones with honey, which reminds me of rums from Mhoba or maybe from Ghana. I don't feel the NY finish at all.

Strong ester profile, ripe fruits, and mineral notes. On the palate, these same notes are still present and pleasant. A bit too tame for me given the initial profile. It's good, the alcohol is well integrated but I would have preferred something more intense. Edit: impression confirmed. It's still very good. But I would have liked even more. Its freshness is very appreciable.

Tried as a 2cl sample. My first Fiji rum and I have to say, it's really good. If I hadn't known what was in the glass, I would have assigned it to Jamaica, maybe because of the finish. On the nose, typical strong ester notes, though I feel Hampden gets a bit more fruit in. Taste-wise similar, slightly salty and the alcohol isn't as well integrated as I'm used to from others. Still a great rum with potential to improve. I really need to try a Fiji without a Jamaica finish. 55€/0.5l (09/02/2022) is absolutely justified. Great rum.

Interesting, but not really my taste. Don't need a bottle of it. NY finish is too dominant for me, alcohol could also be better integrated. But for the price still not bad.

Ester, fruits, very very light smoky notes. A really great rum, but the alcohol is very present. The bottle has been open for about 6 weeks now and somehow it keeps getting better, or I’ve just gotten used to it. Smoky, fruity, mineral, a bit of everything. For the price, it’s totally okay.

On the one hand, I find the typical Fiji notes of rubber, rotting vegetables on the nose, on the other hand a nice, very ripe fruit. On the palate the fruit comes out more clearly, ripe pineapple, mirabelle plum with a trace of artificial stickiness. The vegetal notes remain present in the background. In the dry finish they come back a bit more clearly. I can hardly assess the influence of the finish - probably it is not uninvolved in the strong fruit.

Nice Fiji, but lacks a bit the fruityness compared to others. Well integrated alcohol with a good amount of funk. Rather short finish with metallic / mineral notes typical of Fiji. Overall a nice release

You can clearly notice the finish in the New Yarmouth cask and that certainly overlays a lot. But I like NY, so that's okay. Especially for the price back then. Otherwise a bit mineral, slight apple note. But the best is certainly the long fruity finish.

Fresh and fruity comes through on the nose with a decent hit of solvent. Tropical fruit towards papaya, plus apricot, mandarin, and lime. At the back a buttery caramel-cream candy sweetness. On the palate it is fruity but immediately salty with a slight bacon note. It feels metallic-fresh. I find bergamot and sour cherry, but also artificial notes like iodine. At the back the spice comes through with star anise and nutmeg. It also has something green, saffron-like. Here the NY cask really fits well with the Fiji. Very well done!

A Fiji rum with a Jamaica finish (JNY) that somehow wanders between these worlds and doesn't really do justice to either. On the nose mainly a basket of citrus fruits, behind which hides the typical mineral saltiness of Fiji. On the palate, I get the impression of a thinner representative from Jamaica. Overall, the influence of the finish is a bit too strong and there's too little Fiji flavor for the quite high age. A combination of two great and characterful rum styles that loses me somewhere in between.

Another interesting Fiji that on the nose already strongly reminds of Jamaica, but overall tends more towards citrus fruits, whereas in Jamaica I rather taste tropical fruits. In the finish ("B Note") the rum is a bit lame which deducts points compared to the inviting nose and the delicious taste.

Very nice Jamaica nose. On the palate then solid ester mishmash between Fiji and Jamaica with an interesting metallic note behind all the others. Doesn't get boring and all that for a great price-performance ratio.

For me overall a significantly underrated rum. Great profile similar to the 2001s, with plastic, honey, and spices. The NY cask additionally gives a fruitiness that suits the rum well. Only the not optimally integrated alcohol and the somewhat short finish prevent a higher rating. At the release price (€54.90) an absolute bang for the buck.

On the nose esters to no end, with pineapple and something very fresh, like mint, metal. On the palate the rum spreads quickly throughout the entire mouth. Planty and grassy taste dominate at first, then comes black pepper with a slight bitterness. It becomes astringent and the grassy note prevails in the finish! A complex rum, but not quite balanced.

Finally, a rum from one of the Independent Bottlers that are making lots of noise lately: The Rum Cask. Let’s see if this Fijian deliver. C: Light Gold. N: 5min. Ooh, there is oiliness and nail polish remover, but not in the amounts I usually like. Also, seawater and whiff of celery and peel from granny apples. 20min. Soft burnt eucalyptus, pickled celery and peel from granny apples. Rasp- and strawberry, lime as well. Rather sweet and light ester-y. There is a soft oak influence that I like very much. M: Pineapples, smoke and floral notes. I also get strawberry. I wonder if more age = oak influence, would have damaged this Fijian? F: Not long but gentle. B. I’ve a sample but I want a bottle or two. I like this vintage although it is less phenolic that the 2009.

Ester-heavy, fruity on the nose, on the palate a very pleasant barrel influence is added. The finish is full-bodied, dry. The tannins from the barrel come through nicely, giving this rum a nice depth and complexity.

Mmmmh, esters, fruits, very very light smoky notes. A really great round rum that always works. If you can't decide among all the rums in the home bar, just take this one and you'll never be disappointed. My very personal price-performance winner.

A super complex rum with very pronounced esters and a top price-performance ratio. For 55 euros you got a very ripe and multi-layered single cask rum at cask strength, which you don't have in your glass every day. It obviously strongly reminds of a Jamaican, no wonder with that cask finish, but still goes its own ways.
