Toffee, vanilla and dry leather up front, with candied tropical fruit and a nutty, salted-cashew edge that a couple of tasters kept coming back to. It's a sweet, syrupy Panama-style column rum aged 20 years at 48.4%, but the alcohol isn't fully tucked in — the finish turns sharp and astringent. One fan called it the best of the first Rare Proof batch.

It’s the best one in the “Rare Proof Series” first batch. It’s seems that Panama is my favorite country when it comes to the sweet Spanish styled Ron, cause I also like “Ron Zafra”. The nose is sweet, fruity and nutty. At the palate and during the rather long finish it’s complex, well balanced, sweet, spicy, fruity and nutty.

The representative confirms that this is a genuine 20-year-old and that no sugar has been added. I also think that's credible. There is a lot of dry leather, toffee, wood and some cocoa.

Fruity notes are hidden behind strong vanilla and sweetness. Salty cashews stand out in the taste. Too sweet overall.

Compared to the 1999 this one ia a lot better. Far more punch in the flavours and wood. Still on the sweet side and kind of syrupy, without it being too dominant.

The alcohol is not very well integrated and the too astringent side is disturbing during the tasting. Otherwise, it’s a good molasses rum. Exotic candied fruit, caramel, pastry spices on the nose with a touch of wood. On the palate you find the spices, slightly cooked caramel, vanilla, and wood. The finish is long but very sharp.

Meine RumRatings Review von vor 6 Jahren: Nach ein paar Jahren Pause vom Rum mein Wiedereinstieg vor 7 Jahren. Definitiv der beste Malecon und die Präsentation ist top. Für Freunde des süßen Rums definitiv eine Empfehlung. Der Malecon deutet schon in der Nase an was er zu bieten hat ohne dabei aufdringlich zu sein. Frucht und Karamel. Vanille und deutliche Eichennoten. Am Gaumen ist der Rum durchaus komplex. Es grüßt viel Süße wie Karamel aber auch Würze und etwas Holz mit einer schönen Wärme, welche die 48% Alkohol mit gibt. Der Rum balanciert alles sehr gut und ist daher weich und angenehm zu trinken. Dabei hat er einen vollen Körper und eine samtige Konsistenz. Im Abgang ist mehr Holz vom Fass mit einer fruchtigen Note präsent. Hier macht der Rum eine Punktlandung. Zum Ende bleibt vor allem eine leichte süße Fassnote welche dann aber doch etwas zu schnell nachlässt. Ich war schon von dem Malecon 25 Jahre begeistert, welcher eine gelungende Mischung aus Süße und Holz präsentiert. Der Rare Proof von Malecon ist für mich dabei noch eine Steigerung davon. Wobei der Schwerpunkt hier eher auf der Süße liegt. Die perfekt eingebundenen 48% Alkohol machen ihn aber zu dem komplexeren Rum der beiden.
