The Duchess Uitvlugt Guyana 27 1993
Sip this one neat and slow — it's an old, dry Demerara that leans woody more than sweet. Expect roasted nuts, tobacco, pencil shavings and a faint honey, with peppery cask-strength heat that most tasters say stays integrated rather than burning. One reviewer caught coffee and dark chocolate. A few found it thin and a touch dusty, so it splits people.
- Roasted nutty depth
- Heat well integrated
- Complex, layered nose

04.09.2022 Meeting up for a nice after event party at my hotel. Good rum and food spread over a full day. Nose Light roasted wood, fruity, faint smoke, light licorice, faint chocolate, light nutts, faint medicinal. Palate Oily, light wood, roasted, medium dry, faint smoke, dried fruit, light nutts, faint mint. Finish Medium to long, roasted wood, tannins, dried fruit, light chocolate.

8,7:On the nose, the first impression we get is balanced with honey, roasted wood notes, mostly nuts, spices like cinnamon, pepper and vanilla, grassy, flowery molasses, herbaceous and pencil shavings, fruits with citrus, banana and pear. On aeration, the wood is smoky and salty, buttery with butterscotch, chocolate, a strong note of biscuits arises well after pouring rum in the glass. We must admit, that it is very complex, multifaceted, as there are hints of grappa, metallic patina, green fruits and grapes, as well as some tobacco. 8,8:On the palate, the attack is tasty, sweet with honey, oily and creamy, later dry with roasted wood notes like nuts, butterscotch, brioche and biscuits, spicy and smoky, later salty, fruits with banana, citrus and pear, the molasses is mineral, minty, later herbaceous and earthy with tobacco, perhaps also with hints of basil...whatta complex rum... 8,6:The finish is long, dry&tannic, slightly metallic, less balanced, a bit darker with roasted notes, dried fruits, we might notice pencil shavings...

So Uitvlugt doesn't really suit my taste. It's another very musty rum, and you can still detect some mocha, nuts and smoke on the palate. I'd like to try the best rated rum on RumX to see if it's really that good ;-)

Very lovely and balanced in the nose and on the palate with overall a lot of wood but not too much, very subtle fruity and honey like sweetness. Alcohol integrated very well with peppery heat but no burn. Coffee and dark bitter chocolate, I like!

This 93 PM is not my favorite. It seems a bit thin, at the same time the alcohol is not well integrated. The taste is rather mineral, bitter and dry.

NOSE: Light light caramel, vanilla, bananas foster, particle board, white oak. In the background, a small amount of tar and charcoal. PALATE: Med bodied, but generous & waxy. Green banana skins, papaya, macadamia nuts, bulb fennel. Light licorice. FINISH: More macadamia nuts, pear skin spices, turmeric, papaya seeds, bulb fennel, papaya. Saline- salted pencil shavings. Lightly floral. OVERALL: This is such a fun profile. Relatively simple, but more lifted & tropical and bright, with a lovely waxy-paraffin texture. SCORE: 83/100

If I blind tasted this, and had to guess the distillery, I would have guessed Clarendon. This rum shares a lot of similarities with Plantation Jamaica Clarendon MMW Vintage 2007 (the one in their bird series). Fruity with a hint of tobacco and spices. Very easy to sip. Thefatrumpirate states "... more malty character. If someone nosed this and said they thought it was Scotch Whisky I wouldn't be surprised. [...] If I were more fond of Scotch whiskey than I am Bourbon, I suspect I would enjoy this even more than I have" and honestly I don't quite follow his comparison - this is an exceptionel quality rom and I have never tasted whisky which could be compared to this rum (although I have to admit, that my whisky experience is quite limited to ). He might be right, but don't let it scare you from trying this rum just because you dislike Scotch whisky. Now to the price.. 27 year old Uitvlugt for ~250 euro? That's near impossible to find these days, and this is damn good rum from a historical distillery. Can you find better rum for less? Probably, but this is still worth it's RRP.

Read full review →It's definitely a slow sipper. Something to savour. It's a great start to 2021 for The Duchess with this bottling. If I were more fond of Scotch Whisky than I am Bourbon, I suspect I would enjoy this even more than I have. So that is something to bear in...
