Diamond (Port Mourant) El Dorado Rare Collection <PM> SVW 2001
The surprise here is how much lime and banana sneak into a rum this dark and spicy. It's a Port Mourant/Diamond blend from 2001, 16 years old at cask strength — wet wood, licorice, anise and green apple up front, with mocha, leather, tobacco and dark chocolate on the palate. Oily and warm, with the Diamond adding a caramel sweetness that rounds off PM's herbal, bitter edge.
The community says- Complex and layered
- Great PM/Diamond balance
- But: Bitter, tannic edge

Dark, spicy Demerara blend, PM-led Most tasters love how PM and Diamond play off each other — herbal and dark, yet rounder than a pure PM. A few felt it drifts in different directions and prefer the Albion or Skeldon.

First dominates PM - licorice, green apple, anise, oak and strong mocha. If you let him breathe, comes the SVW portion with caramel and some coconut. Then a nice lovely perfume note at the end. Very complex, balanced, interesting, alcohol barely noticeable.Warm, full-bodied and oily in the mouth. Very good!Epic finish.Great tropical ripened Demerara!!! But I must confess that the 1996 Enmore or the Albion excite me a notch more. 🥲 For PM fans a must.

A highlight in the El Dorado Rare Collection. Pleasant sweetness thanks to the Diamond profile from tropical aging, combined with the rather dry notes of the Port Mourant style – it fits together excellently. Holds up very well against the Velier releases – and maybe even a bit more. Very good.

Being used to high standards of El Dorado, I'm quite disappointed here. It's a herbal style of Guyana rums and it seems it's just not my preferred style. It's a bit sharp, rich and multi-layered. Herbal, floral and molasses expression converge to a typical coffee-cocoa finish.

26.10.2025 Part 2 / Evening Session Today we have an El Dorado Rare Cask online tasting and I've been looking forward to it. I will keep the score and just enjoy the rums and I have all of them on my shelves as well. ---------------- Yet another great rum from El Dorado. They have mastered to make yet another masterpiece from Guyana!

Strong, very aromatic blend, in which, according to my impression, the PM portion predominates, especially on the nose, which I like quite a bit. Really solid rum, full of character, but can not hold a candle to the AN and SWR of El Dorado. Update 2022-11-28: First impression fully confirmed at second tasting.
Review by Tim
On the nose rather PM with hints of round Diamond aromas, in the mouth rather Diamond with PM spices. Overall, a great rum that I like more than a pure PM, especially on the nose, as it seems more accessible and rounder. Mint is dominant on the palate, also very bitter, dry and earthy. Heavy barrel flavors, musty earth, roasty coffee, all sorts of spice and some fruit. Reminds me a little of one or two Jamaican representatives (WP or Hampden).
Review by Giorgio Garotti
A great blend where PM and Diamond match perfectly! The PM comes out dark and oily right away where it keeps the main part of this rum and the Diamond helps balance everything! Nice herbal part that helps to balance! A great rum!
Review by DomM
Summary of the nose: „enhanced PM“ 😁 To me PM is clearly dominating, but enriched by the Diamond component adding some more fruity notes and complexity to the mix.

I've been wanting to test it for a while. It is very good. On the nose, the dying port reigns supreme with its wet wood and doesn't let the diamond show its nose too much... In the mouth, more greediness than expected, the Prune and the chocolate are there, with a whole dose of spices. For me it remains however much less nice than the top trio: Sheldon/diamond CBH/Albion. First of all because it goes a bit in all directions, and it is less pleasant to taste, simply.
Review by Tschusikowsky
Very good overall balance. It is spicy, complex, concentrated aromas, all very harmonious and coherently integrated. Deep flavor profile with good tropical maturity. I liked it very much. The rum scores particularly well with me at the end.

Would never have expected this in my life... Like drizzling a honey banana with sour lime, then throwing tobacco leaves, thyme and mint on top, and then biting into a leather couch! Incredibly complex and very well balanced. Top blend!

9:On the nose, banana, citrus fruits like orange peel, lime, fermented, roasted oak with cappuccino, spicy with anise, cinnamon, some other tropical fruits, green apple, grassy, flowery molasses, sweet with honey, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the molasses is earthy with tobacco, herbaceous, candied, darker with licorice, prunes arise, stronger roastedness with chocolate, caramel, nuts, perhaps walnuts...PM and Diamond hand in hand. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is dark at first with roasted wood notes like chocolate, perhaps dark chocolate, cappuccino, nougat, caramel, roasted nuts, leather, spicy with anise, vanilla, going towards green colours with minty, grassy molasses(slightly bitter), flowery, fresh with tea, earthy with tobacco and again some darker touch with licorice. The fruits are dried with raisins, tropical like banana, mango, citrus, plums. The rum is very complex, on oxidation, the molasses is candied, some menthol joins. 8,9:The finish is long, dry and tannic, complex with roasted wood notes like burnt sugar, caramelized, pastry, mocha, leather, dark chocolate, smoky and spicy, pairing dark molasses with licorice, black tea, earthy with tobacco and dried, citrus, tropical fruits, berries, grapes. Edit:14.8.26

A superb El Dorado blend, with an assembly between Diamond and Port Mourant. The nose is of great complexity, combining the originality and liveliness of Port Mourant with the heavy and expressive roundness of Diamond. We find a damp, fresh woody note sprinkled with flowers and herbs, followed by heavy and indulgent fruits (prune, coconut, banana, citrus on lime and orange zest) all wrapped in spices, tobacco, and an overwhelming sweetness typical of Demerara with big caramel and licorice molasses. A rum both powerful and elegant, subtle and expressive. The attack on the palate is intensely warm and deep. The Demerara profile stands out with spicy heat, bitter notes on cocoa, coffee, licorice and leather, spicy wood, tobacco, and dried and tropical fruits. It’s a profile both rich, generous, and full of charm, showing a lot of intensity. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is very long, sticky with dried fruits and orange zest, warm spices and dark, bitter aromas that coat the palate for a very pleasant tasting experience. Tobacco, dark chocolate, leather, spices, and mocha give a profile both full-bodied and indulgent. Clearly an underrated blend, because the quality of the juice is undeniable and it’s surprising that it’s still possible to find it at this price.

On the nose, licorice, tobacco, mint, aniseed... Plums, orange and green apple. Very spicy... It drops slightly on the palate First some sweetness followed by bitter notes, leather wood mint some pencil.... some plum and chocolate. Fruitiness is rather less to be found, rather dark heavy and spicy are the strengths of this blend.

A successful blend with a focus on PM, I find it very balanced and complex! Wonderful for a relaxed evening

Beautiful blend. Not suitable for beginners. Very oily consistency.

Tasted alongside the 1995 Velier. A much more consensual nose where cask and sweetness dominate. Tropical and yellow fruits, citrus fruits are not far away. Fresh tobacco and molasses add complexity. The first palate is full and aromatic, then a dip forms and the aromas disappear, then reappear, with a long, savory finish marked by oak and woody bitterness. A very different rum from Velier 1995, easier but clearly less spirited.
Review by Skyfly
For me, this is a first-class bottling, especially on the palate. I've rarely had such a broad spectrum of flavors, so hopefully I'll be able to get hold of another bottle. The alcohol is absolutely perfectly integrated!
Review by Basti
There is a lot to discover on the nose. First lots of spice, wood and roasted aromas. Then increasingly fruity components, vanilla and chocolate. I really like it. On the palate subtle fruit and predominantly roasted/spicy aromas. After 2 years back in the glass and I like it significantly better than back then.

Very good blend from the house of El Dorado! Particularly noteworthy are the limes on the nose, which I wouldn't have expected in any of the Marques! Otherwise somehow exactly what you expect from such a blend. Complex, multi-layered, simply delicious!
Review by Serge
Very nice. A fat, swampy sweet PM as it should be complemented by a touch of elegance from the column. Very good 👍
Review by Boletus

Demerara cross tasting 28.04.24 This blend is mainly driven by Port Mourant, diamond adds a sweet layer that in my taste fits great. On the nose, typical PM, leather, wet wood and green apples, plus aniseed and some spices with an underlying sweetness. Drink side again PM but with even more complexity, leather and wood but also caramel and some fruity notes that bring to the finish
Review by Mike H.
Brilliant nose with a lot of banana, spices, wood and a touch of caramel in addition to a slight tobacco note. A little les fruit in the mouth, thi rum is round with complex spicy, wordy notes in addition to caramel, licorice and prune.
Review by Timo Groeger
And finally, Guyana. Also a great rum. It's really very dark, with spice, mocha, liquorice and coffee on the nose. Then liquorice, dark chocolate, leather and a little oak on the palate. Strong.
Review by Manuel
Another very good rum from the El Dorado Collection. But it doesn't reach the top representatives Skeldon, Albion, and Diamond 1998. A very spicy rum that really unfolds only in the mouth. A sweetness in the finish is hardly noticeable.
Review by Jarek
Very tasty blend, I like it because you can clearly recognize both components and they harmonize nicely together. On the nose, the PM notes dominate, on the palate the Diamond part is more in the foreground.
Review by ilRummista
Of the Diamonds in the El Dorado Rare Rum series, this is the one I liked least. Very tobacco nose which is a harbinger of a somewhat "rougher" palate than its other "companions." It is still a good rum but does not stand out like the others.
Review by Christian Rudt
Another exciting El Dorado. A little more interesting on the palate than on the nose. Finish perhaps a little short. But another beautifully complex rum. Would have just tasted something from CBH at the same time. It delivers a little more. But this one is also worth a clear recommendation for all rum lovers.

On the nose, a Guyana profile I'm not crazy about. Licorice, roasted wood and tobacco. On the palate, surprising smoothness and finesse, superb! Caramel and chocolate come first, then reglisse and tobacco melt into this lovely swig! A wonderful discovery for me, as I don't usually like this terroir.
Review by FischeJ
PM überwiegt mMn. Viel Kaffee, Eiche, Würze. Demerara Süße. Mit mehr Zeit evtl mehr Diamond Einfluss.
Review by Mentalo
Very round blend. The PM dominates with its herbal notes, but the more time you give it, the more clearly the caramel SVW comes through. The balance of sweetness and wood also works. Imo a successful blend.
Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
The nose is aromatic, we find banana, spices, tobacco, wet wood ... typical of Port Mourant which takes the lead. But we find a more fruity profile (banana, raisins) which comes from the SVW. The nose is encouraging. On the palate, the disappointment, the wet wood, the smoky-toasted-woody-iodized, the spices ... in fact the flavors that I like so much on the PM are pushed by this SVW. We find caramel, banana, prunes ... which makes this mix unstable. The finish is rather sweet and fruity with a touch of freshness on mint-anise.
Review by Adrianv
Strong profile blend, alcohol is present, it is quite bitter and woody, but I like its strong profile and long finish
Review by Petr Andrysík
For me the best bottle from the Rare Collection. Aroma of dried plum, wood. Full taste. Bitter chocolate, coffee, tobacco, raisins and licorice.
Review by Adrien B
A muscular PM with the SWR. Good but I'm torn since I'm not a big fan of PM.
Review by El Peludo
It's good, but intense. It takes time to dissect and appreciate each aroma. The juice has a lot to tell us.
