Depaz Single Cask 2003

What surprises people first is how round and fruity the nose is — ripe red apple, pear, vanilla and a noble oak — before the palate turns properly dry and spicy. Dried fruit, raisins and a pepper edge carry a long, woody finish. A classic Martinique agricole at a friendly 45%, though the dryness isn't for everyone. One taster found the fruit fading to just overripe dried fruit.

On the nose very complex with wood, somehow apple cider or fruit brandy (pear) and vanilla. The flavors in the background are typical Agricole like leather, chocolate, earth, caramel. In the mouth super dry and spicy sharp, from the fruit is if then only overripe dried fruit left. You have to like, my case is not really!

A very nice rum especially when looking at the price tag. You get a lot for your money here. Fruity and lightly dry on the palate and the empty glass is really nice with more caramel and diet fruit. Would have loved to try it at a higher ABV.

Very round, fruity rum on the nose. Redcurrant and sour cherry, with noble wood and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, we find the markers of the nose with a little pepper, a fine balance. Long-lasting wood and raisin finish.

Very nice nose but, overall, quite classic agricole profile.

Depaz

Avg Rating 8.1/10 over 140 Rums

Depaz is the rum born from a volcano. After Mount Pelee wiped out Saint-Pierre and his entire family in 1902, the orphaned Victor Depaz came back and planted cane on the very slopes that had killed them. The distillery he built in 1917 still stands at the foot of the volcano, and its agricole is among the most decorated on Martinique.
