DDL El Dorado Grand Special Reserve 1992
Burnt sugar, raisins and toasted oak roll out thick and velvety — this drinks nothing like the standard El Dorado line. Members love the warmth and layered dried fruit, but most agree it tastes sweetened, and the finish turns dry, bitter and tannic sooner than a 25-year-old should. An easy, comforting sipper more than a purist's Demerara.

From community reviews · summarized with AI
Sweet, velvety old Demerara that reads dosed Widely enjoyed as a warm, approachable old Demerara, but two catches recur: it reads dosed, and the finish tips into bitter tannins. Funk-and-tar Velier fans want more.

Another retasting and a few points lost. I'd say that this release is a step up from the 1988. Better balanced, more complex and beter rounded. The nose is very fruity from pouring with roasted nuts and coffee. After airing you get some catamel and spice. The palate is complex yet very well balanced and true to the nose with fruits, sweet vanilla and toasted wood. The feeling on the palate is a velvety lightly warm rum. There is a lot of wood on the palate but not too dominant. The finish is medium to long with dried fruit, nuts and wood. Price to quality can be discussed but I think this is a collectible for many.

Very approachable Demerara rum that has clearly been sweetened afterwards. Basically with solid Guyana aromatics, molasses, dark spices, oak wood, tobacco, orange and a hint of blackcurrant embedded in quite a present sweetness. I wonder how this rum would have tasted without sweetening and without reduction?

8,6:On the nose, toasted wood with coffee, cocoa/dark chocolate, roasted nuts, caramelized Demerara sugar, spicy, syrupy, dried fruits with raisins, leather, round, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, copper, sulphur arise, prunes, dried apricots, plums, hints of coconut, some walnuts, vegetal molasses with celery and parsley. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is sweet, balanced with toasted wood notes like caramel, nuts, Demerara sugar, leather, chocolate, coffee, syrupy, spicy, fruits like raisins, prunes, dried apricots, orange peel, pineapple, coconut, as the molasses is thick, earthy with tobacco. 8,5:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with toasted oak, spicy, pairing dried, citrus fruits, plums and candied molasses, dark with licorice, black tea, tobacco. Edit:12.4.26

A round nose with old varnished wood, caramel, wax and dried fruits. This nose resembles that of a Hispanic rum but more complex and less caramelized. The palate is rather lively despite the low ABV, lots of caramel, old varnished wood. A nice acidity, old wood and dried fruits keep this rum going on the length. A nice experience, especially compared to Spanish-style rums. You have to wait for the rum to oxidize in the glass to reveal all its aromas. Yet we are far from the promise of one of the best rums in the world made at the time by the critics of the Rum Ratings site.

This rum did sit in the glass for a good 30 minutes while i was making cocktails. On the nose: Burnt sugar and caramel note as the main note. Toasted. You also get dried fruits like raisins in there. Barrel notes. Little bit of nutty notes. Little bit of coffee and cacao notes. Balanced. Taste: Smooth and velvety mouthfeel. Caramel and vanilla notes. Little bit of pineapples and raisins in there. Woody notes. Finish: Warm. Woody, toasted black tea notes. Spices. Medium finish. Its a easy sipper for sure and i enjoyed sipping this rum, but at that high price i dont see the value for money.

1992, my vintage must be tried! Great concentrated nose, lots of spices as well as berries and ripe pineapple and caramel. On the palate then more bitter than expected, lots of roasted aromas and tannins (burnt caramel, pipe tobacco, bitter orange) but also a pleasant fruit and a medium-long finish. Very impressive, elegant old El Dorado, although not quite worth the money. Reminds me partly of the 2012 vintages because of the slightly nutty and licorice notes in the finish.

Despite the low % a heavy rum. In the end it goes too much into bitter notes without developing the awesomeness of Velier Demeraras. The whole thing would certainly have benefited from 5 years less aging. Technically a great rum.
Review by Henry Davies
It’s a very approachable and incredible easy rum to drink. It really just rolls of the palette with huge amounts of brown sugar and currants. I fear it may be dosed but for a 25 year old rum there is remarkable little barrel influence and it is all sugar and dried fruit on the mouth. The finish is the weakest part of the rum, a bit short and lacking but the body is unmistakably good with real layers and complexity. It is the type of rum you could easily drink a glass off and not even notice. It lacks the excitement of other rums but at this age and taking it at face value it is a great rum

A bit thin, molasses clearly dominates, somewhat flat. I expected a bit more from DDL.

In direct comparison to El Dorado Rare Collection it clearly lack on intensity due to lower ABV. But very complex, velvety rum, complex with dried fruits, caramel, tobacco, nuts, wood, some roasted notes. Good quality sipper with exclusive price...

This is nothing like the regular El Dorado releases. Actually this is not my favorite style, but it's a f*cking good rum. It's like a big hug of warmness with everything you ever liked. A bit of sweet tounge, but here i don't mind. Just gotta wonder how this would be on 53% instead of 43...
