Fiji fans hunting the usual glue-and-rubber funk should know upfront: this one hides it. What you get instead is a rounded, roasted pour — vanilla, burnt sugar, dark chocolate and black tea, with almost no ester bite. Tasters blind-guessed Barbados, Belize, even Foursquare. Update after approx. 3 years: Hardly had the rum in the glass after the first review. The original. Rating of 88 points is certainly one of my most blatant misjudgments. I described the aromatic spectrum correctly, but I can no longer comprehend the rating. This is a fairly shallow column still rum. The typical Fiji flavors are far in the background. Up front it is super soft and pleasing. Today Planteray has bottled several such Fijis, at the time the Duchess was bottled the profile was still unknown. -8 points Unlike the earlier 2004 releases, this Fiji has 12 years of tropical maturation - like the Holmes Cays. Seems much younger than the 17yo TRC (meant positively). At first you don't recognize that it's a Fiji. The nose is very restrained and is more reminiscent of younger Bajan rums. In the mouth, the Fiji flavors slowly come in, especially the planty notes, less the rubber side, making it very complex and balanced. A bit like a dirty Foursquare. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Top!

I would have guessed Barbados or Belize, paired with a little apple and salt. The nose becomes sweeter and sweeter over time. More roasted in the mouth, but this diminishes somewhat with increasing air contact. It becomes more exciting at the end and black tea is added. But somehow it doesn't quite get me. Edit: RumX Advent calendar December 2nd: Already had it in the glass, but still didn't get it... Tasting notes minimally improved, otherwise the assessment here remains the same

Fidji's exchange semester in Barbados. No idea what they did with the 04 vintage. I like this one a lot. Nice complexity with a round mouthfeel. Edit Rum X Advent 2.12.22: would have blindly guessed Barbados again. Fiji where?

Blind 24DaysOfRum Day 2: I had decided on Venezuela and was completely wrong 😆 The nose initially conveys fruitiness and vanilla, followed by a slight barrel influence. Very round on the palate with lots of vanilla, chocolate and barrel influence again. Surprisingly little ester for Fiji. The finish emphasizes the barrel influence again and a few tannins flash up. A beautifully simple rum and really unexpectedly round for Fiji.

#2nd dec RumXCalendar Blind tasting: Nose: roasted, woody, chocolate, caramel, toffee, burnt sugar Palate: woody, burnt sugar, roasted, dried fruits, smoky Finish: long, mocha, dark chocolate, oak, woody The alcohol is integrated very well. Nooo way 😝😝i never thought on a rum from fiji 😶🌫️ My Prediction: Sounds like a typical rum from Belize Approx. 60% Approx. 5-10 years of aging

A very nice Fijian rum. The nose takes a little time to open up with vanilla, spicy and sweet notes, a bit salty, a hint of fruitiness and medicinal notes. On the palate, the attack is intense, spicy, empyreumatic, still salty with some citrus, caramel, burnt sugar and black tea notes. There is a beautiful balance of flavors that evolve over time. The finish, of medium length, continues with smoky notes, black tea and a slight woodiness. You also sense menthol notes, orange and apple. An evolving, complex and seductive rum.

RumX Advent calendar 2022: reminds me a bit of Guyana with fruits, caramel, wood and coconut. On the palate, roasted notes and something salty come in. The finish is more smoky, coffee and black tea. Alcohol is almost too sharp.

I was actually in the mood for somethin Bajan for the first time since long and remembered that I still had the rest this sample. Most atypical Fiji I’ve ever tasted, you would guess it to be Foursquare or something similar. Nonetheless very enjoyable and just wat I wanted now.

Owl sniffing for rum nerds who like to eat roasted almonds at Christmas. Taste only a little fruity and the sweetness comes rather from chocolate and Christmas pastries. Alcohol is very well integrated.

I'm very confused... blind I would have guessed Foursquare, Belize or maybe Trinidad TDL but not Fiji? Where are the typical tropical fruit, herb, and rubber/glue notes? Very strange. All in all still tasty, regardless if it's really Fiji :D After a very long breathing time and the second pour, a few more typical Fiji notes actually come through but still very much in the background, you really have to look for them! Personally, I like it but with Fiji I just expect something different :D

Unfortunately, it didn't really grab me and I would have placed it more in Central America. More interesting on the palate than on the nose and the finish is almost good but overall not my thing. I wouldn't have placed it in Fiji and NEVER as Pot Still.

No. 7 in the Fiji tasting: Certainly not a typical Fiji... more components towards Barbados... at least on the nose! Funk and esters are completely missing! On the palate first a distinct sweetness that later turns into a pleasant sharp spiciness! Maybe some herbs too! I totally miss fruit here! The finish then fits more towards Fiji... light black tea aromas with dark chocolate and something roasted! A successful rum... I like it... but Fiji? You learn something new every day! 😊

When pouring, somehow thought of Panama. The nose then nutty, woody, spicy. Dried fruit, menthol on the palate and yes the finish lingers a bit and I find it quite pleasant. Relatively uncomplicated and nice to sip. To come to Fiji and Pot Still blind seems almost impossible to me 😅

What's wrong with the 2004 vintage from South Pacific? Doesn't taste typical of Fiji at all, but very boring like aged neutral alcohol, towards Foursquare.

Today a Fiji comparative tasting. Participants: - Cadenheads 2003 13yr - Isla Del Ron 2001 19yr - Cave Guildive 2001 15yr - The Duchess 2004 15yr The Duchess, what can I say, probably the most untypical Fiji in the test, or even the one I've ever had in the glass. Am I too soft for the 2001s, no idea. Blind I would probably have sent it to Australia or Barbados. I find it very round on the nose, fine spice, sweetness of burnt sugar and the fruity of citrus and coconut. This continues on the palate. Was it intuition that I already placed them? 🤷♂️ Definitely my number 1 in the ranking, although a completely untypical Fiji. Who knows what it was today!? 😉

A craft-precise, fruit-forward Fiji rum. With a high intensity of ripe fruits. Dominated by pronounced notes of ripe banana and mango with a nice smoky note… delicious…
