Here's the surprise: this cask-strength Caroni actually reads a touch sweet and "crispy" on the palate, not just tar and rubber. Give it 30 minutes to breathe and the classic Caroni rubber-and-tar softens, letting vanilla and dried fruit through. At 64.6% the alcohol stays present, so it's warm and full, with a long finish. Distilled 1998, 20 years old, from the closed Trinidad distillery.

Solid Caroni. After 30 minutes of breathing it opens, but the alcohol remains present. Relatively sweet and "crisp" on the palate. Fun.

... Caroni je destilerie z Trinidadu, produkujici v dobe sve nejvetsi slavy rum, ktery se pridaval v pomeru 1:10 do namornickeho blendu. Byl totiz moc vyrazny a divny nez aby byl prijemny na jazyku. V roce 2000 destilerka skoncila s produkci a byla uzavrena. Az v roce 2010 se objevili degustatori, kteri si rum oblibili prave pro jeho specialni chut. A zajem rostl. Caroni patri do kategorie rumu "you need to try before you die". Doporucuji, Caroni je opravdu unikatni rum.

Not a bad release and the price at release is not too bad in my mind. Light on the nose and warm on the palate. Some may say spicy on the palate but I like it. The dried fruit and vanilla becomes the overall profile very well in my mind.

On the nose I find it more subtle than the previous Duchess Caroni, with a smaller portion of technicality, but it still smells very nice. Tastewise. More fruit, less technicality. But the rubberiness comes through in the finish. Good and interesting.
