The Rum Mercenary Mount Gay Black Label Edition 2000
Sip it neat and give it a minute — the nose is the best part, floral and gourmand with vanilla, ripe banana and a hint of almond paste. One taster even caught a whiff of agricole. The palate turns woody and roasty, and for several members it tips too far into bitter, burnt-coffee territory. The sweetest and liveliest of the many Mount Gay 2000 single casks, but drinkers agree it's short on complexity and fruit.

From community reviews · summarized with AI
Floral nose, roasty palate — an old Bajan single cask Best of the Mount Gay 2000 bunch for a few tasters, thanks to the lively floral nose — but most find the roasty, bitter palate a touch one-dimensional.

We tasted four Mount Gay 2000 releases at the Rum-X Community Tasting. The tasting was very entertaining, but the rums only contributed a small part. Overall, the rums were super similar, with the differences being in the nuances. Personally, I don't like the profile as much, as it simply lacks fruit. In the mouth, I find them better across the board than in the nose. The Mercenary rum is the sweetest of the round, with a grain note reminiscent of bourbon. The fruit on the nose is reminiscent of ripe banana, along with tobacco, tea and vanilla with lightly charred caramel. The mouth is intense and creamy with a nice sweetness. It's super smooth, but unfortunately not particularly complex.

This rum is too closed off for me. Very alcoholic, some herbs and floral notes, some light fruits, which are always pushed out of the foreground by the poorly integrated alcohol. Second tasting -8 points.

Comparison of 3 Mount Gay 2000 last night with two friends: The rum mercenary: a very gourmand nose, on almond paste and some yellow fruits. Super pleasant. The palate follows the nose without surprise. In the end, it’s good but lacks a bit of complexity. The rum cask: no doubt it’s really the same rum with minor differences. Here the wood takes more space on the nose but also on the palate, leading to a slightly bitter finish. This makes the nose nicer on this rum. The duchess: you can clearly feel again that it’s the same rum but the profile is more woody. Surprisingly, it’s better integrated than on the rum cask, more balanced and gourmand. In the end, the best of the three for us last night.

I find the nose very pleasant at first here. Unfortunately, that disappears with the first sip and instead of the floral notes, mostly roasted, somewhat too bitter impressions appear. Which I do like but they seem a bit one-sided.

On the nose, the most floral of the three 2000 Mount Gays I tasted, already with slight hints of Agricole. On the palate, compared to the others, pleasantly balanced; here the woody-spicy notes do not overpower the rest. The finish has a nice note of sweet espresso. Overall, the 2000 Mount Gays are not really my thing, but this one definitely pleases me the most of the three tried.

On the nose for me a classic MG. Fruit, vanilla and some delicate floral, a bit of roast aromas are also present! On the palate a very dominant roasted burnt bitter note that almost covers everything! After a while some espresso and black tea join in! The finish remains roasted burnt! That's simply too little for a good rum!

Out of a small cross tasting: Rum Mercenary is the most lifely with some floral notes while the other three have a more similar profile. Rum Cask is very well balanced an approchable. RumClub feels the most intense with some funky notes. The Duchess is the most elegant out of the bunch and my personal winner.

Basically not wrong. Vanilla and coconut, light roasted aromas and bright fruits.
