I haven't had this Neisson in my glass for a long time. Since the first tasting, I have increasingly turned my interest in rum towards agricole. I was really looking forward to this Neisson today. Perhaps my expectations were simply too high. A good Neisson with typical agricole notes and a very dominant herbal, earthy and medicinal note in the finish, which I don't like at all. Nevertheless, a good rum.

Overall a very smooth, elegant and delicate Agricole as all rum I’ve tasted from Neisson. The Neisson distillery was founded by two brothers in 1931 and are still family owned, just one out of two independent family owned distilleries in Martinique. In 1952 they installed a copper Savalle still in production. Today they have 49 hectares to grow their cane of which 4 is organic which make them self-sufficient with raw material. Neisson produces just Agricole and presses its juice in an old mill from 1937. Fermentation with own yeast strains takes place in stainless steel vats up to 5 days, which is very long and the maximum time allowed by AOC. The rum taken out from distillation on the old Savalle column has a strength of 73% whereafter it’s placed in stainless steel tanks where it’s blended and diluted before bottled respectively put in barrels for aging. This XO rum is a blend of rums aged 9, 11 and 12 years old, aged in French oak barrels and ex-American Bourbon barrels.

Though usually expensive, Neisson really knows how to make rum. Well balanced and a lot of flavours despite the relative low ABV. Fruity with spices and a light floral note. There is a light nutty note which is even clearer in the empty glass.

The nose first expresses an elegant woodiness. Vanilla, citrus and cane. Very soft entry on the palate. The citrus gradually coats the palate before the woodiness takes over and lets heavier aromas express themselves: leather, tobacco, chocolate. Here is a rum that lives up to its reputation. Superb!

Pleasant nose, not particularly intense, but nice Agricole mix of fruits, plants, sugar cane, spices, toffee and some coffee. Typically spicy, dry, sharp, tart and earthy in the mouth, which you have to like, otherwise the experience is a bit overwhelming. Dark chocolate and some dried fruit come in on the finish. Lots of spice always present. There are better Agricoles.

The nose is extremely charming with notes of honey and a slight pepperiness characteristic of Martinique. There's also dried tobacco. Its long time in oak barrels is felt with a refined and classy woodiness, without dulling the sun-soaked sugarcane. There are also other exotic fruits, a bit of juicy mango, and apricot peyi with its tangy side. The alcohol is felt more intensely than in the old one, but blended into powerful cashew nut notes after some airing time. The palate is immediately lively and never boring. Right away, strong spices: a very present black pepper, camphor covering the palate, cinnamon. The woodiness has a slightly burnt side that pairs so well with nutmeg markers, with that honey returning in the second mouthfeel. The balance is incredibly precise, without frills. This rum is a gentleman's rum. You imagine yourself in a library with a fireplace and soft leather armchairs. I regret not wearing a tweed suit for this tasting. This tasting is both a great satisfaction and a huge disappointment. The disappointment comes from the fact that you obviously have to spend a significant amount to get a rum aged more than 3 years worth it at Neisson. While the whites and their ESBs are excellent rums and unanimously praised. Is this XO exceptional? Does it surpass other Martinican aged rums in quality? I don't think so. That explains the score.

For a given occasion 😉habe I made a few tastings with Agricole from Martinique, Guadeloupe and Marie Galante. Today it's Neisson's turn. Hard to spot a dieger of the Neisson comparison (RX 7592, 8402, 14424, 89). The XO is perhaps the most common of the four.

Very complex with a lot to discover both in the nose and mouth. The 48% suites it very well. Somewhere hidden in a corner is the faint impression of a plum brandy.

Amazing Neisson, this is just the kind of aged agricole I like. Sugarcane, nougat and chocolate are the main traits I find, with an enormous persistence. The reduction surely impaires a little bit the profile, but it's still great.

After several tastings of this Neisson XO, I perhaps expected a bit more. However, it remains a good agricole rum. In my opinion, it lacks a little something specific to really stand out, especially considering its quite high price. For this price, there are other gems with more character, which explains my somewhat low rating. That said, it remains a product of good quality!

Here I finally taste the famous Neisson XO. I better understand the remarks I have read here and there: "precise", "surgical", "craftsman"... It is indeed an extremely balanced rum that creates a very coherent whole. You find a bit of everything, it's good, you enjoy it. But one could say it lacks a little bit of madness in all this to make it a truly remarkable rum.

A magnificent color, a nose of dried fruit and vanilla that makes you want to dive in! On the palate you immediately find the wood and the barrel then it shifts to notes of tobacco and leather. A long finish on oak. I find the alcohol very well integrated. In conclusion, a very good rum even if I prefer a Galion which is less old but more spirited.

New tasting after the Depaz prestige XO, I lower my rating a bit. A very beautiful color, pleasant on the nose, wood, a bit of still green hazelnut. Well integrated on the palate, a bit of very dark chocolate, beautiful complexity of the cask. A bit more on the bitterness than in memories. Very very beautiful length.
