Velier Caroni 5th Employees Deodat „Breeze“ Manmohan HTR 1996
The surprise here is how sweet it drinks for a Caroni. The classic tar, rubber and "car workshop" notes are all present, but a big natural caramel sweetness sits on top, with vanilla, leather and a minty finish. Several tasters call it rounder and more balanced than its 1996 siblings. At 66.7% it needs a long time open — don't rush it.

How does Velier Caroni 5th Employees Deodat „Breeze“ Manmohan HTR 1996 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Sweet, tarry Caroni for patient sippers A loved 1996 Caroni that leans unusually sweet and caramel-heavy. Most find it elegant and well-integrated for the ABV; a few say the sweetness costs it depth, or the wood runs too hot.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Already on the rather tart side with rich woody notes, licorice, leather and herbs. It scratches, it groans, you are challenged but rewarded - in the end, the typical vintage profile of the 1996 Caronis with the subtle sweetness and the perfectly embedded rubber and tar notes is clearly recognizable and offers a taste profile with high intensity and complexity. There are more balanced 1996s, but the release is still at a high level thanks to the multi-layered aromas. Caroni for advanced drinkers.

A good rum, but too much wood for my taste.
Review by Mirco
A remarkable Caroni with a pronounced funk, rough tar and rubber tones and an earthy depth. There are also dry herbs, some licorice and a hint of dark fruit. The alcohol is well integrated and carries the aromas clearly and powerfully. Not a simple rum, but one with real character and substance.

I'm not surprised anymore by Caroni releases by Velier. This 1996 is magnificent with round notes perfectly balancing typical Caroni profile. Astonashing rum 😍
Review by Joachim Guger
Wonderfully solid nose, polish and wood maturity en masse. With a little water, liquid Fishermans Friends. Not very dirty. Oily and dense in the mouth. A chemical factory with caramel. Spicy and complex. Then wood and caramel on the finish. A great Caroni. Tar and the burnt notes, however, very restrained. More of this please...
Review by Oliver
Rather restrained on the nose. Too bitter and astringent on the palate.

More balanced than the Roop

Wow, this one was very different and kind of sweet compared to all other Caroni's I have tried! The nose is wonderful with the typical tar and rubber notes with roasted oak on top. Fruits, and vanilla follows and I also get a bit of nuts in there. The palate is very well balanced when thinking about the ABV. Complex, sweet and oily with roasted oak topped with some rubber and tar. Fruit, vanilla, leather and caramel make the palate complete. Pretty sweet for a Caroni, but I know they would never add anything to sweeten the rum. The finish is long and has roasted oak, rubber and caramel to it. The caramel is very present in this particular release.
Review by Martin Augustin
A clear, albeit restrained Caroni nose. Tar, polish, menthol, but also caramel and vanilla flow towards you. The taste is then beautifully dirty. Lots of tar and rubber. But also caramel, espresso and pepper. Long finish, surprisingly sweet. A wonderful Caroni.

Great Caroni and one of the best 96 I've ever had in the glass. Absolutely cool matured, in the nose a dream and in the mouth with the best I've ever had. Outstanding

2 drops of water, 2 hours in a glencairn glass before the tasting. It's a beautiful Caroni, very elegant and deep. The best bottle of the 5th employees release. Gorgeous!

Tasted together with the Roop. The Breeze is a little rounder and more caramel-like on the nose and somehow evokes associations with floor wax (from those 'weird' tubes that used to be available). The Roop is somewhat fresher and more pungent, with bergamot and pine wood in the background. While both are still rather restrained on the nose, the workshop notes on the palate are brute, simply delicious 🤤 I also find the Breeze a little more balanced on the palate. The alcohol is not quite as well integrated in the Roop.

I like it much better on the second try. Very intense and spicy. Great Caroni.
Review by Simon Leroux
Charming on the nose but too strong on the palate, to be reserved for fine tastings. A little disappointing.

In the smell the rum seems quite sweet, caramel and some spices I perceive the most. You wouldn't guess the 66.7% here. On the taste then some tar, spices and caramel. Few fruity components and a bit too much punch for a top rating.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

The Breeze shows the typical Caroni characteristics (car workshop, rubber, tar). However, not as pronounced as one might expect from a 1996 vintage. Here also come red fruit notes, vanilla, dried fruits. It needs a long resting time.
Review by Filip Šikula
The sixth employee of the evening. On the nose, first polish, later sweet caramel tones. On the palate, it's a complex experience: wood, leather, polish, espresso, creating an oily and dense impression in the mouth. The finish is long and you really don't want it to end. Gorgeous.
Review by Djehey
A slightly different profile from the other 2 1996s we tried. More focused on empyreumatic aromas. The fruit on the palate reminds me more of blackcurrant. The similarity between a Caroni and a TDL is quite clear.
Review by JFehr
Quite sweet (caramel sweetness), fruity, not so complex. Classic 96 Caroni notes. Finish too short.
Review by Schleepie
Also a great Caroni. Fresh, quite sweet. Very minty on the finish. Fruit comes through. The dirt accompanies the rum from nose to finish but remains in the background. The oily consistency is great. Very nice bottling.

Tar, salty caramel, overripe peach, rosé water on nose. It needs to open up as well for a long time, don’t rush it, take your time. Of course it’s heavy, for sure it’s bold and concentrated. But there are something floral and minty on background…
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
I like its salty and rubbery side, but a bit too much alcohol at the end of the palate. The bottle was new, to see with a bit of airing, it should be really nice.
Review by Buddudharma
Once again a great 1996 Caroni, where the high maturity and the very pronounced natural sweetness set the tone. This is both strength and weakness: on one hand it makes the profile wonderfully elegant and easy-drinking, on the other it takes away some depth and complexity. Overall still a sensationally successful rum, which nevertheless loses out compared to the John Eversley.
Review by kargoles
A dirty nose worthy of a Caroni. Between elegance and wildness. The alcohol remains present on the palate but at 66.7 degrees, this finesse is almost surprising. The fruit is slightly roasted with a tar and leather return. The blackcurrant is light and leaves all the space to tertiary aromas that jostle. A length that lasts on the empyreumatic and caramel. Very very good.

On the nose, this Caroni shows restraint. In the mouth, however, it is already very pleasing. It is extremely sweet. Caramelllllll. If you didn't know that Luca Gargano would never add artificial sugar, well, you could almost question it here... After a bit of time in the glass, this rum softens. The alcohol is elegantly integrated. If the rum did not cost a small fortune, this Caroni would definitely go into my collection.
