Velier Hampden The Younger LROK 2016
Most people rate this a great first step into Hampden: banana, pineapple and that classic glue-and-varnish funk, without the punch of the cask-strength LROKs. The recurring gripe is body — several tasters find it a touch thin and the finish short for a Hampden, likely down to the young age and 47%. Still, funk fans keep coming back to it.

This is a great bottling from Velier to an affordable price. The nose is fruity with aromas of esters, pineapple, banana and citrus. At the palate it’s fruity, funky and spicy with flavors of esters and pineapple. The finish is long, fruity, spicy, fresh, dry and woody.

Nice rum although the overproof remains clearly the best.

Great nose . After taste like cognac. Didn’t like it solo but good mixed.

Wonderful rum to dive into the world of Hampden. Due to the reduction a real easy sipper.
Review by Vincent D
Typical Jamaican, both in smell and taste. Varnish, esters, very ripe fruit on the nose. no big surprise on the palate, except for its freshness. short finish, but it's a young rum, so not surprising in my opinion. Nice to start a Hampden line-up. Edit 05/02/2022: every time I come back to it, I tell myself that this first batch of Younger is a real success. I haven't had the opportunity to taste anything this good for the same price in all of 2021. Gosh, it's a good way to start a little tasting. Edit 09/2023: tasted again and sensations confirmed

mega fruity, oily and intense, yet a tasty easy sipper for a Jamaican. a clear upgrade to the previous Hampden estate 46%. PLV top! out the back it is a bit very dry and woody becoming, with a bit of a short finish, but then gets an exciting slightly salty note and strawberry jam along with just the right amount of esters. Here a barrel strength would be really exciting. Tip: this is an absolute board for a Kingston Negroni!🙌

Thinking about the cost this is a very good rum. Fruity and funky from the nose to the finish. I really like the clove that comes in the finish.

8,4:On the nose, esters, solvents, varnish, funky, fermented tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, red fruits, briny olive, slightly roasted, nutty wood, spicy, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, green apple is out, grassy molasses, some rubber, marzipan, vanilla, slight smokiness and confectionery. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is funky with esters, rubber, tropical fruits like pineapple and banana, red fruits, briny olive, grass, the wood is slightly roasted with cream toffee, pastry, cookie dough, spicy, dry.The molasses is sweet with honey, slightly herbaceous, some hints of licorice are present. 8,1:The finish is medium long, dry and tannic, creamy, fruity, spicy with allspice, oaky and smoky. Very nice fruity smellIn the mouth velvety soft, also reminds of the taste a bit of honey. Paired with a nice fruit, direction citrus, green apple, but also mango and the typical pineapple-banana combination.Overall a fresh Hampden version, I like it, but is a bit too perfumed for my taste.
Review by Thunderbird
Given the price and age a good rum !The only thing that bothers a bit...for me he is too light or thin
Review by zabo
The Younger remains and is simply a good mixer, both in MaiTai and in CubaLibre. It's also usually better on its own than some others. But I still prefer it as a mixer. For me, it's simply a rum that belongs in the household.

I have already tried the longer aged cousin and found it a bit overpriced in regards to value for money. This is a bit cheaper, and a bit more raw. The nose is quite present, I am sipping this on the balcony and smelled it from the glass on the table already when standing in the door. Ananas and Esters are very present, but also a surprising strong alcoholic part. All of this translates well onto the palate, but I found it quite sharp with the alcohol, honestly, for its "low" ABV compared to other barrel proof offerings. A minimal drop of water improved this a bit, the Ananas and a bit of rotten fruit get pronounced and the sharpness mellowed. It stays, however, very dry, what I think is a general characteristic of LROK. The finish is medium to long, and has finally a woody note.
Review by Felix Reiber
A tasty, fruity and uncomplicated Hampden. The classic Hampden profile is found on the nose. Lots of fruit like pineapple and orange peel as well as nice esters and varnish notes. A distinct sweetness then emerges on the palate, followed by honey, tropical fruits, esters and spicy tones. Everything is accompanied by a great freshness. The finish is medium to short with nice fruity aromas, esters and wood notes as well as a slight pepperiness. Very good value for money.
Review by Eugene227
Distinctive Jamaica funk. Overripe banana, pineapple, esters, glue, and spicy notes really stand out. Despite its intensity, it remains surprisingly well-balanced. Might be a bit challenging for beginners, but for Hampden fans, it's a recommendation with a strong price-enjoyment ratio.
Review by Tim
Beautiful round nose with lots of fermented and sour fruit, complemented by floral notes such as flower and tobacco. The LROK pith is very complex due to its ester composition! In the mouth it changes to a dry, spicy, smoky and woody experience complemented by fruit. Finishes with peppery spiciness, sweet sugar cane, spice, sour fruit again and tobacco. Overall, I like this quite a bit.
Review by Joachim Guger
Typical Hampden nose. Well accessible and balanced.Crisp and funky in the mouth. As I said, typical Hampden and well accessible.
Review by abaker-rum
On the nose you can easily tell this is a funky Jamaican rum with the pineapple and banana that carry throughout the palate and finish. To me the best part this rum is the finish as the rum mellows into caramalized banana with wood and vanilla notes
Review by TheRhumhoe
A young Hampden with a tamed profile, whose nose reveals typical aromas of esters, solvents, varnish and glue, with ripe tropical fruits and tangy citrus touches. This fermented side is accompanied by a subtle spicy touch. A soft and sensual profile. The attack on the palate is smooth and controlled. Exotic fruits and esters dominate, before giving way to a very subtle spicy and woody touch. The light and soft side of the rum results from some dilution, but the profile remains dry and easy to approach. The Mark LROK still makes a little impression on the palate, which is quite appreciable. The finish continues the palate's theme, with some tannin notes, spices (cloves) and floral freshness notes. A Hampden adapted for the general public, to introduce Jamaican rum to everyone's palate.

VSGB 😙Nose: very fruity with ripe pineapple, lemon and green apple and at the same time vinegar, has almost something of sweat or older socks. This is then matched by the buttery, slightly going into the cheesy. It's a bit soapy, towards polish and has a tart sweetness of maple syrup, yet hiding behind the sock.Palate: less fruity than on the nose, more metallic, bitter, with lime zest and some iodine. Very dry. A slight umami note with some pepper. Goes in the direction of resin. In the medium-long finish remains lime zest, umami and some green tea. At the very end even slightly eel or mackerel (can that be? I must check another time!)LROK is in itself a nice Mark, however, seems the here by its young age and the reduction to 47% somewhat immature....
Review by Morgan Garet
2nd tasting (blind) after a 1st where I had not appreciated more than that. The nose attacks on solvents and smoke then after a good aeration arrive finally more nice notes of pineapple, vanilla of sugar and a buttered side, of what to make a good cake.In mouth we find the same greedy notes but the banana replaced the pineapple and a minty freshness includes the whole and persists on the final.A 2nd tasting which makes me change opinion on this rum, it needed a long aeration.
Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
The nose is very fine and fresh, it is rather floral in addition to the typical Hampden markers (banana). We recognize the LROK touch of the white tasted just before. In the mouth it is powerful and funky. It's heavy on tropical fruits (pineapple), leather and a little coffee. The finish is not long enough on spices and some empyreumatic notes. Nice entry-level rum to discover Hampden. Rather round, fruity profile with some spice that is neither too intense nor too fine. I find this selection really nice to start a Hampden line-up.
Review by Jakob
Nice entry-level rum from Jamaica - rounded profile of fruit and some spice, neither too thin nor too intense. Compared to cask-strength LROKs naturally a bit more restrained, but the balance suits the brand well.
Review by Lukas Jäger
Hampden Light! Actually the beautiful palette Hampden flavor, but at the same time very moderate. Seems like a little boy on a bike who wants to follow the big boys on motorcycles. Nice aroma, great creaminess, perfect to start into the Hampden world. For Hampden-affine rum drinkers so probably rather uninteresting.
Review by Timo Groeger
This Hampden was already a class better. What else can I say about Hampden? Tropical fruits, naturally banana and pineapple, as well as esters. Here also solvent on the nose, plus a very funky palate.
Review by Skyfly
A good classic that brings all the typical markers. For me personally, the rum is a bit too thin despite the many aromas – it feels a bit watered down without actually being watered down. The value for money is of course great.
Review by Serge
Compared to the 2010 LROK a bit fruitier but with less vanilla and wood. The 2010 LROK has (if you disregard the price) the nose just ahead, but the younger is clearly the better deal for the money.
Review by Gregor
Very nice. This product shows that it does not always need 20 or 30 years of storage to be einguter rum. Tler Jamaican with everything it needs
Review by Pavel Spacek
Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery, which produces alcohol for perfume as well as rum. In all the rums from this distillery you will taste wild esters, after which your whole organism will soak up the smell of golden tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the "must try before you die" rums
Review by Leo Krüper
Solid entry-level Hampden. Has everything you want. Very nice nose.

Just excellent
Review by Alessandro
A great classic Hampden, a bit thin compared to other marks but still enjoyable. It's a very young rum, and the taste, especially the finish, reflects that. In my opinion, the quality-price ratio makes it a good purchase. Recommended.

Very nice result from hampden... Impressive
Review by RumisRum
Nose is great, typical hampden funk. Taste is good, although I find the nose is more satisfying. Also the taste improved after I tasted it again two weeks later.
Review by SaibotZtar
nice entry into the Hampden world vorallem the price makes it attractive.... Fruity and light ester notes .... hardly corners and know.
Review by Benoit Mahe
An easy and pleasant Hampden, good gateway to Jamaica at a nice price.
Review by Rowald Sweet Empire
Loving it. Pretty well balanced. Tropical fruits. Funk. Esters. Oak. Yoghurt. Peppery finish. Creamy/acidic. Classic Hampden. 5 years but plenty to discover. In terms of price quality a better catch than the 2010 LROK.
Review by mto75
in direct comparison with the Hampden 2010 LROK ('the older') I must say that I like the older but clearly better. I get an image as if the younger one had been torn open from its hibernation and bottled. He does not seem so right for me, just the fresh (green) notes are not so my thing here ... In the price league I would prefer the 'standard Hampden' (46%/8 years) to the 'the younger'.
Review by DosenZorn
Full clap Hampden funk/ester. Oodles of tropical fruit, sour apple, solvent with great intensity. Not as intense as the Overproof or some cask strength Hampdens, yet after opening the bottle the room smells like the BSR organic waste incinerator near my workplace mixed with fruit section of my favorite Asian market. I love it! Very smooth on the palate, also insane fruit flavors, a bit of marzipan and even if the nose didn't suggest it a nice amount of barrel/wood that supports the esters great. Here, a slightly higher ABV would probably be positive. Overall, however, one of my favorite rums and for me better than the 8y 46% Velier Hampden. Can you have a good conscience a few bottles of.
Review by V. Chbrd
A young and fiery Jamaican who has a lot to express with a mix of tropical fruits and spices wrapped in honey... for a result, as expected, really funky 😎 In short, this is a reference in the world of Jamaican rums.
Review by Filip Šikula
This rum is something every Jamaica lover should have in their home. It costs a few crowns, it can be on its own, put in a drink or panettone, but most importantly, it's the rum you pour for a visitor when you want to show them what Jamaica is and you don't want to kill them.
Review by Speedflo
Way too light Hampden, delicious HD notes on the palate and nose but the rum would suit >60% well.
Review by Sebastian Kornett
Clearly better than the 46% Estate. What a nose. As if you were smelling a higher percentage. In the mouth nice and sweet are very intense but unfortunately a bit thin. The finish could also use more length.
Review by TheJackDrop
Fin de salon, c'est dur dur.. peut être qu'il me faut le gouter a nouveau dans les bonnes conditions. Un peu léger , globalement. En resume, mes notes de degutation : Au nez : Ananas, Ester En bouche : Ananas, Ester

Excellent value for money to discover Jamaica at Hampden with a light rum!
Review by benoit burger
Very good jamaican, very fruity and funky, length is a little bit too short (probably because of its young age), quality and price are top.
Review by Ysmir
Poured from a bottle that's been open for ~2 years, and is 80% full. A good and (comparatively) easygoing Hampden. Classic overripe tropical fruits and varnish, paired with some oak undertones in the background. Unfortunately the mouthfeel and finish length leaves me with unmet expectations for the Rum. I think if it was proofed just a tad higher, it would resolve these complaints. Oh well.
Review by Master P
Very pleasant, easy sipper
Review by Fuwi
Nice, affordable Jamaican that is ideal for beginners to dive into the world of esters. Not too heavy, fresh and with a pleasant spice and exciting aromas to get into, also suitable as an easy sipper due to the drinking strength, I have to try it in a Mai Tai, could bring a good funk.
Review by Henry Davies
It has a great nose, alcoholic notes, Jamaican funk, a little bit more brash than other Hampden’s and mango which is not what I typically get. On the mouth it is more restrained, some spice and pineapple, and softer than expected with the ABV but a bit less exciting and layered than the Great Houses. Finish is medium and refined, orange peel and dryer than expected. It’s a good rum, but the body and finish don’t quite deliver the promise of the mouth. To me it’s better than the 8 year Hampden but not massively and not as good as the 11 year old LROK

Read full review ›First of all, I want to say that I am extremely grateful that the Hessey family shared these rums with us. They are really incredibly good rums, where you can feel that classic touch of the Jamaican distillery Hampden Estate. However, they are a bit more refined and overall they make truly great complex rums that I really grew fond of.
