Uitvlugt Kill Devil Bottled for Rum Rarities 1997

Most tasters land on the same read: a distinctly herbal Uitvlugt, more delicate than dark. Fresh herbs, olive brine, peach skin and pear sit over dry oak and a graphite streak, with lychee coming through on the palate. A few call it a touch thin at first, but nearly everyone agrees it deepens with time in the glass. Not the boldest Guyana, but a fine, easygoing one.

RumX-Adventskalender, 09.12.2021, blind.

RumX-Adventskalender, 9.12., blind, Erster Eindruck: salzig, Honig, BlackRock? Mitte 50%.

Very light yellow, with almost clear reflections. Very nice, thick legs Nose: very delicate..that the first thing that comes to my mind..then peach skin and pears, maybe coconut shavings..I also sense a touch of sweet spices, like cinnamon. Mouth: lychees..oh God, my mind flew right at my youth, when a I used to finish my teenage dinners at the local Chinese restaurant with a coupe of those syrupy lychees! Then again pears, with a hint of young wood and a mild spicy flavor. A little bit astringent, mildly warm. Finish: medium, more on the woody and spicy, with that lychee flavor in background

Herbs are intensely present as soon as it is poured. There is also strong oak, olive water and peach. On the palate, lychee preserved in maple syrup is added. The bitterness of the oak that I like so much only unfolds in the finish. For a better rating, the alcohol should be more ideally integrated, which is particularly present in the length of the finish and is underpinned with a herbal spiciness.

RumX advent calendar 9.12.21: This time I have the Uitvlugt erkannt👏🏻🤪 Nose: initially restrained but with time it reveals a very diverse profile. A lot of lychee comes through in the mouth. Overall very fine, very complex and delicate. Perfect alcohol. What I like here is the sweetness, which rounds off the profile well. I found this a little lacking in the older representatives I've tasted so far.

Uitvlugt

Avg Rating 8.5/10 over 170 Rums

Uitvlugt is a ghost with the best reviews in Guyana. The distillery closed in December 1999 and its stills were hauled to Diamond, leaving the stillhouse in ruins, yet aged Uitvlugt rum is among the highest rated on RumX, with one Cadenhead 1964 reaching 9.9/10. For four decades this was the transfer point where every wooden still in the country waited before moving on.
