Valinch & Mallet Foursquare The Spirit of Art 2007

Sipped neat, this drinks like classic Foursquare: coconut, dried fruit, toffee and vanilla with oak and a little spice underneath. At 58.3% the alcohol sits surprisingly well integrated, so it stays round rather than hot. Fans call it one of the fruitier V&M Foursquares. A few note it lacks depth and a real signature, and one caught a glue (UHU) whiff.

The community says
  • Extra fruitiness
  • Well-integrated alcohol
  • Keep in mind: Lacks real depth

09.03.2025 Retasting with a couple of friends at our quarterly meet up. ____________________________ Got this one today and I can only recommend it. A rare bottle though. Besides making a great rum the bottle itself is a piece of art. The back of the bottle has a beautiful unique piece of art.

Just behind the Wealth Solution 1998. An unexpected glue note (UHU) on the nose and in the finish.

Spicy, cinnamony, vanilla with tropical (sour) fruits. Very round with the right amount of wood and roasted aromas. In addition to the perhaps too tame nose, there is another weak point in the mouth and finish, where the rum could be more intense and complex. Nevertheless, overall you get a good to very good rum for a price that is probably too expensive. The ECS bottlings are therefore clearly preferable.

Coconut, dried fruits and spices on the nose. Also on the palate nothing really new. Overall a classic FS profile without edges and corners, but also without real highlights. On par with the ECS releases.

Taste-wise absolute Foursquare DNA for me. It lacks a bit of depth and a unique feature. However, perfect taste balance. I like it very much. Dangerously easy to drink.

Valinch & Mallet offers us here a general and rich Foursquare, whose nose is very round, dominated by the indulgence of fruity aromas (coconut, tropical fruits) and pastry notes (toffee, butter caramel). The woody and spicy side stands out with elegance and offers a nice structure to a rum that can be described as quite typical of its terroir. The attack on the palate is very round, a bit vinous (cask?), fruity on dried and exotic fruits, enhanced by spices, tobacco and wood, with a melting warmth on the caramel. A very drinkable rum with very well integrated alcohol. In the finish, we find a warm rum edged by spices, caramel and chocolate, before giving more weight to the wood and fruits. A nice Foursquare that, without creating surprise, wants to be generous, structured and mastered.

Nice full strength with heavy, pleasing notes of wood, coconut, spice, tobacco and dried fruits.

Unfortunately falls somewhat short of my expectations, but also behind the two younger Veliers tasted in parallel (Principia and Sassafras). A really pleasant, quite typical Foursquare, but in my opinion lacking some depth. Maybe I'll give it a second chance. By the way: the external design of the bottle is really phenomenal and classy!

Not quite as round, harmonious and mild as I would like. Still not my favorite Foursquare though.

The best FS bottled by V&M so far. Still a lot of fruit, this time added to FS typical profile which is still easy to find. A bit better than the regular millesime I used as a comparison (2008), thanks to much more fruitiness.

I generally like Foursquare, it's easy to drink, but this one is clearly above the others. A delight 😍 a real candy. Nice roundness, super well balanced, complex, and superb length 👌 A well-deserved 90 score 😍

This my third sampling. I wanted to wait a little to let the bottle «breath» a little and six weeks seem to be sufficient. I appreciate this rum much more now than when it was freshly opened. Still nothing to write home about and a bit overpriced in my opinion.

Foursquare is a distillery from Barbados producing amazing rums for everyday sipping. It's a rum especially appreciated by rum lovers who are fed up with sugar and looking for a smooth, sweet rum full of coconut, vanilla, chocolate and caramel. Simply pleasant and not aggressive flavors.
