Berry Bros & Rudd Caroni Trinidad Rum (The Nectar) 1997

Sip this one neat and give it time in the glass — several tasters say it opens up after an hour. You get the classic Caroni markers of tar, rubber and leather, but softer here, wrapped around ripe tropical fruit, banana and a bit of chocolate. One member calls it a "pleasant easy sipper." The catch: a few find it flat, lacking the depth die-hards want.

The community says
  • Classic Caroni tar/leather
  • Ripe tropical fruit
  • But: Lacks depth

The nose is restrained. The typical Caroni associations are recognizable, but lack some depth and complexity. On the palate, a nice composition of dirty Caroni notes and a pleasant sweetness. Here the rather weak impression from the nose is made up for. The alcohol is well integrated. Bottom line, a good Caroni to enjoy an evening with. Postscript: after an hour of breathing, the nose unfolds and a great dark, toasty, chocolatey aroma with a nice sweetness emerges. The palate also makes a nice jump forward. Great creaminess. Definitely let it breathe. One is rewarded!

I like quite well ... not as dirty as often with Caroni (clear many love it exactly therefore) I find the interplay of the typical Caroni notes (rubber, leather, tar, etc.) with the yet beautifully fruity character great. Hints of chocolate and dried fruit.

In meinen Augen kein sonderlich interessanter Caroni.

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
