Thompson Bros. Hampden Jamaican Rum JMH (Bar Tre) <>H 2001
One taster called this "what a nose" — grilled pineapple, wild esters, marzipan and a whiff of solvent. This 2001 Hampden JMH from Thompson Bros. leans tropical and spicy rather than brutally funky: mango, banana, candied fruit, pepper and pimento, with the 61% surprisingly well tucked in. A few found it too sour; most just call it a lot of fun.
- Grilled pineapple
- Well-integrated alcohol
- Long intense finish

Very exciting 2001 HD <>H. At the beginning I really had a bit of smoke in the nose. Too bad that he has been tested so little so far. Now off into the May Tai with the thing 🇯🇲

beautiful 2001 JMH / <>H. All kinds of fermented fruit on the nose 🤩(pineapple, papaya), vanilla, not too wild with the esters. Very spicy on the palate, candied fruit, slightly peppery, allspice.

15.07.2021 Nothing better than meeting people for dinner and rum when you're on holiday. Notes Light in colour. Nose Light wood, faint roasted, fruity, banana, overripe, light glue. Palate Naturally sweet, light wood, roasted, fruity, citrus, medium dry, polish. Finish Long, naturally sweet, wood, dried fruit.

Day 10 RumX Calendar The rum was almost like a 2009 New Yarmouth on the nose. In terms of taste, I would have rated it more as a DOK. Nice piece, which was selected once again. I would never have tasted it like this.

Very Interesting HD .In the nose restrained some Grilled Pineapple...Mango Banana...little ester.Alcohol well integrated. On the palate.... Light sweetness some bitter notes some smoke and fruit again little ester . Finish a lot of bitterness and gaaaanz late banana.

RumX-Adventskalender 10.12.2023 Had guessed a DOK. Lots of esters and marzipan, which I really enjoy, but too sour for me overall. I don't give it 80 points.

Nose adds banana and faint spicey notes like pepper and pimento. Least rotten notes tending (comparable) more to fresh fruits in my mind. Very intensive on the palate with nice (fresh) fruit notes and some marzipan. So far I liked all out of the 2001 <>H batch. Looking at a close field: KD > TB > RC-M > RC

Another 2001 Hampden. The ester and wood notes are somewhat less pronounced than in other bottlings of the vintage. Marzipan, mango, pineapple. Alcohol is well integrated. There are better bottlings, but you generally can't go wrong with a 2001,

#24DaysOfRum2023 - Day 10 On the nose very lively and zingy flanked by copious amounts of phenol. Opens classically fruity with lemon juice, unripe pineapple and plantains counterbalanced with lighter marzipan and barrel notes. Then the complexity ramps up with exotic spices and hot glue gun, before dissipating into a phenol-driven profile of campfire smoke, cigar ash and chamomile tea. A well-balanced palate opens sweet with yellow banana, berrymix and molasses. Then lightly complex with esters, allspice and green tea before crème fraîche and popped corn mellows it out. Lemony on the backdraft. Beautiful medium long finish with a plethora of discoverable notes equally well-balanced as the palate. Very complex, yet very accessible for what is considered high ester.

Now that's what we call a funky nose! Esters galore, very ripe fruit, pineapple, solvents. In the mouth, it's intense. The fruit is complemented by the sharp spiciness of the chili pepper. Dry, strong, tangy. Really cool.

RumX advent calendar - day 10 A nice rum from Hampden with continental ageing, with all the traits I expect from this kind of rum. Despite relatively high esters count, that you feel in the nose, it is pretty approachable when drinking
Review by Piotr Ignasiak
RX calendar day 10 Intense in the ester department, alcohol is well integrated even though it doesn't feel so mature as the age statement.

An intense nose with typical Jamaica funk! On the palate, the rum still seems quite fresh! The alcohol is still clearly noticeable

Calendar #10 / blind Lots of esters on the nose, solvent, plus banana and banana peel and tropical fruit salad, apple and a slight vinegar note. After a while, something malty is added. Oh, it's got a lot of power, 70% for sure. But very sweet at the same time. Ester first, then overripe mango, marzipan, vanilla and a little wood. Mint and cinnamon round off the taste explosion nicely. The finish is also surprisingly sweet, long and warm, with vanilla, solvent and ester at the end. A slight tar note is somehow also present. I like it very much. I would guess a young Hampden DOK, but it could also be a step below that, with some unusual cask.

RumX Advent calendar 10.12.23: It's off to Jamaica. I would actually guess a New Yarmouth right away, vintage 2009. All the notes are there (fruit, esters, cookie dough), mouthfeel and intensity also seem to fit. The vintage is of uniformly high quality, so it's not easy to identify a specific bottling. I'm going to guess RX13284 anyway. Let's see...

RumX Advent Calendar No. 10: What a board. Ester and fruit notes on the nose and in the taste. Overall very long and intense finish. Lots of alcohol but well integrated. For me, this is not a high ester rum, but a good mid-range ester rum.
Review by Michal S
A very good Hampden with a classic flavour profile - tropical fruits, esters, a little solvent and young wood. A nice drink.
