Velier Hampden Jazzin MJH3 (The Whisky Find) 2012

"I set myself up for a Hampden and got completely surprised" — that's the story here. The tropical fruit and esters are there, but a smoky, peaty, almost meaty whisky-cask note muscles in and splits the room. Some love the wild mash-up; several felt it buries the Hampden DNA and tastes like old candy. At 62.6% the alcohol is unusually well integrated.

The community says
  • High-ester Hampden
  • Alcohol well integrated
  • Keep in mind: Peaty whisky note

How does Velier Hampden Jazzin MJH3 (The Whisky Find) 2012 taste?

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Smoky whisky-cask Hampden that splits the room Deeply polarizing — the peaty whisky-cask note either makes it fascinating or, as one taster put it, "breaks its neck." Ester fans expecting classic Hampden should sample first.

Unfortunately, I have a smoky, bacony note in the finish. I suspect an Islay or other strange whisky cask. Otherwise, this is a decent Hampden, which I would have given more points.

Uh, no! These are worlds that don't go together for my palate. On the nose, it still raises expectations with its atypical caramel aromas, reminiscent of Carambar. But in the mouth, unfortunately not a great experience for me (also in the context of the other Jamaicans I tried today). It tastes like old sweets to me. I had my heart set on Hampden, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. I will try it on its own. Edit: stick with it. I don't like it.

Another very strange Hampden. Of course I recognize the beautiful esters and tropical fruits here, but there is also a certain off-note that I don't find suitable. The smokiness reminds me of a whisky again. Definitely won't make it into my circle of favorites. But better than the Esterhunter Catch 2 yesterday. But this whisky note that flashes in my head breaks its neck here

Very strange nose. Has something of Irish whiskey about it. This pushes the HD profile pretty much into the background. Fortunately not too peaty. Unfortunately, the whiskey notes dominate the palate and the peaty, slightly smoky aromas remain present in the finish.

This “Jazzin” release is a prime example of Hampden’s signature style—full‑on esters and tropical fruit explosiveness, tightened together with spice and high‑proof intensity. At 62.6 %, it’s unapologetically bold, ideal for those who relish Jamaican funk at its most vibrant

So, finally the Jazzin in the glass. On the nose, the typical tropical fruits and a little ester. Then a slight iodine aroma joins in, reminiscent of betaisidona ointment. Fortunately, this disappears quickly. Hampden is also recognizable on the palate, even if the aromas are not so intense. There is also a light, bitter and smoky note. But somehow this doesn't bother me at all. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish really suggests a whisky finish. I like it very much, unfortunately there won't be another bottle available.

For me personally, this was right on the edge of undrinkable. Sweet and peaty-smoky notes mask the Hampden. The alcohol wasn't particularly well integrated either. If you like smoky, peaty notes, you should certainly give it a chance. But unfortunately it's not for me

When tasting, I expected a Hampden and was completely surprised. The high ester content contributes to a mouth-filling experience on the tongue. The typical tropical and funky aromas quickly take a back seat to dark fruits, wood, smoke, and something meaty. Sounds totally crazy, and it is, but I like it a lot! The alcohol is very well integrated and the mouthfeel is warm, astringent, and bacon-oily at the same time. Many thanks for the sample @BananaJoe

The nose typical Hampden notes. Already overripe with lots of esters. On the palate quite smoky though. However, it doesn't lose its rum DNA and remains a stable Hampden. Also has a nice finish.
