A sample picked up at the German Rum Festival in 2024. A very soft and full of flavors nose, pastry, bitter wood and like a scent of Madeira. The entry on the palate is a bit weak with a marked alcohol for the 46%. All the aromas of the nose are present but somewhat restrained, a bit in the background. The finish is long, rather fine and elegant, on wood, bitterness and dried fruits. The empty glass is insanely elegant but on the dark side. A very beautiful label and a somewhat disappointing palate.

This is a tasting from 06.08.2011 held at a local Spirits shop in Vejle. My notes about this rum. Very dark rum with strong roasted wood notes. Medium fruity with some chocolate, nuts and caramel.

GRF13: Sample from RhumAuctioneer On the nose this Port Mourant has almost the same aromas as yesterday's 85 Rum Nation. Simply fantastic. On the palate it is however not quite as present and as it goes on the aromas get weaker.. the finish is therefore quite short. Still a great bottling and a piece of liquid history.

Great old Demerara. The 43% is not unpleasant at all, but fits exactly. Roasted aromas, baking aromas. A great rum that positively surprises me.

Little look into some 74 PMs: Moon Import / Kingsbury / Skene Whisky. On the nose: Moon comes with a profile I would immediately associate with PM. Anise, wet would and plum. Very nice and rich. Kingsbury shows more sweetness with almonds and a buttery sensation to it. Also very nice. A bit more lively - despite the significantly longer aging. Skene delivers the heaviest Profil. Leather, black tea and herbs. Yet still some sweetness and dried figs. Most demanding of the three but also highest intensity. On the palate: Moon is very nice with rich notes of coffee and dried plums delivered with some sweetness. Kingsbury shows some sweetness again and rich dark notes with lots of wood and leather without being bitter at any point. Skene is more balanced than the Kingsbury. A bit more sweetness and dried fruits alongside the strong wood influence. All in all I go with Moon = Skene > Kingsbury for today.

Sample taken at GRF from Rhumauction. Tasted in direct comparison with the Kingsbury 1974... Nose: the Moon is more old school PM with plum, espresso, wood & malt, leather and floral lavender & violet notes. The Kingsbury has more tea, marzipan and licorice and less plum. Palate: Kingsbury... thin, tea, tannin, licorice and some dried fruits. Far behind the nose. Moon: more plum than the Kingsbury, but also thin and far behind the nose. Overall both fall short of a nice nose and are somewhat thin. Moon is more plum and floral with coffee, Kingsbury more tea & almond with licorice. The Moon is less diluted and comes through a bit more on the palate. For me the better one.

Classic old Demerara profile. Heavy sweetness, dark fruit aromas, wood bitterness, spices, balanced. Despite dilution not flat, even though other representatives from these years bring even more aromatic power thanks to their higher alcohol content and therefore score even higher. Elegant, drinkable, great rum.

A very impressive rum, the rum is very good on the nose and charming with an incredible balance! You drink it very easily and you don’t spit it out. It’s a legendary bottle from Guyana.

The reduction did not do the rum justice. A really lovely 1974 that really puts most of modern stuff to shame. Lovely bites that only evolve though very long aging. Sweet and a bit sulfur lingers forever
