Near-unanimous love here, with a few tasters calling it their best-ever agricole and only a couple finding the oak overpowering. Strikingly dark for a cane-juice rum, it drinks like leather, cocoa, coffee and tobacco wrapped in dried fruit and dark caramel. Complex, heavy and dry-yet-sweet at once. Several note it needs air to fully open. An unusual agricole that eats bourbon-cask warmth and heavy Demerara comparisons.

Awesome profile, my favorite Agricole so far! Dark and dried fruits with lots of wood, spice, caramel, chocolate and tobacco/black tea. Dark and tart notes are hardly surprising given the color. Nevertheless, balanced and very complex.

Retasting with the RumX guys. -------- This was my favourite of the evening. A lot of lovely oak and oak spices from nose to finish. Dry and kind of sweet at the same time. Wonderful balance between the heavy oak notes, fruits and spices. The sprinkle of chocolate and tobacco makes it a very smooth Agricole.

Wow. From start to finish just an absolute experience. Strongly cooked down / reduced citrus marmalade with kumquat and grapefruit, English breakfast or Ceylon tea, nice tannins from the wood and molasses associations with slightly bitter hints. Incredibly complex and at the same time balanced. Awesome stuff! And please look at this color? 😍 An agricole to kneel before: absolute divine stuff! 💯 for me by far the best Bally so far! Even the 1998 doesn't quite reach it. An absolute alien among the agricoles! 😍👽

First impression: Maggi looks like thin soup compared to this! On the nose, the oak barrel is quite brute at first, then after a while it opens up with toffee, balsamic vinegar, leather, baked apple, dried herbs.... on the palate barrel, black tea, caramel, tobacco, licorice. What a color... it's been a long time since I've seen a rum this dark. But the rum itself is also very exceptional.... An Agricole of the absolute top class! Heavy, dark, strong and yet very balanced and full-bodied. I could smell and sip it for hours. I would love to have a bottle of this

Rich on the nose with lots of depth. The 1999 delivers a significant amount of wood also adding some charred and leathery notes to the fruits on the nose. It delivers a noticably darker profile versus other vintages. On the palate the high ABV works very well providing intensity and depth. While also a bit more on the woody/dark side this is kot as pronounced as on the nose. Very nice.

🎁 Sample obtained thanks to RX points. 🎨 A beautiful dark mahogany with Auburn reflections. Fatty tears that stay long on the glass walls. 👃 Wow! Lots of oak staves, spices on a Caribbean market in full sun, cocoa and coffee roasting. I have this sensation of a caramel that is left to cook for a long time in an old cast iron pot while continuously keeping it liquid by adding younger caramel, like a solera method. It's very dark for a pure cane juice BUT without the astringency usually found in this kind of old agricole. I also find notes of dried fruits, raisin cake, prunes, old Armagnac, black fruits (blackcurrant?), a bit of varnish and licorice freshness. A near perfect nose for an agricole. 😋 The aromas from the nose hold their promises in the mouth. We find a lot of oak on the tannins, but again with a fine and cleverly dosed bitterness. Lots of roasting, cocoa, coffee, spices, Morello cherries in their old brandy, notes of tobacco leaf and dried mint. ⛳ And what a finish! Long, dry, slightly bitter and tannic, bringing structure and complexity, dried fruits and especially this note of caramelized brown sugar that appears throughout the tasting. 🫗 Magnificent freshness of the empty glass on a stick of mentholated licorice. 🏅 What a bomb of agricole rum. A complex, concentrated dram, with tension and remarkable length. One of my best agricoles tasted to date. I haven't mentioned it yet, but the alcohol is beautifully integrated. ⚖️ How I would love to compare this kind of profile with an old Neisson 18 years, a Damoiseau 1980, a J.M leather, a Chantal Comte La Mauny 2001...

It has a very dark and deep color. The nose is heady and enveloping with red fruits, wood/barrel, spices, cocoa and creamy sweetness on the finish, magnificent. The palate is complex, rich, deep, structured with notes of red fruits, black cherry, but also wood/barrel, light peppery spices, sweet and other roasted nuts, really fabulous, in the finish also some tobacco to close a perfect roundness. Abv excellent, I prefer it to 98 for its more exuberant and extrovert personality. In the empty glass wood and seasoned. (Without the final tobacco note it would have been at least a 9.6) (I've tried blending it with Flibuste99 and it becomes something sensational, and if you also add a few drops of Damoiseau1980 it becomes the perfect 10 Rhum)

A rum recommended by a friend. Almost black in the glass.Walnut stain, earth and mushrooms, I think of a smoky autumn cabin on the edge of the forest.The palate seems a little simpler than the nose, but new aromas keep arriving and complement a richness and aromatic depth never before experienced in an agricole.The finish is infinite, on the bitter side. A rum with a very strong personality. I love it!

This rum took some time to open up to its wonderful complex aroma. I forgot to take the time but 30 minutes maybe. Too much time in the glass makes the palate too woody and earthy for my liking. On the nose: I feel like i find something little bit different on each nosing that i take. Leather, woody, toasted with dried fruits like plum and cherry. Spices notes cinnamon and nutmeg. Hints of grassy notes in the background. Taste: Intense, berries/red fruits notes at first and then you get cocoa and light coffee notes. Woody notes and leather notes follow after that and you get little bit peppery notes at the end. This rum was going places. Finish: Woody and leather notes and then you get earthy notes like tobacco. Little bit of peppery notes. Dry and slightly bitter This rum offered really nice range of notes and while it didn't hit me as hard as it seemed to hit other users for some reason, i can recommend this rum.

What a color! Generally, I love old Bally! You can recognize the signature here but I would also say it spent many years in a bourbon barrel. The warm woody side, chocolate and vanilla is very present. Totally different from the 2004 aged in French oak where the spices express themselves more and the wood is different.

Gets better with every sip. It more balanced than 2006, touch finer and more complex with a bit more fruits, smokiness and residual sweetness. Licerice is a bit toned down which works well for me. Thank you JakobM for the sample.

The nose is very nice... but it needs its time in the glass to develop. At first I was disappointed by the nose. Taste very intense and fruity. Pure aroma. However, not a 9 for me today.

Wonderful balanced Agricole. Very flavorful and slightly creamy.. Feels like it grows more in the mouth. The vegetal notes are in the foreground followed by a nice sweetness and the barrel influence.

Color: Umbra - extremely dark. Smell: Quite reserved. Round like Mon Cherie, rum-grape-nut chocolate, dried plum and raisins. Also smells like slightly burnt marble cake and pudding. Taste: Round and fruity, then spicy in the mouth. A flavor explosion when swallowing... super tasty! Tastes like red fruit jelly and raisin drink with cream, also spicy. Finish: Medium length. Pleasant, the above-mentioned aromas fade gently. Dry, spicy, woody and sharp. Slightly bitter with tannins. 87 points.

Very interesting and intense Agricole, but for me already a bit past its zenith. I like the 2006 LMDW better. Nevertheless, of course, a top-class rum with a lot of recognition value.

BALLY 1999-2017 18 years. Brut De Fût 54.5% Put into aging at 62.1% so only a 7.6% loss during the barrel years. Raw material: fresh sugarcane juice. Direct fermentation. New oak barrel. Incredible complexity and density. An agricole rum that blindfolded you would peg as heavy Demerara. An absolute fruitiness, candied, a concentrated noble wood, tannins and spices in abundance, infinite finish and a diabolical balance. The most beautiful of Bally.

J. Bally 1999 – Brut de Fût – 54.5% After the very first historic brut de fût from Bally – the famous 1998 vintage, here is its successor: the 1999, released in 2017 (yes, time flies!). True to the same approach, this rum was aged at 62.1% and underwent neither reduction nor topping up. After 17 years of rest, it has hardly lost any of its initial power. This cuvée was bottled in a very limited edition of 948 copies, in the iconic pyramid bottles, for La Maison du Whisky. According to Bally, the particularly dry 1999 year gave this vintage a unique profile, quite distinct in the range. Tasting 🔍 Appearance: A strikingly dark, almost opaque robe – a shade that evokes Coca-Cola, but in its noble version. 👃 Nose: Deep, intense, extremely gourmand. An explosion of caramel, clove, cocoa, precious wood, leather, and warm spices. The complexity is such that with each return, a new aroma reveals itself. A captivating, almost hypnotic nose. 👄 Palate: Simply magnificent. The power of the brut de fût transports us immediately. The attack is broad, dominated by spices and well-melted wood. We find all the richness announced on the nose: roasted notes, cane freshness, and even a subtle, well-integrated solvent touch. 🔚 Finish: Very long, ample, with a beautiful roundness and a delicate spicy persistence. A finish worthy of the rest of the tasting. Conclusion A unique, rare rum of incredible depth, to be savored with rum lovers or dear close ones. Many thanks to Mika for this superb moment of sharing!

Very tasty, woody. Uncompromisingly unique. Doesn't flatter you, but doesn't overwhelm either. Long finish that gets stronger! Not too smoky. Very pleasant.

Super-complex agricole rhum. The taste is a hybrid of Guyana, ancient Guadeloupe and Martinique rhum. In the top 5 agricoles in my opinion.
