Very round, delicious rum from Guyana - Uitvlugt. Very pleasant to drink, i would say a rum for every day. Alcohol is integrated very well. Also the wood isn‘t dominant here, but well noted in the finish. Price per value is very good too. Nose and palate coherent: fruit, herbs, wood but rather young. Many aromas mixing, quite complete. Long finish. It's a very good rum. It's rather the aromas that don't suit my tastes.

Vertical PM tasting: 89 / 95 /97 / 97 (cognac finish) / 02 / 05 / 13: Nose: Classic PM notes with some additional depth vs. the younger bottlings. Palate: nice complexity paying tribute to its age. Delivers what you would hope for in a continental PM with a nice touch of dried fruits.

Edit: I like it better and better every time I try it Guyana, a completely different taste in the rum world for me. As I've never dealt intensively with this category before, it's difficult to describe my first impressions. Very interesting in any case. Definitely makes you want more. I think I'll have to taste it again, definitely.

#5014 31.12.2024 Enjoying a set of samples while cooking New Year Dinner. Nose Medium intense, wood, spice, light herbs, light roasted, light grass, dried fruit, light plum. Palate Oily, round, balanced, wood, light tannins, faint smoke, light honey, spice, light herbs, light grass, faint chocolate, dried fruit. Finish Long and warm, wood, light roasted, dried fruit, spice, light grass, light tannins, light herbs. The empty glass has light mint, tea, raisin and light chocolate.

Quite light in color I had to check the age at first. Recently a 3yo was much darker than this, typical 12yo Foursquares (referenced due to no coloring rule) are darker as well, so I really doubt this rum had 23 years of age in the tropics. On the other hand I find the alcohol very good integrated, light even despite the ABV. Taste and smell wise I would not have said Port Mourant, the herbs are there of course, but I found everything quite light. The greatest complaint would be the very short aftertaste. It is very enjoyable, though, and I drank the second half of the sample as well, despite my "half sample a day for comparison" rule.

They exist, the inspiring continental aged Uitvlugts from the 90s. This bottling confirms that exemplary for the 1997 vintage; no style break to various other releases of the same vintage, the typical green, fruity and spicy notes play here but in the big orchestra and dare to go to extremes without overflowing. To stay in the musical context, the difference to other releases of comparable vintages and Marques could probably be described with a performance of the local brass band and that of the preferred philharmonic orchestra - the melody may remain recognizable, but the sophistication of the performance is at home in different leagues. Very successful!

A very typical Port Mourant rum. Spices and white-fleshed fruits (pear/apple) very nice on the nose. Complex and good. Very dry on the palate, you would think it's salty. I have better memories of the 97 from l'esprit, more fruity and less salty, less marked by the cask.

Lots of green tea in this one. Dry. Cranberry. Green apple/fruits. Very spirit driven, hardly any wood influence. The complexity hides within its dry tones. Its a pleasant drop but also a bit a-typical for a P.M. because of that dryness.

After a longer break, once again a beautiful, old Uitvlugt in the glass… Nose: fine, fresh aromas, orange and lemon with sweet-sour gooseberry, red currant and passion fruit. Behind that a malty sweetness of honey or candied fruits combined with spicy nutmeg and a bit of anise. Sandalwood, resin and pencil lead also play along. Pleasant and beautiful impression. 8.6. Palate: strong and intense. Quite salty and slightly bitter at the start. Dry, almost a bit metallic. Lemon peel and lime. Feels slightly burnt in the middle and bitter-nutty-woody, but then gets some fruit again with red currant. At the end the salty impression from the start returns. Nice flavor curve. This one is good. 8.4.

Very herbal and spicy, especially on the nose. Very multi-layered and complex, but comparatively short on the finish. Somewhat surprising for the age and considering the complexity also a bit of a pity. Still a really great rum!

Retating today. Still find it delicious, but to be fair to other rums I tried in the meantime, Im moving it down a point, beautiful nose, could be more complex on the mouth. I find it delicious and interesting. On the nose unusual tropical fruits, green apple, some mirabelles and fresh wood. herbs and olives appear in taste, finish mostly feel green tea, medium length.

On the nose buttery-sour, lemony and fresh, a bit of yeast! On the palate the rum spreads oily throughout the entire space! Young, wood, lightly toasted concentrated, somewhat bitter towards the end! The young wood remains in the aftertaste.. very successful rum!

Although really pale in color, it is not a boring rum! The nose is very flavorful, with dark fruits upfront (plums and dates), wet wood and lots of mildly sweet spices (anice and nutmeg). I the background I can sense a grassy note (I agree with the community, which senses a tea flavor). The palate is very warm and spicy, the tea is still there, although I apparently lost the dark fruits, which are covered by the alcohol burn. The finish is kinda odd, with wood and lychees with a dry bitterness from the tea.

On the nose, intense herbs and especially tea. Almost no fruit but other floral notes. In the mouth, it continues the same way: spicy, tea, and herbs. The finish is medium length with woody but dominant herbal notes. A great rum with a special profile if you like tea & herbs. Unfortunately a bit monotonous for me.

Wow, this really surprised me! A great wood-fruit combination with a slight funk, wonderfully integrated alcohol and complex, soft aromas. Got it with some samples - thanks Zabo for the continuously fantastic service! - and for the RRP of 120€ (?) I would definitely have put 2 bottles on the shelf. Really fun! Wood, fruit, slightly grassy fresh agricole notes, minty,... there's a lot going on, you can spend a long time enjoying it.

Very complex, in the aroma tropical fruits and spices, on the palate rather vegetal. With water it becomes sweeter and flatter. Considering the age, a comparatively short finish.

Again a very pale PM for the age. However, the nose impresses with an intense smell of herbs, vegetables, dried fruits, olive brine and nutmeg. I find other Uitvlugts more accessible/pleasant. Even on the nose, the age of 23 years is not particularly noticeable; even for continental aging, I would expect significantly more wood/cask influence. Over time, vegetable-like aromas increase significantly. There is also damp hay. On the palate, I would have liked significantly more fruit or at least a little sweetness. My previous reference is the 24-year-old Duchess. I remember it as significantly more balanced/pleasant. This Uitvlugt is quite different. Not bad, but somehow not very convincing either. I usually rate 2-3 points below average because I always want to leave some room for improvement and have never tried many highly praised rums and maybe never will. Here, I personally find 86 way too high. Maybe just not my preferred profile, but I find this rum does not meet my expectations.

Personally, way too woody and spicy overall for me, hardly any fruit and a bit of herbs. The alcohol could be better integrated, mainly woody, salty and bitter astringent. Nutmeg and juniper are the most dominant, the finish is very short. Not my thing...
