Velier Saint James Brut de fût 2001
Sip this one neat and give it a few minutes in the glass. It's a woody, spicy old agricole with cherry and dried plum, tobacco, leather and licorice, plus red fruit that's unusual for the style. Several tasters loved the fruit and integration; a few found the oak a touch astringent and the finish a bit short. The 50.3% keeps everything lively.

How does Velier Saint James Brut de fût 2001 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Woody, red-fruited aged agricole sipper Most people rate this a very good aged Martinique agricole — intense, woody, full of red fruit and tobacco. The recurring gripe is oak bitterness and, for some, a finish that fades fast.

Oh, it's so good! Very nice balance of yellow fruit and barrel influence! But not too round, very complex, the barrel influence dominates somewhat.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
A really intense saint james that retains its characteristic notes of red fruits, coffee, dark chocolate and tobacco! Throughout the tasting you are accompanied by a nice citrus note of lime and the cask is well integrated!
Review by Joachim Guger
Full, round Agricole with pronounced wood maturity and - uncharacteristically for an Agricole - red fruits like cherry.Very well integrated alcohol. Overall very good.

Great Agricole. Nice barrel influence. On the palate red fruit and nice spice.

Lovely release and I especially like the flavours in the empty glass where the chocolate and spice stand out. Nice and intense nose and palate.

Nice high ABV. That drives the aromas. The nose is strong and intense. Woody-spicy-fruity. The wood has a fine wood acidity upfront. Also clearly vinegar and pipe tobacco. Still, I can detect a very slight caramel sweetness. The fruit is more cherry and dried plum. Spices include caraway and baking spices. Palate: also nicely intense. Pleasantly woody with some leather and tobacco. Cherry, dried plum and grape come through again. It has something of red wine because of that. Oh yes, old oak takes over. Also nicely spicy with licorice, allspice and slight menthol. Finish woody and fruity, increasingly grassy. Higher % do an Agricole good. More of that, even though I haven't found 'my' Agricole yet.

I am continuing my little St. James flight, and find this one a bit better than the 14yo variant I tried earlier. It is less herbal, but has more fruit (especially with some drops of water).

Good Saint James. I really preferred the nose, very woody but also very greedy. In the mouth it's good, sweet because the alcohol is super well integrated. Marked by the wood, maybe a bit too much. Otherwise what is a pity is the lack of length. It passes right away...

I like it a lot, but doesn't quite come close to the phenomenal Corman Collins 2002 bottling.

Really cool Saint James brut de fut! Surprisingly little wood and lots of freshness and fruit!
Review by Émile Shevek
On the nose it is very captivating, fragrant and intense with plums (red fruits), wood, dried fruits, leather, burnt sugar, vanilla, a hint of tobacco and some spices. Very good! On the palate it is initially spicy, then red fruits come through and finally a background sweetness, all enriched by violet, frangipane, vegetal notes, toasted wood and fine tobacco, but the spicy aspect is dominant. It leaves a very good aftertaste, woody, earthy and dry. Thanks to Dr.Django for the sample.

Basically a very good agricole. Very tasty on the nose, but bitterness bothers on the palate and finish, hence a point deduction. I will approach the rum again in a solo tasting. The current impression might also be distorted by the other rums tasted today.
Review by Rene Pfeiffer
Clearly more matured Agricole. Woody, bitter, tobacco, but also clearly dark, dried fruits. Milder on the nose than on the palate. In the finish, still distinct bitter notes and spices. Not quite round, but definitely interesting.

My RumRatings review from 5 years ago: Saint James is strong and dark on the nose. Lots of barrel influence and dark fruits are underlined by grassy Agricole notes. Toffee and baking spices combine with vanilla and a hint of citrus and mint. Great. On the palate, the rum is complex with a full body. The alcohol is very well integrated. Lots of wood, a bit of tobacco and dark fruit underline light Agricole notes that become more present in the finish. The finish is woody with some bittersweet chocolate and lasts long. An absolutely high-quality Agricole showing lots of complexity and beautiful dark dense aromas. Absolutely delicious and a great example of perfectly aged Agricole rums.

A pity for the low strength but it comes with persistence, aroma and typicality of St James
Review by Ondra RumRunner
Saint James Velier Brut de Fût 2001 is a limited edition agricole rum from Martinique, distilled in 2001 and bottled unfiltered and without added sugar. It is a true "brut de fût" rum, meaning it is cask strength, preserving its full intensity and complexity. The nose is strongly woody, with prominent glue-like notes, a characteristic of long-aged agricole rums. There are also subtle hints of spice and minerality, adding further depth. On the palate, it is intense and robust, with dominant sweet notes balanced by woody and spicy elements. The sweetness is not overwhelming but naturally complements the rum’s structure. Oak tones gradually develop, leaving a long, dry, and complex finish.

Agri edition of the RFC 2025 advent calendar.

When I first smelled it, it was very woody, with a hint of something like leather or oriental wood, spices...very intense taste at first taste...a bit like medicine - cough drops. For being 18 years old and 50% I was expecting a smoother expression, but now I realize it's agricole...aha. After aging for a while in the glass, the expression softens a bit and the fullness and woodiness comes out...

Vintage 2001. With 8.5 out of 10, it belongs to the better ones that have come into my glass.
